Book Description

USA TODAY BESTSELLER

In Bronwen Evans’s Loveswept debut, a pair of damaged souls ignite each other’s deepest passions—even as they tempt fate by deceiving the world.

Desperate to escape her abusive past, Sarah Cooper disguises herself as a governess in the employ of Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, the man who, long ago, she fantasized about marrying. Despite the battle scars that mar his face, Sarah finds being near Christian rekindles her infatuation. A governess, however, has no business in the arms of an earl, and as she accompanies Christian on his voyage home, Sarah must resist her intense desires—or risk revealing her dangerous secrets.

One of the renowned Libertine Scholars, Christian Trent once enjoyed the company of any woman he chose. But that was before the horrors of Waterloo, his wrongful conviction of a hideous crime, and his forcible removal from England. Far from home and the resources he once had, Christian believes the life he knew—and any chance of happiness—is over . . . until his ward’s governess sparks his heart back to life, and makes him remember the man he used to be. Now Christian is determined to return to England, regain his honor, and win the heart of the woman he has come to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!! February 3, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
A Kiss of Lies is a wonderful book, I just loved it.
Sarah Cooper was a loverly character I liked her very much. After her horrendous marriage she proved she was strong and a survivor, and of cause she was very caring of others. But Sarah had a very big secret.
Christian Trent had gone through horrors of his own, being injured so badly is something I can not imagine. He was very honourable and caring towards others, a real gentleman. But he'd been falsely charged with rape and wanted to clear his name.
I think Sarah and Christian made a great couple, they needed each other emotionally, and together the romance was very hot. The storyline was very well written and at times very emotional, I felt a sense of relief as the story unfolded and their problems were solved, I felt myself that close to to characters.
I'm definitely going to be reading more off this series as I really enjoyed reading this heartwarming romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Turned into a very dark book February 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The writing by Bronwyn Evans was really good. About a third of the way into the story, I just got turned off by the violence, rape, brutality that started being told in the story. Very dark and felt oppressive. All the characters, except for Lily, were so excruciatingly intense. Ended unfinished in many ways. After reading I feel rather depressed and in need of a bath, book left a yucky feeling.

2.0 out of 5 stars It could have been better February 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In Kiss of Lies, Ms. Evans has created likable characters and an intriguing plot. Unfortunately there are some elements that kept this story from being much better than it might have been. Bear in mind that the female protagonist Sarah/Serena is the victim of a very abusive marriage and is understandably wary of men, marriage and sex. Yet, 10% of the way into the story, about page 30 or so, she's in our hero's bedroom in her nightgown ogling him while he's asleep and naked and allowing him to kiss and fondle her. At the point that this happens she's known him less than 24 hours. I read the rest of the story with a very jaundiced eye after that. I think romance authors need to trust the patience of their readers a little more.

Beyond that, there were some continuity errors and occasional lapses into modern language. As far as historical accuracy is concerned, the author makes several references to the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad's earliest known history was in the 1820s and the term underground railroad did not come into use until the 1840s. Given that this novel is set in 1815, it's highly unlikely that Sarah/Serena made her escape from Virginia to Canada via the UR. That's very sloppy work on the author's part.

Bottom line: I'm sorry this wasn't a better book. It is the first in a series and had it been better written I might have read the next one.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Kiss of Lies April 8, 2014

I was enjoying the story but it ended without solving who was trying to murder them. I kept going back thinking my ipad skipped some pages before the epilogue. I guess it left an opening for future books but the ending left me disappointed

A KISS OF LIES by Bronwen Evans is a fast paced Historical Romance. What an exciting beginning to a new series, “The Disgraced Lords” #1. I absolutely loved this title. It is fast paced and filled with passion, adventure, mystery, suspense, danger, and love. Although, it leaves you holding your breath for the next installment, what a story! The sins of the fathers are visited or forced upon the sons. Someone is trying to kill Christian and Sarah, as well as the other renowned Libertine Scholars, maybe for something their father’s did years prior. Follow, Christian Trent, Earl of Markham and Sarah Cooper, both have secrets, both are in danger of not only losing their hearts but their lives. Oh, yeah, Christian’s little ward is a hand full and one you can’t help but fall in love with also. Christian, was scarred in war in more ways than one. Sarah, is running from an abusive past. Well written with engaging characters as well as a plot to literally die for, how can you go wrong with “A Kiss of Lies”. You do not want to miss a moment of “A Kiss of Lies”. Well done!! I can hardly wait for the next installment. Ms. Evans is an engaging, talented Historical Romance author. A must read! OMG! For readers who enjoy mystery, suspense, passion and romance, this is a must read! Received for an honest review from the publisher and Net Galley.

2.0 out of 5 stars A third of the way done and I'm struggling to finish April 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I might have gotten suckered in by the other reviews and the price but I'm seriously struggling to finish this.

So many words and pages spent discussing how the hero and heroine want each other. I get it already. But despite her past (I won't comment on this anymore than I have to in order not to spoil the plot) she allows him to take verbal and physical liberties from the very beginning all the while knowing that he only wants her as a mistress. And *then* he has the brilliant idea that if he gets her to think that he only wants her as a mistress and not a wife he'll earn her trust and get her to the altar. Knowing what he knows of her dead husband's treatment (although he doesn't know how bad it was) he thinks this is a good idea. Mmmmmmkay.

We won't even get to the parts where they both repeatedly act so far out of the accepted standards of society for that period. She answers her door at night in a knee-length shift? Really? In a house with two bachelors ... one of whom has made his physical intentions perfectly clear? I'm not buying what the author is trying to sell but ...

I'm working my way through the final 2/3 of the book because I keep hoping I'll be proven wrong at some point.

I had to make myself finish the book. The love scenes were rushed and faked. Okay for free but I would not buy it. The author needs to go back and give it some thought.
