5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to understand fire behavior, this is the book!, October 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Kirk's Fire Investigation (4th Edition) (Hardcover)
I first came in contact with this book while attending theIllinois Fire Service Institute fire investigation modules. I haveread many other books concerning fire behavior and fire investigation, but I feel that this book is the most comprehensive over all. It not only gives you the basics in fire investigation but also the hard scientific knowledge to understand what happens when fires occur. I have used this book for several years as an investigator and find myself returning to it time and time again. This book is also a must for preparing cases for court. The author is a reknowned leader in the field of forensic fire investigation and is widely respected for his approach in regards to this subject. If you have any questions you can contact me at my e-mail address. Thank you, Jeffrey A. Miller CFI/CAI Mt.Vernon Fire Department

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for anyone seeking to understand fire behavior!, January 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Kirk's Fire Investigation (4th Edition) (Hardcover)
Written in an understandable, practical manner, this book makes a difficult subject comprehensible by even the unscientifically minded.
The author writes clearly and the book is very readable. The text is accompanied by great photographs & illustrations.
What a relief to find this book after attempting to plow through some of the other texts on this subject. Highly recommended!

The chief god of fire investigation has spoken. DeHaan wrote a complete and through text about fire investigation. If you are serious about fire investigation, this is a must book in your library. It is a tough book in read. So, buy it and review it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire Investigator, February 18, 2006
If you are a fire cause and origin investigator, you need this book! If you don't use it, you can bet an attorney will use it against you in civil or criminal proceedings. This book should be right next to your NFPA 921. DeHahn writes in a pragmatic and easy to understand format. I understand that the 6th ed. is getting ready for relase so you might wait a couple of weeks and get the latest. Bravo Dr. DeHaan, you've done it again!

Many myths and tales still exist about the principle of fire behavior and burn pattern analysis, but John Dehann quickly puts those to rest every time a new edition of this book is published. This edition is no exception. For those who aspire to become an arsonist for fun or profit and feel by reading this book you'll get some helpful hints - beware, this book will not help you it will hinder you, and help those of us who hunt you in trapping you at your own game. A must have as a resource manual that augments NFPA 921 for the fire investigator whether public or private.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST FOR FIRE SCIENCE, September 29, 2004

The best book I know about fire; I like it for the strict scientific and pragmatic approach and the lot of practical hints, useful for a fire operator but also for a fire student.
Reading it, I understood a lot of things I watched in my 20 years of firefighting, and it changed my perception of fire behaviour and my understanding of a post-fire scene analysis.
A great help, and this edition is a lot better than the previous I had, the 3°.

I bought this book as a step in investigating fires and arson steps of investigation in writing a novel. It does have a lot of good information, but it's very generalized--not specific. Good for the amateur fire sleuth that wants to get enought information to be able to 'talk the language.'
