Good Place to Start - Must have to Complete Collection,

This review is from: A Kiss in Time (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
I first listened to Patty Griffin when her first album came out. I was living in Texas and thought Mad Mission one of the best songs of the year. I always wondered why KGSR played only Let Him Fly (a very good song) when Mad Mission was so stunning. And the version of Mad Mission on this CD is just so much...I won't say better...but amplified and fully realized . Even the performance of [Let Him] Fly is better and I was quite jaded by its constant rotation on the radio in 1996.I have all her albums and cannot recommend this one enough. Her live versions amplify and enhance the studio recordings from the other albums. It doesn't hurt that you have Buddy & Julie Miller and Emmylou Harris singing and playing along, but this album would still be a fantastic showcase without them. My favorites are Goodbye, Rain, Long Road Home, Tony, Mad Mission and Fly, although there is not a "skip" on the album.

Yes, I have to admit that I first heard this album while flying back and forth between NYC and San Francisco earlier this year, as part of United's in-air music programming. Well, let me say that somebody there is doing their job well.
I'd been curious about Patty Griffin's music before that, as I'd seen that she'd written some good songs used by the Dixie Chicks (FUTK), like "Let Him Fly" and "Truth No. 2." But I hadn't heard her own voice or playing until those flights, and am happy to say that I've not stopped listening to this album since. This collection covers a lot of territory, presenting songs from most (if not all) of her albums, and has a very bittersweet tone overall. Griffin's humble personality is very apparent when she introduces some of the songs and expresses her gratitude to some special guest musicians. The production is one of the better I've heard on a live album in a while, and effectively seems to capture the feel of seeing the show inside the Ryman. I'd recommend this as an excellent place to start for someone just getting into Patty Griffin's music. The accompanying DVD is also worth having, as it features a series of interviews with Griffin about her music and a couple of music videos.

A must-have!,

I was one of the fortunate souls to attend the concert in Nashville during which this album was recorded. It was an amazing evening and you will sense that as you listen to the lovely tracks captured on this CD. "Let Him Fly" is a perfect example of her vocal abilities - I've never heard anything like this version of it! And "Mary" - with Julie Miller and Emmylou Harris singing backup - will stop you in your tracks with its angelic harmonies. Although there is only one new song on the album, I think fans of Patty will enjoy the different versions of their favorites - from an all-acoustic version of "Christina" to an energetic version of "Mad Mission." Some of her between-songs comments are included and they are very fun! The DVD also gives you insight into Patty's humility and love for what she does.

I'm a wuss - she can make me cry,

I first caught wind of Patty when she opened for Lucinda Williams in the latter part of the 90's. The show was in the auditorium of an old mansion in the beautiful city of Des Moines, IA. I admit I had never heard of Patty, but when she came on stage with just a guitar and sang the most melodic and beautifully written songs I had heard in a long, long time...well, I was hooked. I went out and bought all her recordings and I have had the pleasure of enjoying her music ever since. I can't wait to hear her new album (I hear it will have her original version of Top Of The World) that comes out in April, and I hope to see her live once again. I guess this cd will have to hold me over until that time. Like all Patty fans, I enjoy all her music, especially songs as poetic and beautiful as Nobody's Cryin'. When the song gets to the part... May you dream you are dreaming, in a warm soft bed ..I have to admit it can move me to tears. And the fact that she is not more comercially known both saddens me and makes me happy. Sad in the fact that everyone doesn't know her as a household musical name, but happy in that I can have her as virtually my little musical secret, happily doleing out her music to friends knowing I'm bringing beautiful to their ears. If that makes me selfish so be it.

It's been quite awhile since I've heard anything that turned me on as much as this CD. Patty Griffin has always been a fine songwriter and indeed I've enjoyed her CDs, but this, this is a step beyond that. Here she gathered some of the finest musicians imaginable and took off on a tour, doing her music the way she wanted to do it. And the final concert, this one, in Nashville, at the old Ryman, is one of those magical occasions in music, where everything goes better than it has a right to. She's just perfect here! It's as if she had one really really really great performance in her, and boy, did she ever give it right here, for all of us to hear. I am just enthralled with the beauty of this performance. Even if you just kinda, sorta like her - grab this CD. I promise you, you'll end up loving Patty Griffin as much as I do! And that's a lot!

