Would Have Been Better As Instrumentals,

I own most of Brave Combo's albums and this may be my least favorite. The band turns in a credible performance, but Lauren Agnelli's vocals are just not a good match for the music. Believe it or not, I'd recommend Girl, with Tiny Tim on vocals, over this one.

Brave Combo "Kiss of Fire",

Lush and quirky...imagine a torch singer with a polka band, which is the only way to describe this. Brave Combo is a great band.

Brave Combo has rarely invited vocalists to record a whole album. I think Lauren Agnelli is great!
Y'all really should listen to 'Girl' (with Tiny Tim).

One of the best from Brave Combo,

The first Brave Combo CD I bought was "Night on Earth." The picture on the cover of that CD says it all about this band. Their music has always reminded me of the phenomenon of local "Vegas" bands--bands that perform at local buffets and feature a couple of multi-instrumentalists with electronic percussion and play all sorts of classics in just about every style for just about any generation. Brave Combo just happens to be the best at doing this.
All this to say that "Kiss of Fire" captures Brave Combo's particular aesthetic better than most of their albums before or since. I would have to say, too, that the vocals by Lauren Agnelli seem to be the exact female counterpart to the band's usual vocals. Highly recommended for fans of Brave Combo and for all-around accordion freaks like me. For more great (and quirky) accordion music, check out "Squeeze This!" and "No Strings Attached" (including their version of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?") by the San Francisco Bay Area band Those Darn Accordions. |
