From the Inside Flap

"Kiss of Deceit weaves together a fine tapestry of romance and history. With intense emotion and passion the characters come alive on the page and engage you from the opening chapters. Author Jerri Hines has cleverly crafted her story around the war torn south with such rich detail it makes you feel as though you are right there in the midst of the American Revolution."

5.0 out of 5 stars Kept me Intrigued August 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'll admit it, I like history so I have a tendency to read Regency romance. But, I was so intrigued with a romance set during the American Revolution that I couldn't wait to try it. After reading Ruse of Love, I can't wait to go back and read Patriot Secrets.
I loved the backdrop of the Revolution and how the author took us from the battlefields to the high society of the South. The story and mystery kept me guessing the whole time. Who was good? Who was bad? The characters were well developed and I felt for them during this chaotic time in history. The story wrapped up nicely and, since I don't want to spoil it, let's just say it was great!
If you like Kathleen Woodiwiss or are interested in the Revolution period, you will love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars American Revolution Gem August 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ruse of Love really brings to life how difficult, dangerous, and gritty the American Revolution was. Set against that backdrop is a secret plot involving Rebekah. As a naive young girl of fifteen, she has a crush on Dr. Jonathan Corbett. Sadly, he has married another. When Rebekah's parents die, she's thrust into a difficult situation for the sake of her younger siblings. She tries to make the best of it in 'Charles Town,' with the help of her friends, but some mysterious person is intent on causing her harm. When she's kidnapped, she falls into the power of an attractive and deadly rogue, Black Rory. She loses her innocence, but not her goodness. How Rebekah ultimately finds love and happiness is an engaging journey.

I really enjoyed Ruse of Love. Hines creates very sympathetic characters in Rebekah, Jonathan, and even Black Rory. I wasn't sure who I was rooting for to win Rebakah's heart... Black Rory or Jonathan! I'd recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the American Revolution, the deep South, or romance literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read! September 18, 2012

Captivating and intriguing! It was a great return to Rebekah's story. The romance is my favorite part, but I really enjoyed the historical content too! This book captures the heart of a woman who is capable and strong, but also has that desire & vulnerability that we all have when in love. A must read follow-up to Patriots Secrets!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Kept my attention April 1, 2013
By Kydonna
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have now finished this third book in the "Winds of Betrayal" series. I enjoyed all three books and look forward to the fourth due out next year. I must again say that it was a shame that such a good plot of history and romance was tainted by all the typos and words just not being in the right place, etc. If this series had not been full of those errors, I would have rated all three books 5 stars. I am hope that by the time the 4th book comes out, this problem will be solved.

Plots and more plots about in this wonderfully complex, exciting and fast-paced tale of love, revenge and honor set in the Carolinas during the American Revolutionary War.

The American Revolution we learned about from dry history books comes alive with real people suffering the hardships of war. The plight of naïve, downtrodden Rebekah, suffering for crimes she didn't commit, is heartbreaking. Jonathan, surgeon in the Continental Army, is honorable, loyal and a hero to die for. Not all snakes slither in the grass, and Ms. Hines has created several genuinely evil, but true to life and the period, villains.

The best part of the story is Jonathan. A truly heroic man, but also human in his quest to avenge and protect those, especially his family, whom the tides of war have harmed. His fiery patriotism dims but never falters as he continues his support of the American cause while he ministers to the sick as well as navigates the politics (there are always politics) of the different factions fighting the British.

Ms. Hines's heroes are heroic, her villains villainous, and the backdrop of the war makes everything play out with an intensity not possible in peacetime. A big story, and although we know who won, we wonder how the characters will fare even as we reach "The End".

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing and unromantic. February 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My three biggest complaints about this book:
1. Sentence structure was awkward and words were not used properly or in the correct tense.
2. There were too many characters involved. It was difficult to remember all of the names and how people were related to each other; most of the characters were superfluous anyway.
3. The plot was too complicated. Complexities didn't add to the story, just made it more difficult to read.
Now that being said I can forgive a book all these atrocities if it's got great romance. (Because shoot, don't a hot kiss fix all?) Unfortunately this book was tap water warm at best.
Would not recommend.
