From the Back Cover

It's not easy being a Vampire Angel.

No one knows that better than Trond Sigurdsson. In the centuries since he last went out drinking and wenching with his Viking buds, Trond has been a gladiator, a cowboy, a ditch digger . . . even a sheik. But now he's the baddest of them all: a kick-ass Navy SEAL kicking butts of terrorist immortals with the help of his hotter-than-Hades female partner, police officer-turned-Special Forces operative Nicole Tasso—whom Trond dearly hopes to "partner" with very shortly in a whole different way.

The "cop" part of Nicole tells her there's something bizarre about her gorgeous godlike teammate. But her "all-woman" side can't help wondering how great it would be to have a virile Viking in her bed. Trond has secrets galore, but Nicole feels certain she can dig them out—and really get to the heart of this powerful, unnerving stranger whom she may be risking her soul to love.

I was immediately intrigued when I read the synopsis for this book: A Viking vampire angel? What's not to like?

Captain Trond Sigurdsson will forever be 29 years old. He died in the year 850 A.D. in the age of the Vikings. Trond, along with his six brothers, are all Vangels: Viking Vampire Angels. Each brother is representative of one of the seven deadly sins, with Trond's being sloth. His motto was, "Work smarter, not harder." His mentor is St. Michael the Archangel, and the Vangels have been assigned to kill demon vampires (aka Lucipires or "Lucies") and to save the nearly-lost human souls. Trond's original penance was to serve as a Vangel for 700 years but, because he has erred a number of times over the centuries, the years have piled on and he has served over 1,000 years and counting.

Lucipires prey on humans that are on the brink of some particularly harsh sin. They bite the neck of the victim to put them in a state of stasis and then blow their unholy breath into the victim through any orifice, which puts them in a weakened state and more vulnerable to temptation. A victim will have the scent of lemons about them. Once the victim has committed the final sin to seal his fate, the Lucipire will drink from him until he is drained and the victim is then taken to the Underworld.

St. Michael has received word that Jasper, the king of the Lucipires, has sent some of his minions to recruit some Navy SEALs. St. Michael sends Trond and a younger Vangel, Karl, to join the SEAL's training program on the pretext that they were Jaegers from a top-secret Norwegian Special Forces team.

When Trond meets Lieutenant Nicole Tasso, a 28 year-old Navy WEAL ("Women on Earth, Air, Land and Sea"), there is an immediate attraction but neither wants to admit it.

Vampire books have taken over many shelves of our libraries and bookstores, so it's refreshing to come across one with an interesting take on the creature. In Kiss of Surrender, vampires are angels, either created by God's messenger, St. Michael the Archangel, or Lucifer himself--Vangels or Lucipires.

Trond and his brothers are former Vikings who now protect our world by ridding it of the Lucipire demons. In his newest role, Trond is a Navy SEAL at the center of many dangerous missions. But evil humans like Osama Bin Laden are nothing compared to what he's trying to destroy. He has a singular mission, and has for centuries... that is until he meets Nicole, an ex-cop and current Navy operative.

When Trond and Nicole are partnered for a dangerous undercover mission, he finds himself more and more drawn to her. He tries to push her away, but she can't deny her attraction either. In the midst of pure evil, they find their way to each other--a combustible heat that sears the pages. Both have their reasons for not giving into each other without a fight.

Once the story gets going, it's mired down with a lot of setup and background details initially, there's plenty of action and teasing romance. The really hot stuff is saved for the last third of the book. With a title like Kiss of Surrender, it was a bit disappointing to have to wait so long for the building heat between Trond and Nicole to pay off.

For fans of action and paranormal intrigue, there are some bright moments. I particularly enjoyed the side story of one of the Lucipires, Zebulan, feeling conflicted about torturing soul after soul. His character was one of the more interesting ones in the novel. But, I was frustrated with the main undercover operation.

I must admit that I didn't read the first book in the series but the author fills you in at the beginning. Each book seems to deal with a different Vangel, so you could technically read this as a stand alone.

It starts off with Trond in his viking days and the moment that St. Michael shows up and offers him a deal, become a Vangel (viking vampire angel) and help save humanity from Satan's Lucipires or die and burn in hell. With Trond being a man who is selfish, he decides to save his hide and sign up to be a Vangel. Fast forward a thousand years and he is now at a SEALs base. Where not only has he not changed one bit from his viking days but he's found himself under the microscopic eye of Lt. Nicole Tasso.

When I read the synopsis I thought it sounded like a fun new paranormal read. I've made it no secret that I am not a fan of angel books. They get to Almighty Heavenly Father on me and I end up calling it a day. However, even though Trond is a Vangel, he still acts like his old self. He swears and even though having sex is a major no-no, he has what he calls "near-sex". So considering that Trond doesn't walk around spreading the word of his God, I was cool with the story.

Nicole is one of those characters who overcame a rough past. She married young and fell in love with an abusive and controlling man. Bad part is, he was a cop, so not many people believed her when she reported him. She was able to escape him, left town and joined the SEALs. She's now a stronger character because of the obstacles she overcame. However, towards the middle of the book, it is brought to our attention that Nicole's 18yr old sister is engaged to her ex-husband. Nicole talks about going home to try and save her sister from the same marriage that she had.
