Loved it!,
This review is from: Kiss of Night: A Novel (Kindle Edition)
I bought this book in a whim and then didn't read it right away after I had read a few customer reviews giving somewhat negative feedback on the romance side of the story. But let me tell you, I just devoured this book! I literally could not put it down, and when I did it was to sleep, and I was so anxious to find out what happened next I was even dreaming about the book. LolIt was amazing, it captured my interest from the start and theres actually two love stories, plus a hint of a love story of past. The two main live stories are between Susan and Raphael, the vampire, and between Wendy and David, the human turned vampire slayer. It is beautifully woven between the main four characters points of view with a focus in Susan and Raphael as the main points of interest. It's great because it's about falling in love. Not, we are already in love, here's our story, but you get to experience them falling in love, and you get to chew over all the pros and cons, right and wrong, good and bad why they should or shouldn't. And in the end you're rooting for a happily ever after. There's action, and mystery but not too much that you feel like you're running from one battle to the next. It's well paced, with the perfect blend of down time for the two couples to bond. I absolutely loved the use of history and biblical references as a fresh new way to explain her theory on vampirism. Very very cool. I loved this story and can not wait another year for the next book. Pick this one up now and be prepared for no sleep until you've finished it. Absolutely amazing!

Great book!,

I picked this book up cause it intrigued me so much! A christian vampire? Now, that is something new. I had never read anything like this before and was excited to read it. I can tell you that right from the start, I was hooked! What I liked most about this book is the plot. Paced perfectly, Ms. Viguie snags the reader with her brilliant writing, holding on to the reader tight. I loved the pacing of the book flowed well with the back round history of it. There was no confusion, just good writing that lead you further in the history of vampires. I adored all the characters. Both characters went through a lot of change but did not hold back feelings. I love how the characters were immediately passionate, fierce, and loyal. Ms. Viguie makes it easy to slip into the characters shoes. The reader is able to go back in time and see things from a whole new point of view. I loved the biblical references. Ms. Viguie did a great job in capturing the essence of The Knights Templar, Christian history as well as God. It may seem a little weird at first, but with the way Ms. Viguie mixes it all together, the reader has no problem reading it. Kiss of Night is a great book that I can read over and over again. Filled with non-stop action, fierce love, and great writing, Ms. Viguie created a world that I thought could never be done.

Terrific Vampire Story with a Twist!,
This review is from: Kiss of Night: A Novel (Paperback)
It's that time of year again when the trick-or-treaters come knocking on your door and the bitter chill of winter is just around the corner. It's the perfect time of year for spooky stories of the paranormal and supernatural persuasion. This Fall I'm happy to say at least one of the many new releases is worth reading.I've never read a book by Debbie Viguie but I've seen her names on some pretty well-known titles like Charmed and Crusade. I was a bit skeptical going into this story being as I've only read one Christian fiction vampire story that I liked but I'm glad all the worry was for naught. Kiss of Night is terrific, it grabs you by the throat and doesn't let up (yes this review will be full of vampire cliches). For those of you who don't like "edgy" fiction this probably isn't for you but if you're up for a twist on the traditional vampire story I highly recommend this book. Even readers who aren't fans of Christian fiction but love a vampire tale will be sucked in. I loved that the author made the vampire into a redeemable character but didn't gloss over that they came from the deepest, darkest depths of human society. There were a few times where I was confused as to how vampires were created but the plot was so fast-paced that I was compelled to keep reading to find out what happened next. There's a hint of romance too that makes Kiss of Night all that more intriguing. I definitely see the potential for romance for both Susan and her sister Wendy. Did I mention that one of these is/could be a forbidden romance? Oo la la! The only thing I didn't like was the ending--SUCH a cliffhanger but I guess that means a sequel is in the works. ;-) * I received my complimentary PDF from the publisher through Netgalley for the blog tour.*