magical night captured,

I was at this show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville when they recorded it back in January, and the entire night was just pure magic. From the time she opened with the first words "long black limousine..." from "Long Ride Home", which is the opener on this CD, to the last song of her second unplanned encore was a breathtaking performance. I see a fair amount of live music, including several previous Patty Griffin shows, but this was one of the best concerts I have ever attended, ever, and I know several other people who have said the same thing. This recording of that special night does a pretty good job of capturing the essence of the evening. They left off some favorites, like "Making Pies" on which she had a small mistake with the words, but there's something here for everyone. Fans of hers will love the acoustic version of "Christina" and a non-rock and roll "Tony", as well as an incredible version of "Be Careful" with Julie Miller backing up and Emmylou Harris backing up on the always moving "Mary," and newcomers will find this a good survey of songs from her various albums. (hopefully then they'll go buy all the others). It seems that most people are either huge fans of Patty Griffin, or they have never heard her before. Very few hear her and then move on unfazed or unaffected by her music.I didn't even know they were recording this show when I saw it, and as the story goes they hadn't even really planned on making a CD out of the taping, just thought they'd record the special night for posterity sake (the tour was winding down to a close, and the album it was promoting got its start here in Nashvile, so this was kind of things coming full circle, plus the Ryman is so steeped in history, etc.), but I'm glad they did and we can all benefit from that decision. This CD hasn't left my changer since I purchased it the week it came out.

Excellent CD,

This CD was recorded on the tour for the "1,000 Kisses" album. Songs from "Flaming Red" and "Living with Ghosts" are also included. I am a huge fan of her work and I am normally wary of "live" recordings. "A Kiss in Time" is solid, start to finish. If you are a fan of her work, I highly recommend this CD. If you are unfamiliar with her work, this would be an excellent place to start appreciating her amazing talent.

An art of her own...a "no regrets" buy....,

When Ms. Griffin sings it is as though her voice has stopped just short of crying. And, yet, the lyrical quality of her music never seems self-indulgent. She can be the reflective heiress, the friend of a gay suicide, the lonely, pleading lover with neither the phelgmatic drift that takes hold of so many poetic songwriters, nor its equally possessive histrionic counterpart. There is a tension to her music. This live recording, with her occassional comments between numbers, serves to loosen things up a bit. I wish Ms. Griffin had a wider following, more acclaim, etc. Yet, then again, there is an intimacy to her sound that might well sacrificed in the process. At any rate, there is nothing lost in A Kiss in Time.

Patty Kicks Live!,
By
This review is from: A Kiss in Time (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
I've seen Patty live. It's an experience. If the only song that Patty had ever written and performed had been Mary I would still be a huge fan. This selection of songs is perfect (I only wish there could be more!) From the opening with the line "Long black limonsine..." from the song Long Ride Home to the very close, this CD is perfect. Christina is deeply moving in this pared-down voice and guitar-only version prefaced by an explanation of the song's inspiration (I'm listening to this song right now - sigh!). Rain is a song that I relate to from personal experience and it chokes up both on 1,000 Kisses and with this flawless live version. Mad Mission and Fly are a couple of Patty favorites from "Living With Ghosts" that she delivers perfectly here. And Mary with Emmylou? What could be better (OK, last night I saw Patty in concert with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Dar Williams and Shawn Colvin. The final encore was Mary with the three other artists on back-up harmonies. THAT could be better! Unfortunately, I don't think it was recorded, so we'll have to "settle" for this version. If you love Patty (no one just LIKES Patty!) then you'll ADORE Patty live! The bonus DVD has two music videos to the songs Rain and Chief plus chat with Patty and snippets from her solo tour. WHAT A DEAL!

I've been a fan of patties for a couple years and have all her CD's. I looked at the song list on A Kiss in Time and since I allready had all the songs except 10 million miles I wasn't sure it offered anything new. I gave in and went ahead a bought it.This cd BLEW ME AWAY. It has instantly become my favorite. Patty live is otherworldly and this CD takes you to the front row. Christina, Peter Pan, and Mary are my favorites w/ all the others close behind. What an amazing talent is this woman. It has given new light to old songs and made me weep again. If you want the best that has been recorded then buy this CD. |
