Legends in the Making......, July 10, 2000

Right out of the blue collar wastelands of Ohio come this wonderful surprise onto the street scene: a superb, punk\Oi! band, that truly ranks alongside groups like Dropkick Murphys, Hudson Falcons, and Swingin Utters. Soundwise they stick pretty true to these groups, blasting out totally solid, singalong tunes, with gravelly vocals that interchange between two singers. One of them is a bit throatier and quite reminiscent of Jake Burns (SLF), while the other sings more from the chest, but they both sound a lot alike and make an excellent match. As for song diversity, they stick pretty true to their formula, but still cover the whole gamut of singalong Oi!, some faster, slightly California tinged pieces , street rock, and some good feeling, pub sounds like the Pogues. Lyrically they cover personal\friendship\life change topics, as well as some more sociopolitical tunes reminiscent of the previously mentioned Hudson Falcons, as well as Those Unknown. They also pack a lot of youthful idealism in their tunes, harkening back to The Jam or SLF. Many bands might come and go, along with many who lack real feeling; with The GC5 their passion is evident, and their sound in league with the top groups these days, ultimately best noted as Bombshell Rocks or Rancid meets Hudson Falcons. So killer musicians, inspired vocals, singalong choruses, and lyrics born out of obviously kind hearted guys. I feel confident The GC5 are assured a spot in history. Really, it doesn't get any better than this.........

I can't hear nothing but these songs..., May 9, 2002

I've been a streetpunk/Oi! fan for a while but I've been struggling to find a current band that I really enjoy...thank god for the GC5. These guys play punk rock along the lines of the Swingin' Utters, Dropkick Murphys (minus the idiotic lyrics and thinly veiled merchandising ploys), SLF, etc... Although the recordings on "Kisses from Hanoi" don't stack up to the band's live performances, it's hard to miss the target with this killer combination of songwriting and musicianship on display here...Who would of thought that the spirit of Jake Burns would be reborn into four young guys from Ohio...oh well, I'm not complaining.

punk is still alive in 2000!, August 31, 2000

i am a big fan of the "scene killer" comps from outsider records, and i kept hearing about a cd they put out by a band called GC5. then, a friend of mine saw this band live and told me to catch them at their next show, and that i did. it was so fun, i ended up buying the cd the next day. this has to be one of the best cd's i have heard this year, up there with the scene killers (part I & II, if those are still available, i suggest you buy those as well). i even bought a copy of this cd for my punk rock neighbor, who thought it was so great, he bought me and my boyfriend a round of drinks (isn't that beautiful?). buy it and love it or you will regret it....
