5.0 out of 5 stars Dumb Title, Good Book, May 22, 2010
This review is from: Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth (Paperback)
Ellie Phillips, DDS has written a book detailing the dental care regimen she recommends for her patients. Contrary to the eye catching title, she is not suggesting people stop seeing their dentist, but rather proposes a more preventative approach to keep dental problems to a minimum.

Her focus is on a series of rinses that adjust the mouth's chemistry, creating a healthier environment to facilitate the destruction of bad bacteria that cause plaque on teeth and contribute to gum disease, and encourage the growth of good bacteria that help bolster the natural rebuilding capabilities of our teeth.

Dr. Phillips explains why, although faithfully brushing and flossing, individuals may still have serious dental problems, but what is particularly helpful is her clear and non-technical explanations regarding why our current methods aren't working and why this system has good results. The book is actually interesting to read. There is a wealth of information for both adults and children along with some revealing material on the effect bleaching has on tooth health.

Trying the Dr. Phillips' system is not difficult or time consuming. The products are all available over the counter and on the internet with most being moderately priced. I am a cautious person and do not try every new fad that comes along, particularly when it comes to medical matters. I was interested in this book because I want to keep my teeth, not harm them. Dr. Phillips has been using this system for many years in her practice with success. What I read in her book makes sense to me, so I have started the program. It has been two weeks and entirely too soon to be reporting on my progress, but I can say my mouth has never felt cleaner.

I am not a dental professional or a chemist, and I haven't been using the system long enough to provide definitive proof of results, so this review isn't an endorsement of the Dr. Phillips process. That said, I am impressed enough to encourage anyone else interested in the subject matter, to read the book. I read it in one sitting and learned a great deal about teeth and gums. That information alone is valuable to me and made the book worth my time.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works!, April 8, 2010

Oh how I wish I had access to a book like this twenty years ago when my dental challenges first began! This book not only helped me understand the cause of my dental challenges, something no dentist has taken the time to do before now, but also gives a very easy to follow mouthcare system to prevent dental disease.

I didn't realize that our teeth are built to naturally repair themselves as long as the mouth chemistry is healthy - mine wasn't. I had a very acidic mouth. It took reading this book to help me realize that fact and understand this was the cause of my continued dental problems.

I've been on the mouthcare system for a few months now and can say that it works! My mouth feels healthy and I'm starting to see signs of improvement with my teeth and gums.

I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Sense and recommended products mostly less expensive here on Amazon, March 7, 2010

This review is from: Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth (Paperback)
Lots of good details on how acidity works in the mouth and overall dental and mouth chemistry is about 80% of the book. Her recommendations detailed in the end.

Is good reading to understand why she recommends the specific products she does. Her online site also sells but its common stuff and all can be purchased on Amazon at same price or less than her zellies site.

Amazon also has some of their products like the Listerine Pump same price.

My Dental Hygienist recommended Closys oral rinse years ago and have been using. But her combination with other products makes a lot of sense.

Closys available at many local drug stores and on her site. But on Amazon get 2 for the price of 1 on her site and most other places.

Is nice she doesn't have some secret ingredient you can only get from her but rather very common stuff, which enhances her creditability.

Have also researched her main ideas such as Xylitol and find plenty of back up support and not just from those trying to sell it. Just ordered Orahealth Xylimelts, 80-Count Boxes from here (Amazon) as well as Phyrion Diagnostic Ph Test Strips, 80ct -2

5.0 out of 5 stars an ounce of prevention beats a root canal!, July 16, 2010
This review is from: Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth (Paperback)
I picked up this book from the library yesterday. Read it cover to cover and just finished it. Photocopied several pages and took copious notes.

I was first introduced to tooth remineralization a few years ago by a lonely webpage which talked about the chemistry of the teeth, how enamal is continuously created, eaten away, and restored when your saliva is in an alkaline state and you are breathing. I experimented with sucking on magnesium tablets, calcium tablets, flouride rinses and found my teeth rejuvinating very quickly. I even managed to get a dental cary at the base of my gumline to go from black to white in a matter of days as new enamel formed over the old rot spot.

The author of this book does such an amazing job explaining the chemistry of teeth, analogizes the enamel to the toughness an eggshell, and talks about the dangerous practices people use on a regular basis thinking their helping but are in fact HURTING their teeth.

The program is simple, cheap and very easy to do. As soon as I get to the drugstore, I'll be picking up the things mentioned in the book, and I've already ordered some xylitol products via amazon.

I've got some nasty tooth work ahead of me, and I'm going to try to improve things to see if I can avoid the expensive procedures they have in store for me.

I'll let you know how it progresses.

This book is probably worth reading, depending on your situation, given the dearth of non ADA dental propaganda books. There is a lot of helpful info and some interesting ideas, especially if you are newly awakened. However, I have two criticisms.

First, the book could be more inclusive. Even though it was written subsequent to several years of blog Q&A, you really have to read most of the archives to really get some important points,(such as how Listerine's acid softens the teeth to enable flouride absorbtion) and this is very time consuming and should not be necessary. But heh, a minor complaint perhaps, nobody is perfect.

Secondly, I have had to conclude, after exchanging four letters with the author, that the foundation of this book is fantasy. Dr. Phillip's repeats endlessly that her system of mouthwashes, brush sterilization, and xylitol is very healing, but only if it is followed in the exact specified order and substitutions and "store brands" are omitted. Reasons are given, especially in the blog, and there is logic there. And you want to believe.
However, you are supposed to believe this because She claims to be a working dentist who has developed this system over many years of trials with patients, with whom she communed closely. Controlled studies are financially impossible, but she has this clinical observation to hold up. Sounded good enough to me.

