The mysterious death of a Nigerian diplomat's son puts the FBI on alert, and they are eager to extinguish the rising political tensions. Fearing an international conspiracy, they call in Special Agent Kimberla Bacon to go undercover and solve the case. Code-named Chameleon for her ability to disguise and infiltrate, she is teamed up with another agent, Michael Latimer.
Kimberla is eager to take on the assignment and create some space between her and Jacob White, an agent with whom she shared a torrid love affair. Headstrong Kimberla feels uncertain about the future of their relationship and shields her vulnerable heart by immersing herself in the case. Meanwhile, there have been several more identical murders and the search for the killer leads Kimberla and her partner to Internet chat rooms where conversations about fantasy fulfillment and sexual seduction have them working overtime. The close bond that has formed between Kimberla and Michael leaves Jacob suspicious and consumed with jealousy, and he becomes desperate to win her back.
Jacob finds himself confused at the emotional distance Kimberla has put between them. Even though he has never had a shortage of female companions, the thought of the tantalizing and complex Kimberla not being at his side leaves him distraught and puzzled. As the pressure mounts to solve the case, rumors of an internal leak surface and the agents find that they themselves have become targets. Jacob and Kimberla realize they are caught in a deadly game of deception and hope they can outwit a killer in order to survive and give their love another try.
