Book Description

Logan Quinn was trying to kill me.My Spartan classmate relentlessly pursued me, swinging his sword at me over and over again, the shining silver blade inching closer to my throat every time. A smile tugged up his lips, and his ice-blue eyes practially glowed with the thrill of battle…

I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart—the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword—with Logan’s help—I just might die by the sword…

Praise for Touch of Frost

“An intriguing start to an exciting new series!”

5.0 out of 5 stars #2 even better than #1 :) January 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
Kiss of Frost, the second novel in The Mythos Academy series, once again showcases Gwen Frost. In the first novel Gwen learns that her Gypsy abilities are about more than just touching and seeing. She comes to find out that her abilities will be soon put to the test to keep the evil god Loki in the underworld prison.

In Kiss, Gwen is learning how to fight reapers in order to protect not only herself, but the world in general, as she is the Nike Champion. In the beginning, she's not so hot with a sword, archery, or any other type of weapon, dropping them more often them hitting someone. However, she and her best friend Daphne, realize she may be able to hone in on the skills by using her gypsy gift (this reminded me of the TV series CHUCK, where he is able to see what he needs to do by `flashing') and soon Gwen is placing arrows smack dab in the middle of the target, compliments of Daphne's skills.

When the students head up to the mountain for winter carnival, Gwen is trying to do her best to keep Logan off of her mind (see book 1), and falls for another student from the New York academy. We realize during this novel that this student isn't cracked up to be who he portrays himself as. Gwen is able to hone in on Logan's weapons skills and defeats the student in a battle of weapons.

This series is an excellent YA series that I have been enjoying and look forward to the next novel! I recently read that it has been expanded to six novels, which I feel will be the perfect number of novels to set up, expand and close this story line. I anxiously await to see what happens to Gwen in the next novel. Will she and Logan part ways again, or will Logan put away his bad boy routine and settle down with Gwen? What will happen she he learns that Gwen knows his secret? Is Daphne as pure as we are lead to believe? What about Collin, the band geek? So many questions, so long to wait!

2.0 out of 5 stars Like reading the debut all over again . . . February 16, 2012
By Shera
Format:Paperback
For debut titles there is a certain amount of leniency that you will allow a writer. You can overlook things that would normally bug you because this is the debut title introducing a whole new world. Well, Estep used that get out of jail card on her debut YA book, Touch of Frost, which I enjoyed despite it's over obvious plot. This time around Estep makes all the same mistakes, but I can't overlook them this time.

The plot "twists" and climaxes were so obvious that I almost wanted to put the book down. I knew everything that was going on before the author even introduced the new characters. After a while I kept thinking, surely an author of Estep's caliber could not write something this predictable? Right? Before even a little hint could be put out there I knew where this story line was going. Yes I'm over emphasizing it, but who wants to read a book that you can predict from the first page.

I'd like to say that this time the great cast of characters saved the book and that I enjoyed them fully. However, I really can't. Gwen is annoying in her "I'm just a gypsy and need to prove myself" mind set and her obvious stupidity. The whole time she was lusting after Logan while he's trying to get over her, was boring. Jealousy as a plot devise for developing a love story has never been something I've been interested in. It only ever seems to make the characters look ridiculous and pull out traits that make them seem unredeemable. Besides that, Logan shacking up with another girl while he's obviously in love with Gwen did not earn him any points--unless you like your men slutty.

Sure I'm greatly disappointed with this second title in Estep's new YA series, but I did enjoy it. After all she is the creator of the Elemental Assassins series, it's clear this author has mad skills. It's just that I was expecting her to tap into into those--many times mentioned--skills and produce something other than comfort food for the paranormal genre. There's progress in Kiss of Frost that is clearly going to lead up to an amazing plot, kick ass battles, and a yummy love story. Just at this point it's nothing that you couldn't have thought up yourself.

Sexual Content: Kissing, talk about sex and hooking up, and some sexual humor. Pretty clean all and all. Nothing that will shock the kiddies.

2/5- Average/disappointing, library check-out

4 1/2 stars. Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep continues her young adult series "Mythos Academy" as it follows the adventures of Gwen Frost, gypsy teenager with the gift of psychometry (the ability to gain information about an object's history through the sense of touch). A series of attempts upon her life leads Gwen to think that a Reaper is out to kill her and she assumes that it has something to do with Jasmine's family trying to extract vengeance. Gwen's training is still in the preliminary phase as she doesn't seem to be very adept despite the special training she is receiving from Logan, Oliver and Kenzie. She has learned to channel her best friend Daphne's ability at archery and therefore has improved greatly at hitting her target but fears that she will not be able to adequately defend herself despite Nike having claimed her as the goddess' champion. An unusual encounter with the typically vicious Fenri Wolf as well as several attempts on her life cause Gwen to feel that she has a Reaper after her, possibly due to the death that she caused earlier. Her unrequited attraction to Logan makes her vulnerable to the flirtation of a new guy that she meets during the Winter Carnival but she still questions her relationship with Logan, especially because he seems to give her mixed signals. The question is whether she can remain alive long enough to sort through the complications in her life.

Another excellent addition to the series. Estep combines the typical angst of teen life with its complicated dance of attraction, discomfort with the need to fit in to the popular cliques and overall cattiness between students with the paranormal elements of interacting with gods, superhuman agility and strength, and various unusual talents in an entertaining and intriguing tale. Gradually more is revealed about Gwen's background and more depth is added to the secondary characters around her. Looking forward to the next in the series.
