5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable Series Debut
Mr. Abbott gives his hero a nice twist - he's a Texas Justice of the Peace who has no formal training, who got the job through his father's influence, and formerly had a number of unskilled jobs. (My mental image was initially of Jimmy Buffett in judge's robes.) But it turns out that Whit Mosely is an honorable and compassionate man, and may just be the perfect choice...

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite different from the previous series
I am thrilled to see that Mr. Abbott has picked up the pen again after so many years. I purchased his first book on impulse at a grocery store in Austin, TX. Since then, he has been one of my favorite authors. Over the past several years I kept checking to see if he has written a new book.

A Kiss Gone Bad was nothing like I expected. Language, Serial Killers, gore,...

Mr. Abbott gives his hero a nice twist - he's a Texas Justice of the Peace who has no formal training, who got the job through his father's influence, and formerly had a number of unskilled jobs. (My mental image was initially of Jimmy Buffett in judge's robes.) But it turns out that Whit Mosely is an honorable and compassionate man, and may just be the perfect choice for his job.

He's close to the end of a reelection campaign when an old acquaintance, Pete Hubble, is found murdered. Unfortunately, it turns out that Pete is the estranged son of a Senator (who is also up for reelection) and he also just happens to be a well-known porn star (under an assumed name). To complicate matters further, Whit is the lover of Pete's ex-wife, who is in charge of the Senator's election campaign. Unbeknownst to the local law officials, they also have a serial killer in their midst. Also thrown into this mix is Claudia Salazar, a very recently divorced dectective, who is forced to work on a missing persons case with her ex-husband; a runaway barely-legal female who knows more than she's telling; Pete's porn movie producer/lover who's looking for justice; and Whit's own extended family consisting of his five brothers (the notorious Mosley boys), his alcoholic father and the father's fourth wife who is 25 years old and to whom Whit feels a distinct non-filial attraction.

There's a multitude of plot twists and turns, family secrets revealed, betrayals and the like. It was a nice little rollercoaster ride, and I'm looking forward to more books in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Close To Home, April 13, 2004
This review is from: A Kiss Gone Bad (Paperback)
I got this book when Jeff Abbott came to Rockport, TX and did a book signing. So, my book is a signed edition. This book takes place in a fictional town between Rockport and Aransas Pass, TX called Port Leo. Living in this area, myself, made the book come to life in way that was beyond other books. Jeff Abbott, who vacationed in this area while growing up knows South Texas and does justice to the region. His ability to spin the tale while providing all the background details just right had me believing that this was all happening right in my town and I was in the middle of it all.

I love whodunit books and this is now one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting, rocketting murder mystery, October 20, 2001
This review is from: A Kiss Gone Bad (Paperback)
When a death rocks the Texas coast town of Port Leon, beach-bum-turned-Judge Whit Mosley, is summoned to the yacht where he finds the supposed suicide of a Texas legislator his brains spilled all over the bunkbed of the fancy ship. Very little investigation establishes the fact that the guy was heavy into porn videos, not only making them but starring in them. Whit defies local pressure and conducts an inquest, and in the process, drug lords, con artists and power-hungry sharks turn up, all with a blood-lust. This story goes to a new level for its author, the award winning Jeff Abbott who has already established an audience with his stories about Jordan Poteet. This is sure to garner an Edgar nomination. You'll love the wry humor of this wonderfully talented author. Excellent plot, unforgettable characters that are probably still running loose on the Texas beach, and writing with a power that stirs all the basic emotions.

A Kiss Gone Bad was nothing like I expected. Language, Serial Killers, gore, etc. kept me from finishing the book. He took the path of Patterson, Sandford, and King. I'm sure that there is a large audience for A Kiss Gone Bad, and I hope that he finds it. Call me sentimental and bring back Jordan Poteet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good...but Jordan Poteet is better!, April 9, 2002

Nothing Jeff Abbott writes is poor reading, and this is an excellent book. But his Mirabeau, Texas-centered books with Jordan Poteet are much more enjoyable reading...you actually grow to care about the characters. Wish he'd bring 'em back!

A hero and main characters that are three dimensional and realistic, make this an enjoyable read. Good atmosphere and nasty villians keep it moving. Bring on the next one.

I just finished this book- the second I have read in the Whit Mosely series. The second I have read, but actually the first in the series- I suggest you read them in order, I wish I would have! Whit Mosely is a beach bum who happened to fall into the postion of Justice of the Peace and is surprisingly good with some unorthodox methods.

The book starts out when Whit is called to the scene of a dead body. A dead body whom happens to be an old friend of Whit's and the senator's son; Pete Hubble. The scene looks as if Pete committed suicide, but Whit is determined to find the truth.

Finding the truth is much harder than he would anticipate, especially since he is up for reelection and running against a formidable opponent. Whit is being pressured to declare the death a suicide by not only the chief of police, the Senator herself, and some unsavory mob characters. And to make matters worse, teenage girls have been disappearing from the area and someone named the "blade" is responsible.

There is a lot going on in this book and there are some fairly adult themes. If you are looking for a suspenseful easy read- this is the book for you. I give it 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to seeing what Whit Mosely is up to now. Luckily I don't have to wait- there is one more book in the series and a whole new series about a young man named Jordan Poteet. He also has 3 stand alones- I recommend Panic. Don't start it unless you have a free day- I never put it down.