However, it was unclear in both book and blog to what extent healing extends beyond the prevention level, as only inferences(abundant) are made. So I addressed her regarding four issues, bone loss, deep cavities(penetrate to dentin), deep gum pockets, and cracked teeth. First letter, 4/15/11 8:48 am. Question being to what extent, if any, she had noticed improvement or stabilization in these areas with her plan. Her answer to this very simple question was to talk around, address non existent questions, pretend not to understand, etc. Only first letter on blog, but in each subsequent letters I was even more blunt and simple and she more obfusecatory. Not asking for any exactness in numbers or guarantees. Like, in all your trials, have you ever noticed bone regrow? Common?, Uncommon?. So obviously, to me anyway, there were no trials, no rough hewn clinical observations in the trenches. All made up, to sell books and zellies, it can only be. Ask her yourself. Despite her strong claims, she really has no idea whether Closys rinse($14.00 every 3 weeks) is necessary or if it is important to avoid "store brand" listerine. Moreover if you follow this too blindly, like delaying certain treatments, serious harm could result. Parts of it work, though, like maybe the xylitol. My gums did get pinker. Get 15 lb. bags, a teaspoon, and rub it on your teeth with your tongue. Other points may have some validity. Still, on a human level, it's very dissapointing and sad. And she seemed so genuine. The age of smoke and mirrors we live in. Hope this helps people.

I have been doing this system for years and I can truly say that it is amazing! I have been compelled to tell everyone I know about Dr. Ellie's system. It is such a simple and obvious concept that always seems to be overlooked. I know so many people that go to the dentist and brush and gloss and feel like they are doing everything they possibly can yet still have oral problems. This book is the cure to those problems. I have several friends that had previous dental problems and after doing the system immediately starting seeing changes. The results are definitely worth it!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars It works!, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth (Paperback)
I learned some really interesting things from this, esp. as regards kids' teeth (for example, all kids' teeth are yellow and soft when they grow in--our dentist had led me to believe there was something very wrong with my eldest son's new teeth). After reading her book, I immediately began the program including clorsys but not using the xylitol (just made me too uncomfortable to take it on a daily basis). It definitely helps with minor gingivitis. When I was traveling (and not using it), the gingivitis came back, but another week of the system and it was gone again. She also explains why pregnant women have more dental problems and how it can contribute to premature birth. As a bit of a skeptic, I can safely say that I am a real believer in her system and have started it with my eldest child while his teeth grow in.

Here's the reason why I give the book 4 stars instead of 5: she dismisses concerns about using all these products over the long term and even advocates use of the xylitol in pregnant women. Now, in terms of preventing premature birth (because of gingivitis, etc) it might be worth it, but clearly the risk/advantages need to be weighed in these situations. Same with my kids--if they have real problems, I would use the xylitol for awhile, but would prefer to find less chemical-dependent solutions.

I read Nagel's book at the same time as hers, and his offers compelling information (based on Weston-Price) that good nutrition creates a healthy mouth. My own bottom-line--use the system to create a healthy mouth environment, but change one's nutrition over the long term to try to foster healthy teeth and gums without all the chemicals. Of course for the latter strategy, I will have to wait quite awhile before weighing in on whether it works. Certainly, it is wonderful to know that there is a system out there that really works quickly, albeit with the use of many chemicals.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book greatly improved my oral health, September 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth (Paperback)
This book greatly improved my oral health. The only part of it I have consistently put into effect (beside basic brushing and flossing, which I already was doing) is the use of xylitol 3-5 times daily for a total of around 8-10 grams, which I take as powder or crystals and dissolve in my mouth, swishing it around for as long as possible. After just a month or maybe less, I noticed a lot less tartar when I flossed and the white coating on the back of my tongue had disappeared. After four or five months, I found virtually no tartar when flossing and the dental hygienist found that my gum health was dramatically improved. I have also soaked my toothbrush in listerine a few times, and would like to work out a regular schedule for that to see if that helps further. I have misgivings about the use of Listerine and Act mouthwashes in my mouth, so I may not try that, but the xylitol alone has done wonders. By the way, most xylitol I have found is from China, and I have found variations in taste from container to container (including solvent-like overtones) even with brands that have good reputations. I found one company on Google making xylitol in the U.S. and I plan to try that very soon.
I also recommend this book for the author's more general discussion of oral health and her experience as a dentist in the U.K., Switzerland, and the U.S. It changed my sense of what is most basically involved in oral health. Yes, the author does recommend some of her own products (which I have not tried), but she also recommends products like Listerine and Act with which she appears to have no financial relationship, so I don't have a big problem with that.

As a holistic psychotherapist, I enthusiastically searched out and received training in different modalities and techniques to empower my patients in all areas of their life. So when I read the empowering dental health information on Dr. Ellie's website, I was very inspired; and after a year of following her protocol, I can enthusiastically testify to it's effectiveness. And now that I have read other important information in her new book, Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye, I feel compelled to urge everyone to read it. Dr. Ellie is one of those rare pioneering servants of humanity who has bravely challenged traditional beliefs with solid science. She has given us this tremendous gift of her life work. Her profound but simple oral healthcare protocol is easy-to-implement, will prevent pain and suffering, and save us money on dental bills.
