The Execution of America,
By
This review is from: Kiss the Pig (Audio CD)
This album is as disturbing as disturbing can be. While not as captivating as their previous schizophonic masterpiece _Sadness Will Prevail_, it is more brutal, a bloodbath of sound. Starting with the pictures in the CD alone, you receive the unequivocal message that these guys are insane with rage at the world and WILL do something about it. Pictures of Steve & Co. aiming guns from his arsenal at targets, targets including you. Worst of all, the words "Sadness Will Prevail" scarified into Steve's (?) back, dripping fresh blood.
With all these visual testaments to the real-life guns & blood in their lives, you hear the grossly morbid words and music and begin to wonder if these guys are turning cult on all of us, a blood-cult like Koresh's Branch Davidians. Read the lyrics closely and you are really no closer to the answer. This is just disturbing from the endless bottom to the endless high-end of Steve's brashly and innovatively recorded grind guitars. Oh!!! And superb blast beats. Gut-rumbling bass from Chris DeBarri a la Mastodon. And one hell of a scary death trip. Whatever psychological malfunctions any of these gentlemen have, it is a truly sobering and serious look at all the worst things in the world (especially Iraq, but you can apply to any number of world fiascoes), making it like the extreme-metal version of the schizophrenic Surrealist Antonin Artaud (inventor of the theater of cruelty). He would have approved of this sick s**t--you will, too, if you have as much tolerance for terroristic and mind-numbingly wrong-feeling sounds and words.

GEEEEEEEEEENIUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSS!,

Beautiful! I bought an imported CD and it was expensive but, boy was it worthy! Amazing! I just can't believe what I'm hearing as I write this review. Kiss The Pig is one of the greatest things I've heard. Its pure orchestrated madness will make you ask for more when it's over. I'm so excited with this release. Because of this I'm intending to buy all Today Is The Day CDs. They are this good.
Songs are intentionally creepy at times. The only flaw I see is the production. It sounds like a demo. But I guess that's why it's so intense. A must have for any metalcore (or hardcore or whatever) fan!!!!

Not the Best Today is the Day,
By Bob (Philadelpha, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kiss the Pig (Audio CD)
I just wanted to say to the guy who thought that the new Today is the Day album, "Kiss the Pig" was horrible. He said he threw it out. Well, this isn't the the Today is the Day album to get started on. If you never had heard them before, try the albums "Temple of the morning star," "In the eyes of God," and their two disc, incredible release, "Sadness will prevail." I was a little dissapointed with this album myslef, and i'm a big fan. You have to see them live, though, there's nothing like it. This album is also very short. But, coming off a two disc set like they did must be hard. You mentioned their lyrics being horrible, and to be honest, i've never been "in love" wiht TITD lyrics. Some are good, some seem generic. But, the reason I love this band is the vocals of Steve Austin. I don't know what kind of stuff he uses to get all of those sounds. And i saw them live, right in front of them, and he is an incredible guitar player. He also has his own studio and records all TITD albums and has recorded bands like Lamb of God. Well, give them a shot, like i said, pick up, "Temple of the morning star," "IN the eyes of God," and "Sadness will prevail." I think you'll have a differnt opinion of them.

Grindcore at it's best,

If you are into bands such as Pig Destroyer or Dillinger Escape Plan. Get this album, Today is The Day's Kiss The Pig. It's raw material and crazed beats and unstoppable guitar riffs, this is the album to own. It's intensity drives onward after every song. The album gets better as it progresses. And completely shutting everything down and slowly revising itself with the last song birthright. No grindcore colletction is complete without this masterpiece. It's Grindcore at it's best.

Good, but not their best,
By
This review is from: Kiss the Pig (Audio CD)
The latest release from Today Is The Day, while strong on intensity and rage, seems to lack the depth of previous releases such as 'In The Eyes of God' and 'Temple Of The Morning Star.' This is slightly understandable; their previous release, the 2-disc 'Sadness Will Prevail' is hard to top. That said, 'Kiss The Pig' is definitely a solid release with plenty of the crushing riffs that their fans have grown used to - it just seems to fall short of the typical madness that surrounds a TITD disc. However, anyone who has seen them live can attest to the genius of Steve Austin - no doubt these songs will transition quite well to the stage.