I was very anxious to review this book and I wasn't disappointed...at least not till the end. Now I have to wait till 2012 for the next book in the series.Susan is just a young woman who is in Prague for the funeral of her beloved grandmother who raised her. She seeks solace and sanctuary in church before the funeral and thinks she hears whispers and gets a glimpse of a dark figure. That night Susan gets dragged out by her cousin, Wendy, to go dancing. It seems Wendy has met a guy but Susan finds him creepy. Suddenly Wendy takes off and another dark man warns Susan that Wendy is in trouble. Susan discovers just how creepy and dark these guys are as she becomes the focal player in a battle of good vampires versus bad vampires. She is frightened by Raphael but also strangely drawn to him. Raphael knows that Susan is to help him in the battle against the truly evil vampires. Not that all vampires weren't evil and monsters when they were created. But some vampires have learned to seek redemption after years of seeing the consequences of their misdeeds. Raphael is on the side of good although he hasn't quite gotten to the point of seeking salvation. His monk/vampire friend, Paul, holds out great hope. Another stranger, David, hears the commotion in the next hotel room and tries to rescue Wendy from what appears to be an attacking vampire. David seems to have a natural resistance to Vampire mesmerism and is quickly caught up to be trained as a warrior for the impending fight. I liked the protagonists and the good vampires who are interesting characters. Wendy and David are likeable and make a nice cozy couple too. David becomes an unlikely but brave and valiant warrior. I felt there were some flaws and unrealistic circumstances in the tale, including some simplistic writing. Still I liked the overall story which kept my attention with its intensity and mystery. It is very fast paced and full of action. I read it in two days and was really unhappy only because it ended -- at a crucial stage of events! Ack!

I've read the author's other Christian fiction books (The Psalm 23 Mysteries, so I got this one to read. I wasn't sure about the vampire idea, but the book did not disappoint. This was an awesome read, and I am looking forward to the other 2 books in the trilogy

Favorite christian vampire story,
This review is from: Kiss of Night: A Novel (Paperback)
Susan is in Prague with her family for her Grandmother's funeral. When Susan's cousin almost dies before being saved by the vampire Raphael, he demands Susan's help in return. Susan begin discovers a family legacy that has been entangled in vampire conflicts since the crusades as she is pulled into a vampire war.I'll start by saying that I am creeped out VERY easily. But vampires have never really bothered me because my dad would make fun of them. The existence of vampires doesn't really jive with Christian theology, you know, being damned against your own free will and all that. Well no longer. Thanks to [author:Debbie Viguié|174708] I'm back to cowering under the covers. I enjoyed the descriptions of Prague and the use of bible verses(who knew there were so many creepy verses about blood?) But what I found the most interesting was the fact that Raphael needs Susan's help because she acknowledges the existence of good and evil and she can tell the difference between them. He says, "Most people don't truly understand the nature of good and evil." I can't wait for the next one!

