If kids today are at all interested in fogies like the Grateful Dead and Judas Priest, the Rebels of Rock series will be a gift from the rock-and-roll gods. Kiss is a logical entry point—it’s hard not to be intrigued by metal-studded, fake-blood-drooling rockers made up like evil clowns. Weintraub overuses subjective hyperbole but nevertheless compiles a highly readable history of this landmark outfit, beginning with their humble beginnings: Gene Simmons was born in Israel as Chaim Witz; Paul Stanley was a terrible student who loved art. Then comes their rocket to stardom with 1975’s Alive! and the on-the-road excesses that led to several band members getting the boot. Mostly this is a valuable record of musicians who were also marketing geniuses, able to get their faces on everything from magazine covers to toothbrushes. The cultural milestones (the Beatles, Watergate, Michael Jackson) that influenced Kiss’ fluctuating popularity are well covered. I'm shocked how my kids are really into my music. At first my kids started listening to a lot of classic rock, then they wanted to read about them and suddenly I got nervous. There's a lot of sex, drugs and rock & roll in the history of these bands and I don't want my 15 year old thinking that if he does drugs he'll be a rock star. I know that's a big jump, but I don't want to glorify it, or ignore it ever happened.

I've found a series of books that really covers the subject nicely. I bought the Kiss title and "Pink Floyd: The Rock Band" and they are equally great. I read both books before I gave them to my kids to read.

First off, even if you are fan of the bands you will find out cool information or remember things you forgot about them. Secondly they don't skirt the serious stuff. While they talk about how some band members remained drug free their whole careers, they discuss the other members who battle drug addicitions. They go into detail about all of the band members and discuss pivotal moments in their careers and lives. They discuss all of the members that have ever been in the band.

They don't ignore stuff, but don't glorify things either. It gives you a realistic impression of the band and their legacy. It also gets your kid away from watching reality TV and listen to Gene Simmons the way he should be heard!
