5.0 out of 5 stars cut above usual romances & with substance
I was getting bored with the usual romances and needed to read one that had substance. I have read everything by my favorite authors (Laura Kinsale, Megan Chance, Linda Howard, Loretta Chase, etc) and can only wait for their new books. This was the refreshing answer. The characters are witty, intelligent and unique. She's an adventuress by necessity and he has to live...

2.0 out of 5 stars Heroine was very annoying
This book left me feeling blah. If Lavinia had lied or deceived Garrick one more time I would have thrown the book out the window. At the end I was left feeling as though there was no way that she could ever redeem herself and that she definitely did not deserve the hero.

The rich details of the Isle of Man, horse racing and gambling reflect the author's good research. All around a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Charming!, January 4, 1999

I truly enjoyed this book--it had a good plot charming characters and a sweet love story. The hero Garrick, was handsome, sexy and thoughtful. I was afraid that Lavinia was going to be another beautiful young and brainless girl (entirely too innocent and naive) but she evolved into a wonderful heroine--smart, strong with an inate goodness. I liked them--they were likable. There were things that Garrick did in the story which endeared me to him.

This book is extremlely good. I enjoy Regency and feel fortunate to have discosvered Margaret Evans Porter.

I recommend "Road to Ruin", one of her earlier works. It does not have a passionate scene but it has a terrific plot that pulls a little on your heart strings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kudos to author for taking chances, April 29, 2000
This review is from: Kissing a Stranger (Mass Market Paperback)
This is not your typical romance. The historical details are well-researched and pertinent to the story. The characters -- especially the heroine -- don't always do the right thing.

However, several things kept me from loving it. One was the separation between the hero and heroine. Also, I was annoyed with the heroine from keeping important information from the hero, and for some of her truly deceptive actions near the end of the book. In addition, some of the subplots detracted from the story.

Still, I am going to read this author's next book -- because she has the guts to do something different.

I gave this book a C- at All About Romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Porter delivers an entertaining Regency romance, October 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Kissing a Stranger (Mass Market Paperback)
~<p~ to be his forever and plans to insure that occurs. As love starts to blossom between the twosome, reality remains a harsh mistress. No permanent relationship can occur in light of the fact that her father is heading towards debtor prison and pounds to keep her sire free are remorsefully more vital to Lavinia than love. Still, Garrick has a scheme that he feels will trump Lavinia's plots to land an opulent aristocrat. His plan begins innocently with a kiss. <p~ is a diverting early regency romance that includes wonderful lead characters who charm the audience as love struggles to triumph over convenience. The support cast adds reality, especially the treatment received by Garrick and Lavinia's father from the Ton. The main story line is lighthearted, well designed, and fun to peruse, but a couple of sub plots causes unnecessary diversions. Margaret Evans Porter scribes an entertaining tale that will please sub-genre fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars An endearing and believable story, February 19, 2002

This review is from: Kissing a Stranger (Mass Market Paperback)
I just finished this book and I must say it was an immense joy to read. The rating it TRULY needs is more like 4.5 stars.
I enjoyed it mostly because the plot was most realistic and it was possible to happen not only that but the characters themselves were well developed with a three deminsional history to go with them. This is the best choice of Evans Porter books to read if this is your first of this author.
The only thing that I felt was lacking was the ending. (Chapter 29 prior to epilogue) The story was well developed and the ending was good, but when I got to the last page, it seemed that it needed the slightest kick to give it more power.

This was a good read. Two likable characters, one great romance. At first, I was afraid that this was another book with a naive and slightly stupid woman, but she wasn't. Garrick was very sweet and he did somethings that would endear any woman.

I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Porter delivers an entertaining Regency romance, October 23, 1998

In 1793 England, Lady Lavinia Cashin is depressed because she always dreamed that she would marry for love. However, her destitute family desperately needs an infusion of cash so, accompanied by her father, she sets her sights on landing a wealthy husband.

Lord Garrick Armitage is a scandalous rake, known for his gambling and womanizing. Polite Society refuses to accept the second son of a nobleman, especially since his lineage is in question. However, Garrick wants Lavinia to be his forever and plans to insure that occurs. As love starts to blossom between the twosome, reality remains a harsh mistress. No permanent relationship can occur in light of the fact that her father is heading towards debtor prison and pounds to keep her sire free are remorsefully more vital to Lavinia than love.
