Cute, simple and fun.,

Kissing Snowflakes was an enjoyable winter romance read for teen girls. It's quick to get through and something that would be fun to read on a cold winter day with a cup of hot cocoa. I look forward to reading more from this author.

smart and funny,
By Ben H. Winters (Cambridge, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kissing Snowflakes (Paperback)
I'm a grown-up but an avid fiction reader, and I was delighted to find in this book for teenagers a sophisticated style and sense of humor. The characters are very real; the story is a classic girl-meets-boy but feels wholly original. The author has a depth of connection to her characters and her world that radiates from every page. Totally enjoyable. I loved reading it.

So good,

The main character, Sam Levy, felt like a good friend or someone I already know. She's smart, opinionated, flawed, thoughtful and funny! I was sad when the book was over because I wanted to spend more time with her.

KISSING SNOWFLAKES is a very quick and easy read. It is sure to entertain any reader. After her father marries a bubbly new wife, Samantha finds herself dragged to Vermont for winter break. As if her father's new marriage weren't enough to deal with, there was also the fact that she couldn't ski at all. So when she decides to take lessons one day, it doesn't hurt that her instructor, Drew, is a major hottie. And not only that, but he seems to have a special interest in Sam. But suddenly Drew doesn't seem so interested in Sam anymore. And what's with that guy Eric who seems to keep showing up? This novel is a very good read. The reader is taken to a world of winter wonderlands and holiday festivities. It's sure to leave all readers satisfied. Reviewed by: Steph

A Must Read,
By
This review is from: Kissing Snowflakes (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book. Written in first person narrative, it is the story of 15-year-old Samantha's winter break with her brother, father, and brand new step mom. Through fantastic inner monologue, we join Sam in dealing with resentment of her new family situation, social awkwardness, first real kiss, and decisions about drinking and sex.I'm an adult with no children and read young adult fiction regularly. The tone of the book is straightforward, not at all cutesy, patronizing, or shallow. kissing snowflakes is not oversimplified or heavy-handed; it is complex and raw but still lighthearted and fun, like every young woman I know...especially the one I carry with me every day.

Sweet and Fun,
By
This review is from: Kissing Snowflakes (Paperback)
It's winter break, and Samantha, Jeremy, her dad, and her new step-mom, Kathy are taking a vacation in Vermont. All Sam wants to do is relax and find a cute guy to kiss. But things are turning out so perfect. The inn they are staying at has no people that are her age with the exception of the owner's strange son Eric. Her brother is immature, her best friend Phoebe is acting strange and distant, and she and Kathy can't manage to get along. It seems that Sam will have to spend winter break sulking in her room with only her books and cards for company. When she does decide to venture outside and join a skiing class, she meets Drew, a blond skier who brags he's been to the Olympic Trials. Sam's first impression is that he looks like a Ken doll and that he is way out of her league, but she soon finds out he's more than interested in her. After some very excellent kissing, she realizes what a jerk he is because he only wants to get into her pants. Through the course of her very short relationship with Drew, she makes friends with Liz, Heidi, and Deana. She also befriends a girl from Texas named Ashley whose favorite phrase is "tote hilare". After running into Eric, the inn keeper's son, several times, she realizes that she really likes him, and things go on from there. I really enjoyed reading this book. I was glad it wasn't completely a romance novel, but I was disappointed that Sam and her friend, Phoebe didn't make up their friendship by the end of the story, but it's refreshing that everything doesn't turn out perfectly. I was also glad that Sam was able to figure out what she wanted in her life. The cover is really cute too! This book is perfect for reading by the fire in the dead of winter. I recommend this book for fans of the Summer Boys series by Hailey Abbott because it's basically the same idea in the opposite season. [...]

Great read,

Honest, well-written, enjoyable. Ms. Sher captures the feelings of a teen girl without being condescending or obvious, which makes this a wonderful read- even if you're not a teen. I hope this author writes more!

Parents Beware,
By
This review is from: Kissing Snowflakes (Paperback)
This novel is overall a good story that addresses sends a message to teenage girls not to be pressured into sex. However, parents beware that it does address sexual issues (the heroine does choose not to have sex - good message). It also has several scenes where young teens drink alcohol.

Ehh, alright.,

2.5/5I also read this a while ago, but it was just alright. Nothing spectacular, and it definitely could have been better. It's about Sam, a girl who is being dragged with her father, new step-mother, and brother to a ski lodge. She doesn't like her step-mother and doesn't want to be out in the snow. She meets a boy Drew, and fools around with him some, while a different boy, Eric (obviously the better one), is also at the lodge. Sam was okay. I didn't not like her, but she didn't particularly stick out to me either. She wasn't the smartest girl out there, though. She could have been more open to her step-mother, and should have seen earlier than she did that Eric was better than Drew. (So much wasted time on him.) But even when she does finally get to Eric, it's mostly just okay. A little flat, and not as fun as I'd been hoping for with all the wait with Drew. I just didn't feel a lot for this book. Most of it was okay, and the romance wasn't as good as it could have been. Plus, I don't really know where they're supposed to go from there, how things are going to work out past the sky lodge. They like each other, but it wasn't all that steamy or romantic. The book overall wasn't all that exciting, either, though. There just wasn't enough for me. I still get the image of the kissing snowflakes scene between her and her step-mother in my head every once in a while, though. So there's that. Well, that and the dragging on with Drew, and her holding hands with Eric in the woods near the end, is mostly what sticks out in my head. None of the scenes are particularly good things about the book, but still.

Great love story,
This review is from: Kissing Snowflakes (Paperback)
It's your typical romance novel - girl meets boy, girl ignores boy and goes after another boy, etc. But this was definitely one I enjoyed reading. Of course it's July, but I did love reading it pool-side for those bitter cold nights shared at the Inn in Vermont. Definitely recommend this book!
