Some 10 million Americans use full-commission stockbrokers today--and most of them are overpaying for under performance, writes analyst John G. Wells in
Kiss Your Stockbroker Goodbye: A Guide to Independent Investing. However, Wells argues, a series of widely accessible alternatives now makes it easier to forego this always costly and often ineffectual investment route. He outlines the steps needed, and the resources available, to all investors who would rather serve as their own brokers.

Many people are taking an active role today in their retirement and financial planning. Wells, a certified financial analyst with his own asset-managing firm, provides an easy-to-follow regimen for do-it-yourself decisionmaking when investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. In addition, he lists extensive resources that provide information on each type of investment, along with recommendations for using fee-only financial planners, supporting his contention that the cost of a full-service broker can be avoided. However, he does articulate the services of such brokers as he compares them with the discount versions. Wells's timely book provides useful information and resources for both novice and experienced investors.?Steven J. Mayover, Free Lib. of Philadelphia
