Scott Nicholson and Richard Coldiron are "co-authors" of Richard Coldiron's autobiography "As I Die Lying." Richard Coldiron is a victim of a troubled childhood, of cruel beatings, probable incest, alcoholic parents, a wrecked home-life, and very little love. No wonder his mind (the Bone House) is somewhat twisted and has to do all kinds of tricks so its owner can survive. And Richard is a survivor. As a child, he has an invisible friend who lessens his pain by whisking him away and taking the punishment in his stead. Later in life though, four slightly more problematic "friends" or voices in his head take control: Little Hitler, Loverboy, Mister Milktoast (what a name), and Bookworm, who sometimes get him out of difficult situations, take the blame for murder and mayhem, but also create the most dangerous and destructive situations. And, on top of it, we have the Insider, that creepy, selfish fellow, the devilish monster, evil incarnate, who manipulates the story of Richard's life to his own advantage.

The book is a literary treasure, creepy and cruel, witty, sarcastic, full of dark humor and with an undercurrent of sadness, but, most of all, enormously entertaining with great dialogue. It is a fascinating study of human psychology, of the conflicting voices and emotions in all of us, the darkness that lurks in the back of our minds and, if left unrecognized, threatens to overpower what's good in us. And last, but most importantly, it is a story of redemption and love. I heard rumors that Sigmund Freud turned around in his grave, pounding the coffin walls with his fists (or what was left of them), condemning the book. The real reason, however, was he was extremely upset that he didn't write it himself....

I would give this so-called "worst novel ever written" six stars but Amazon only allows for five, so five it is. Read more ›

This book is unlike any other Nicholson book that I've read, and I've about read them all. In fact, it's not quite like any other book I've read. Richard Coldiron is a normal guy--if you consider normal as having multiple individuals living in your head. Nicholson does a great job of capturing the feeling of what Coldiron is going through, living with multiple individuals vying for control of one body.

This was a great read, and if you consider Nicholson as a "horror" writer, you need to give this one a try. Nicholson showcases his tremendous versatility in this book, and it lacks none of his trademark rich prose.

This wasn't my favorite of Nicholson's work, thus the 3-star rating. It's written as a stream of consciousness narrative by the protagonist which, in the beginning was nearly too frenetic for me to continue. But Nicholson is a brilliant writer, so I was reluctantly pulled into the story and had to finish it. If you're interested in what goes on in the mind of a serial killer, this is the book for you; he has you feeling as much sympathy for the killer as for the victims. Here's a sample of Nicholson's descriptive talent: "Miles away, people huddled in front of the blue campfires of television sets, frantic from having too much time and burdened with having to spend it all." His insight into the human condition and his ability to express it all in his unique voice makes everything he has written worth reading... even if it's not my favorite.

I had absolutely no expectations when I started to read this book. I wanted to find new authors to enjoy and my eyes landed on this title. From the beginning, I had problems reading this book. I kept getting kicked out of the plot but seemingly random comments from and conversations between the main character and the "author". Maybe it was too meta for me?

It was great to read about the inner workings of a killer, learn what made him and why he killed. But something was missing and the structure of the novel didn't help me get into it. On the contrary, it was working against the novel, it made me enjoy it less. There were moments where I was just skimming through, not patient (or masochistic) enough to suffer though long descriptions that were irrelevant at best.

I will probably try something else from this author,but not for some time.

I love when I make a good choice! This was a good book that I wanted to read non-stop. The only problem is, I haven't found another one as good and I keep getting let down because I compare it to this one. My sister liked it, too and she is as picky as potato knees.

I am a hige fan of Scott's writing and always find his books extremely enagaging and always on target. This book is- well different. Now different can be considered as a polite insult- sort of like having a wonderful personality. However this book is quite simply, in a word, without running on....Brilliant. If you are a fan of the genre you simply must give this book a chance. Nicholson should be a household name- and in our house he already is.

The main character, Richard Coldiron, is a definite whackjob--and I feel his pain! Which is what it's all about, right? This "autobiography" (you poor man! Or "men"?) had me creeped out from the beginning and sympathetic with poor Richard--at first. Then I didn't know if I should trust this guy's feelings and actions...
I had to step away a few times, but I always came back. At the end, I had read a great book. Scott Nicholson has a knack for description and dialogue, and the interaction of the guys in Richard's brain keeps you guessing. A word of advice: Don't use Loverboy's "romantic" phrases on your first or even third date.
To Scott Nicholson: You are indeed a sick puppy--in a good way! "Worst Novel Ever Written"--NOT! And rejected no more!
