If Your'e Reading This You're on the Verge of Hearing a Great Singer,
By Steve b (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kiss of Ghosts (Audio CD)
I think Carolyn Currie is one of the best "unknown" singers around. You almost certainly won't find her music in the "big box" or chain music stores. Though I'm not particulary qualified to be a music critic, I have been a big fan of folk, ballad and Celtic music for decades. Ms Currie's voice is uniquely beautiful-- rich and sensual, yet also a perfect match for the sad/haunting songs that predominate her work (and I can also strongly recommend her earlier CDs: "No Heroes" and "Standing Stones"). She writes her own music and the lyrics are particularly poetic and often very moving. Aside from the the great "3 Lady J's" of folk music (i.e. Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Joanie Mitchell), Carolyn Currie is my favorite female singer.

Solid & Alluring,
By Jay Wright (South Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kiss of Ghosts (Audio CD)
Above the crowd noise of a Fall Arts Festival in Camden Harbor, ME there was a beautiful, alluring, angelic female voice in the air. Following it led to this artist, playing her guitar & singing to a captivated crowd. The song was "Everything", which is on this cd. I'm a songwriter/guitarist too, and I stopped dead in my tracks at this unique voice and haunting lyrics. It is so rare to encounter an artist who can impress a crowd so suddenly and so completely.
I was drawn to the voice, but soon I was caught up in the technical aspects of the lyrics, the structure, the melody, the arrangement, etc. I was hearing that rare artist who brings more to a performance than just excellence in voice, playing, & song - Carolyn Currie brings her soul, her sweetness, herself. Her music seemed familiar, yet I'd never heard it before. Her voice seemed familiar, yet it had a magical quality I'd not heard before. Neither the themes nor words were new, yet she has woven them into a tapestry that feelt as comfortable as an old jacket. Her stories evoked thoughts & feelings that were all too familiar - as though she had reached way down inside humanity & gently nudged its more private dreams, emotions, desires. The crowd was not just entertained, it was mesmerized, touched. I left with stunning images of Camden Harbor and also with a handful of cd's by an artist's artist, including this cd. My songwriter's guild are now studying her songs because of her style and the depth and imagry of her lyrics. Very fitting that she's in Maine, known for its beautiful coast & amazing lighthouses. Her work cuts through the rocky seas of this world's music & shines like something quite solid, very unique, and beautifully familiar.

Inner tranquility,

This CD is excellent for those who want music that speaks to the soul. It's almost haunting and is wonderful for centering. I highly recommend it.
