2.0 out of 5 stars I Sure Didn't Read It For The Ingenious Writing., January 28, 2010
This review is from: Kiss & Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
I don't know what made me pick up this book in the first place--no, I lie. It was reading the phrase "sinfully hot-in a college professor sort of way" that hooked me. I have weaknesses, I am human; professors and other smart guys are my junk food of choice. I digress.

Anyway, the whole time I was reading this book, I was gritting my teeth and resisting the urge to throw it across the store. I went home without buying it, and... and I checked it out at the library. No... that's not completely true. I requested that my library purchase it, and a few days later I picked it up. Every few chapters I had to throw it down in disgust and take a walk, but I always came back. Why? Because of that hot piece of ass that was the main love-interest. I'll give Dakota Cassidy this much: she knows how to write up one Hell of a man. Oh God, did I ever love Clyde Atwell, and it sucks that the real world is not populated with men like him.

ANYWAY, enough about that. The narration was crap. She used to many cutesy slang words and phrases in a very hamfisted attempt to be hip and edgy. If I never see the phrase "ba-donkadonk" in a book again, it will be too soon. The token gal-pal was a little too cliche for my tastes, and the main character's relationship with her wonderful, tough-but-sensitive brother was just yea shy of incestuous. I'm sure Miss Cassidy didn't intend it to be that way, but... well, she should have been much more careful.

In short: I came for the Clyde Atwell and stayed for the Clyde Atwell. There was nothing else to redeem this pile of wood-pulp that they call a book, and I was deeply ashamed the whole time I was reading it. That I am now admitting to having read it is a huge step for me.

I give it two stars, and by that I mean that I give Clyde Atwell five stars, but three of them must be revoked because of all the other crap in the book. I recommend this to no one, except maybe as a step up out of the cesspit that is Twilight--by all means, read this if you're trying to work your way up into some better books, but please move on to better things when you're done!

1.0 out of 5 stars Really didn't like this, July 24, 2009

I have enjoyed a few of the author's other books - Accidentally Dead, The Accidental Werewolf. I didn't like The Accidental Human as much - it seemed a stretch even for a paranormal fantasy, but this book really was very hard to get through. It never grabbed me, and I never ended up caring for any of the characters all that much. I'm sad I didn't hold out til I saw this in a bookstore so I could have read the first chapter and found it wasn't for me.

Why?

The narrative is a rambling first-person stream-of-consciousness. The main character is bizarrely scatter-brained from page one. There's too much cutesy slang, and she's constantly talking to the audience. She has 6 dogs, and every one of them is named "Dog", because she's too stupid or lazy to think of real names. But she, apparently, thinks this is just her own special genius.

If she accomplishes anything, it will be DESPITE her very worst efforts.

It's too exhausting to keep reading and find out.

Delaney Markham sees and talks to dead people. She's channeled this gift into crossing over spirits and holding séances to barely eke out a living. One night while trying to reunite a couple with their deceased loved one, a man comes into Delaney's life having the audacity to wear her pink bath robe! Clyde Atwell is clearly not in his element as he proceeds to throw a money wrench into Delaney's séance, demanding she get rid of her clients and listen to him. What will be Delaney's reaction be when Clyde informs her he's her Demonic ticket to hell?

Strap on your demon-kicking boots and get ready for a bumpy hilarious ride in Dakota Cassidy's Kiss and Hell! Delaney is one heck of a heroine, mommy to a pack of motley canines, just trying to balance the voices in her head. When Clyde literally drops into her life, she has serious misgivings about him. Given her best friend, Marcella, is also a Demon, Delaney has a hard time believing Clyde at first. As she works to figure out the mystery which is Clyde Atwell, she's ecstatic to finally find a man who "gets" her. Who else besides her brother, Kellen, and Marcella have readily accepted her unconditionally? Clyde not only understands her but gets under her skin in oh, so delightful ways, showing he's much more than a geek at heart.

If you love quirky characters like me, then Ms. Cassidy's Kiss and Hell needs to be added to your buy list today. Go on a wild, fun-filled ride as Delaney and Clyde team up forces to kick demon-kind to the curb, swapping trivia and red-hot lovin' well into the night!