Intriguing Vampire tale!,
By
This review is from: Kiss of Night: A Novel (Paperback)
This was a really interesting story, with an interesting take on Vampires. I have to say I was first drawn to this story because of the cover it is intriguing and gorgeous. The story itself sounded so interesting too, which it was. It's a story about good and evil, amongst even the supposed evil. This story has a lot of heart, and intrigue.Susan Lambert and her extended family head to Prague for the the funeral of their grandmother Constance. While there Susan, has strange feeling that there is more to Prague than meets the eye. She is a little unnerved by the strange feeling that she has about the place. Then one night she is approached by a strange man who tells her her cousin is in danger and that she must fallow him. Like a smart girl she refuses him, but he tells her that he wants to help her and that he is a Vampire, and that her cousin Wendy is with an evil Vampire. She is a little, okay, a lot shocked that those myths about Vampires are true. She resists but Raphael insists. So the journey, and fight for good and evil begins. Susan is right in the middle because of a gift that was given her by her grandmother, and for the fact of who her grandmother is. She must help Raphael, Paul and David save the world from the evil vampires who want to control all. I really liked the concept of how one becomes a vampire in this story, I thought it was unique. I also enjoyed the flow of the writing, I felt like I was right there with the characters. The character development was wonderful too. I loved Susan and her sense of being courageous, helping out and fighting for good. At times she did annoy me with her relationship with Raphael, yes he is a vampire, yes she has feelings for him but she is so very confused in those feelings, and yet he has proven himself to be good. Raphael is a lovable, gorgeous (they always are, aren't they) vampire, who fights his nature, who wants to be good and worthy of salvation, and worthy of Susan even though he is this monster. David is a strong, full of chivalry, and is committed to the cause for good. He is amazing with Wendy, so kind and gentle and in love. Wendy is the ditsy cousin, who isn't sure what she has gotten herself into half of the time. I loved Raphael's back story, he is so very intriguing. The whole story is very interesting, and full of adventure. I enjoyed this new concept of vampire folklore, and look forward to reading this particular story as it continues to unfold. Great new spin on the classic vampire story,
This review is from: Kiss of Night: A Novel (Paperback)
Kiss of Night puts a whole new spin on the classic vampire story. Vampirism, it turns out, is a curse bestowed on men and women who are so depraved, they need more than a standard lifetime to turn from wickedness and be redeemed. Raphael is one of those men. A crusader who killed everyone in his path, Raphael killed for the joy and thrill of killing. Now a 700-year-old vampire, Raphael wants the help of Susan, descendant from a line of humans who can sense the supernatural, to defeat a group of vampires that have resisted redemption and have only become more evil as they age.Kiss of Night is good supernatural Christian fiction, a genre that's relatively new to me but one that I absolutely love. Along with the idea that no one is beyond redemption, the story effortlessly weaves in themes of sacrifice, love and prayer that flows well and is never preachy. Raphael is swoon worthy and the budding relationship between him and Susan, though a bit quick, is still well done. I was (very pleasantly) surprised that the couple kiss passionately on more than one occasion, you don't usually find that in Christian fiction. I loved the vampire mythology and Raphael's flashbacks to times before and after he was turned. While I enjoyed Kiss of Night, the book does have some minor flaws. The story is told from alternating character perspectives and I found the constant change a bit jarring. Additionally, as I mentioned before, the romances in the story develop quickly. The story is fast paced, thrilling and leaves mysteries that will hopefully be unfolded in upcoming sequels. The book does end in a wicked cliffhanger but that's what keeps us coming back, right? I will definitely be reading upcoming books in this series. I recommend this for anyone who is looking for something a little different in supernatural/paranormal fiction. I decided to read this book because I was curious. I really didn't think I'd like it. Was I surprised!I really enjoyed this book. It was different. If you're looking for something a little off of the usual vampire-romance path, you might like this, too. Can't wait for the next one to come out!

Suspend your belief and this vampire story works well,

This review is from: Kiss of Night: A Novel (Paperback)
I don't normally read vampire stories though I have been intrigued with all the vampires that have been popping up in Christian fiction lately. Some of the books have been written well, others seem like the author was just trying to latch onto the latest trend. This new book from Debbie Viguie is one that has caught my eye because I know that she has written several YA paranormal books in the general market. Therefore she knows how to write for both audiences and I was looking forward to seeing how she would be able to skillfully blend vampires and faith together. In order to read this book, I feel that one has to remove themselves from reality and place themselves into the world that Viguie has created. It's an alternate world, one where vampires and Jesus both exist. That itself could be highly controversial so it's best to not over think the story and just read it for enjoyment. The vampires in this book are those that have been punished because of the abhorrent and evil behavior. They are not sparkly by any means. I was surprised at the references to all the traditional stereotypes of warding off vampires used in the book, apparently garlic and crosses are lethal. Romance and sexual tension play a role in this book. I feel like there's a lot of smoldering being done with some of the characters. When it comes to the faith issue, I found the concept of vampires and Christianity intriguing though I will admit I didn't ponder it too much. To me this is a story to escape in and not to make me feel like I need to analyze it. I didn't find the religious references to be overly dominant. There are Bible verses at the beginning of each chapter that all reference blood in them. Other than this, there is also talk about the Crusades as well as a vampire monk. However I felt that this all fit with the story and didn't seem out of place in the world Viguie has created. I will be interested to see if non Christian fiction readers think there is too much religious emphasis and if Christian fiction readers think there is too little. Overall, I have to say it's an intriguing read. To me, it reads more like paranormal romance than anything with some faith aspects thrown in. I wonder how those Bible verses at the beginning of each chapter were chosen. Did someone go on Biblegateway.com and search for all verses containing the word blood in it? I feel like the story has potential especially with how it just felt like it abruptly ended and we need to wait for the next book. I found it to be an entertaining read. Others who read more vampire fiction books that me probably will have more in depth things to say but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. |
