5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, June 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Kiss of Sweet Blues (Audio CD)
Kiss of Sweet Blues is an outstanding record. With deep roots in the great tradition of the blues, the album is a modern-day masterpiece of the genre. Bell reveals a style that is part B.B. King, part Robert Cray, and part Albert Collins. The result is unique and very satisfying. There are but a few weak points throughout the album. I am a fan of Buddy Guy, Jimi, Stevie, BB, John Mayall, etc. and this album has quickly become one of my favorites. Discover Lurrie Bell for yourself today!

I havnt heard such a good recording since the 60's Waters/Spann era. The combination of musicians, music and production make this cd one of the best of the hundreds I own. Thanks Delmark for a classical example of just how good blues can be

Bell is the color-outside-the-lines artist; genius when inspired, but still at his best within a structured environment,(he is still a blues player, free spirit or not). Specter is a guitar-player-arranger, much concerned with all things in their place, but familiar enough with Lurrie to know where to let inspiraton lead the way. Good on their own, great together.

Love Lurrie's guitar playing and singing, but Dave Specter adds something to this album that takes Lurrie up more than a notch. You say you haven't heard Dave Specter? Check out ANY of HIS albums (and all the albums he plays on as a sideman) and you won't go wrong. What a groove he gets going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent New Chicago Blues Recording, December 14, 2001

(...) This is an excellent album of Chicago blues that way its supposed to be. At times driving, at times laid back but never overdone the way a lot of younger artists tend to do things. Dave Specter's contribution is vital. It's the only time he's appeared backing Lurrie and he seems to bring out the second generation bluesman's best work. The band is tight, so is Lurrie, and this is one of the best albums of Chicago blues to have appeared in the last 10-20 years. It really is THAT good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet sweet blues!, May 19, 2000

Hard to beat this first rate blues cd. If you love the blues you will surely love lurrie bell. Everyone of the 15 cuts(yes 15!) on this cd are worth listening too. Lurrie's guitar is taught, presise and crisp on all songs. You never tire of this music.

The songs run from energetic to laid back. The title song "kiss of sweet blues" is hard to beat and "blues and black coffee" is a potential classic but it simply doesn't last long enough. Same for "drivin' through darkness" There is also a nice sampling of instrumental pieces that do well to show off lurrie's guitar genius.(Lurrie's guitar boogie, lurrie's funky grooove thing and lonesome guitar man.) This is all full blooded chicago blues the way it's supposed to be played. An imporatant edition to any blues collection. I'm high with the kiss of sweet blues, yeah!