1.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this..., June 10, 2010
This review is from: Kiss & Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
I really wanted to like this, having read the 'Accidental' serious books and finding them cute fun little romantic reads, but this thing... is just terrible. It's just, not cute, not fun, not well written. The main character is a drag that's to self absorbed and caught up in her own angst to be enjoyable. The 'heart-throb' is overly perfect in body and has a personality about as interesting as cardboard. Supporting cast of two, neither one very involved in anyway that improves the story. The villain is basically a no show for 98% of the book so we can spend more time with the main character's self pity, angst and bizarre canine collection...

((seriously crazy self loathing hippie medium chick with a collection of dogs that should have been put down, which she can't possibly pay enough attention to and make a living and somehow makes special things for each very unique handicapped dog and can't bother to name them... This makes sense and is appealing how?))

This tries very hard to be endearing and funny and fails miserably. Just do yourself a favor and read any other book by this author and give this one a miss.

The story was cute. A little too cute, although highly original. I guess it just wasn't what I was expecting and my hip-and-now phase passed by a few decades ago. It is good read for an airport or the beach.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wow and not in a good way, January 21, 2012
This review is from: Kiss & Hell (Kindle Edition)
I can't believe I passed up a good indie author for this. The narrative was completely filled with slang words I won't let my teenage daughter use because they sound moronic,(Fo Sho and my most hated phrase of the whole book, the bad ass, mofo demon all frontin' like he was some gangsta.) Really?!!!!!!! I can't believe she was actually published by a major publishing house! And romance reviews today, what are you thinking? This was the first book I have ever picked up of hers but I sure won't even bother looking at another. Indie authors may sometimes have typos or bad formatting but at least most of them use the English language. And I don't feel too jilted because I didn't pay fifteen dollars for it!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another laugh-out loud winner from Dakota Cassidy!, March 31, 2011
This review is from: Kiss & Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
A girl has to pay the rent and buy the kibble. Eight hundred dollars per each seance is pretty good money for a medium. But when a handsome demon starts interrupting with babble, Delaney sees her rent money fly right out the window.

Delaney Markham is a medium. She sees and hears dead people and tries to send them to the light. Seeing ghosts though can really play havoc with your love life. The last boyfriend she had saw her talking to a shower curtain, a dead sailor, and he thought she was crazy and ended their relationship. Since then, she hasn't had a boyfriend since. She has her babies, her six dogs, that she cares for and that keep her company. They keep her busy as they all have their quirks. One has a Bedazzled diaper, one has diabetes, and the others all have their own ailments. Delaney loves them all, but it isn't the same as having the white picket fence, the babies, and that one true love.

Clyde Atwell is a demon first class from hell. He was clerking in the library at hell when he came upon a folder with Delaney's name on it. Upon perusal, he found out that she was supposed to be contracted for her soul soon by another demon named Clyve Atwell. Using the coincidence to his benefit, he changed one letter of the demon to suit his own name, and poof! Clyde finds himself soon talking to Delaney. But Clyde has his own mission in mind when he materializes into the mortal world, and it doesn't include taking Delaney's soul.

Clyde wants to find out what happened to him. He was mixing chemicals in his lab when there was an explosion. The next thing he knew, he woke up in hell. Delaney wants to find out why Satan wants her soul and deflect his mission. Even though she fears Clyde won't be able to handle her ghost-handling quirk, she still finds the chemistry between them too hot to not be explored. Clyde and Delaney are soon steaming up the sheets, dodging demons, celebrity ghosts, and unraveling the mystery surrounding Clyde's death. Delaney knows that Clyde will eventually have to go to the light and she accepts that. But she is soon not only fighting for her life, but her heart as well.

Another laugh-out loud winner from Dakota Cassidy! Her characters are quirky and full of attitude. Hell will never be the same with mediums like Delaney urging souls to the light before Satan can get them. Absolutely sexy, charming and wonderfully unique!

I picked this up because I am a fan of the Accidental series. The book is written in the same style as the Accidental series to some slang expressions are used. The same elements appear as in the Accidental series: romance, some humor, female lead suffering from a paranormal affliction, attractive male enters the picture...fun ensues. My two main complaints is that it was a bit confusing how Clyde's soul broke free from his body and ended up in Hell and also the fight with Lucifer was a bit lacking.