One of the most intense, emotional albums ever!!!,
By Jon Gunter (Greensboro, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kiss the Pig (Audio CD)
I never really understood Steve Austin's musical insanity that doubles as creative genius until about two years ago when I saw Today is the Day perform live. The emotion and strength in the music is amazing. Two years later, I have been longing for something new by this band. I have inhaled and gorged myself on their previous albums, all amazing in their own right. It is safe to say that with 'Kiss the Pig,' Steve Austin and the collective known as Today is the Day have created one of the most hate-filled, emotional records of all time. Fans of earlier TITD albums ('In the Eyes of God,' particularly) will be happy to hear that this album is not as experimental as their previous 2-disc epic, 'Sadness Will Prevail.' The songs are short, maniacal blasts of sheer intensity that take the listener on a journey into the blackest and darkest of emotions while stabbing, kicking, and punching the listener all the way through. Austin takes shots (literally, the first thing you hear at the beginning of the disc are two rifles being loaded) at our greedy, materialistic society, as evident on the first track, 'Why They Hate Us.' The patented mind-controlling guitar riffs are still there, as is Austin's disturbed screech. Chris Debari's bass sound is huge, as is Mike Rosswog's drums. Rosswog (new to the fold) adds a huge level of intensity to the band's already-enormous sound. Rosswog's precise blasts just make the music even angrier, going from full-on blast beats into slow, sludgy sections that just absolutely destroy the listener. The riffs are some of the most evil riffs you'll ever hear. Words just can't describe the way this music makes the listener feel. Every song is amazing, but the closing track, 'Birthright,' is the pinnacle of Austin's previous hateful venting. The very end of the song features a beautiful acoustic guitar melody, signifying the purging of all of this hateful emotion. This is an utterly brilliant record. The production is thick, but not too thick to decipher. The song structures have been well thought-out and the lyrics are some of the bleakest, desolate lyrics you'll ever read or hear. Coupled with the music, this could thoroughly depress even the toughest-eared of listeners. If you're a fan of their music or a new listener, this is a great way to know what real, emotional music sounds like. It will absolutely destroy you.

ANOTHER UNSUNG CLASSIC:,

Much like Trent Reznor of NIN Steve Austin of TITD is the heart and soul of said band name.Unlike NIN Austin thrives on brutality and obscurity like a maggot on rotten flesh. He has been at this for some time and I came in on the release of"In The Eyes Of God"very much by accident by way of bordem with the same old same old.I had never heard anything by or from TITD b4.When I listened to that cd I went back the next day and bought 3 others the record store had at that time.It was many years after that"Sadness Will Prevail"their double disc follow up to their previous live cover album was released but it was worth it even if the damn thing is at times an unlistenable wall of white noise. So enter 04 with"Kiss The Pig"a much briefer voyage into the mind of one of musics most intense yet unknown by virtually everyone above and below ground. What can I say about this...its loud....hard to listen to(yet again of course)...brilliant...unflinching....unnerving....I kind of do and dont want Today is the Day exposed to a broader audience.I do because they deserve a much larger fanbase and I dont because where they are now Austin can get away with virtually anything and that allows for the creativity to flow without ANY compramise. Each cd this band has released is different in tone but the atomosphere is the same...very hostile, very emotional, very uninviting. Which suits me all too well which is why I love this band so much. If you like either Converge or Pig Destroyer you might like Today is the Day. Be warned you might need some anti-depressants or at least a hot shower after a few listens.

High Potential/Low Production,
By anthony "smallcreatures" (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews

Okay, this is my first taste of TITD so forgive me if I've offended some hardcore TITD fans. As I state in the title, this band gives me the feeling that previous albums were kick a-- however Kiss The Pig in my opinion falls short. I really blame the production for my lack of enjoyment here. The muffled sound of the instruments gives no justice to the talent behind them. The screams are awesome and unique from any other band though. Too bad they drown out the music that is already hard to distinguish. I also understand if the band wanted to keep a raw feeling to the album but thats not my taste. I believe if you're going to release an album you should put effort into the production because the real talent of playing the instruments is then lost somehow. I'll keep my ears drawn for the next release and maybe dip into there past albums because I'm not totally dismissing this band.

I've finally heard TITD, and I like it,
By Mono-Grind "dtb" (Here) - See all my reviews

Ever since i read somewhere about Today is the Day being so extreme, so off-putting, so uncomfortable to listen to, i thought i had to listen to them to truly believe the hype. But up unil now i couldn't find a CD of theirs. Until I saw (finally) "Kiss the Pig", and i quickly picked it up. To say this is extreme, uncomfortable, and off-putting is a gross understatement. Today is the Day remind me of Pig Destroyer and Vital Remains put together. Brutal. And uncomfortable.
I don't know alot about the band to be honest. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing either. I think it's good in one way because at least there is a bit of mystery to the band. And i think it's bad in another way, as i can't say much about this CD, except...If you want something really uncomfortable, something pretty extreme, something pretty off-putting, some shrill vocals that sound like a mix of the guy from AC/DC and a little girl, some damn good heavy headbanging tunes... I could go on, but if you want all that and more horrifying music that sounds like the end of the world, Buy this. It's extreme(ly uncomfortable).

What the hell,
By dk (Paris, France) - See all my reviews

What the hell of an album it is. I've considered Steve Austin as the most fascinating, exciting, moving, emotional music composer since I heard the first album of TITD (while other, in these times, listened to Nirvana) and the problem to be or not deceived by an album of TITD is absolutely inappropriate. Keep that for the rest of the rock world, not for artists (how many in the rock world ? a hand is enough to count). In rock music, Steve Austin is not far to be the Antonin Artaud we need. This album is abrasive, violent and unpleasant as are our times. The last track is a masterpiece (should we say a masterwar). Few albums will do better this year.
And those who admit hating this band, spare us your commentaries and go back to your easy-to-listen simili-genius. |
