Jane Rocks!,
By Daniel James Thome (Comstock Park, Michigan USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kissproof World (Audio CD)
This is the best of all Jane's cd's. Her writing has only improved over the years and her talent shines on her latest recording. There are a couple songs, "Icicle" and "Feeling Like Flying" that were co-written with Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go's. If this is an insight to the direction of the Go-Go's new album, they will have no problem competing with today's alternative bands. The guitars and overall recording have the driving punk-edge which come from her L.A. roots. Other favorites are "Die Now! Pay Later!", "My Lovely Revenge" and "Drain". Since her writings focus a lot on relationships, this sets her apart from a lot of the current musicians on the charts. This gives the album more content than the top teeny-bop, cookie-cutter music that's infested radio. A DEFINATE must-have. Not only of Jane or Go-Go's fans, but of fans of quality rock-n-roll. You won't be disappointed!!!

This is the only CD I have heard from Jane Wieldin's solo efforts and personally I think that its a great CD. I like every song on the album and I think she did a marvelous job. In some ways she sings just as well as Belinda Carlisle. Until I stumbled accross this CD I was only familiar with her involvement with the GO GO's and I have always enjoyed their music. I really wanted to give this CD a spin and purchased it used from amazon. It is definately worth a listen. Unlike a lot of the other reviewers I think that she put a lot of thought into her songs and she has a good singing voice. In my opinion, I think this CD is evidence that she is just as talented as her colleague Ms. Carlisle. If you like the Go GO's, then I think that you will enjoy this CD, because it is similar in many ways. The songs are pleasant to listen to and the tunes are very catchy. I highly recommend this CD and intend to check out some of her other solo material.

A CD Salvo of Rock 'n Roll Cruise Missles,

I was never a great fan of The Go-Go's. Their music always seemed a bit too perky for me, a little too upbeat and almost premeditatedly catchy. At the same time, I always had some idea that Jane Wiedlin, one of the creative forces of that "Girl Group", had other directions in which to "go-go" if it were ever possible for her to do so. Recently I heard excerpts from "Kissproof World" and promptly purchased the CD. It may yet provide evidence that these discs are not indestructable, that they CAN be worn out with repeated playing. These songs are an amazing combination of genuine, drive-with-the-top-down rock 'n roll, and remarkably compelling lyrics. Every one of these compositions lauches off of the disc and cuts directly to its target, propelled by Jane's voice, her superb skills with a Gibson guitar, a strong beat, and extraordinary arrangements. This is 21st Century Rock. There are only two major exceptions to this musical pattern. When those songs spin, the beat slows and the voice softens, but the music remains on course, and carries an impact as great as anything else on the album. In "The Good Wife" we hear a woman sing, with brutal honesty, of her own failures as a spouse. In "He's Not Talking" Wiedlin offers a soft, simple, but achingly moving performance that will resonate with every man who has ever felt the need to retreat within himself and every woman who has been unable to reach him when he has drawn inside. It is a song that is both a narrative and a warning. It is also the only song on this CD for which I have found myself frequently using the "skip" button on the CD player. It is a beautiful song. It is a remarkable song. It can just be too painful to hear.

Kissproof Kool!,

Jane Wiedlin has always worn her heart on her musical sleeve, and KISSPROOF WORLD is no exception. The difference between this album and some of Wiedlin's earlier efforts is that KISSPROOF WORLD has a harder edge and seems to exhibit a lyrical and rythmic maturity in the once and again Go-Go."Icicle" and "Die Now, Pay Later" are classics, and alone are worth the cover price. Sadly, many folks not enraptured by the Go-Go's will probably overlook KISSPROOF WORLD, and consequently miss a gem.

Ms. Wiedlin has penned an absolute post break-up classic. Heart breaking, insightful, and bitter with rocking guitars, this is a buried treasure.

Like Jane Wiedlin but never really that impressed with Fur or Tangled? Kissproof World may be more of what you are looking for from this tiny voiced ex-Go-Go. A much more satisfying effort this time around, Wiedlin seems to have found her place away from Go-Go land...but not too far. Definitely has a similar feel, but there's more growth here as a solo act than with her earlier efforts. Notables include "Die Now! Pay Later!", "My Lovely Revenge", and "Be My Muse". Perhaps the best track on the whole thing is "Sooner or Later". The tunes are catchy, and that's not a bad thing considering the clog of Rap and moaning ballads on the radio today. Jane Wiedlin will never be mainstream or get the radio play that some of these songs may deserve, but she does serve up a refreshing treat.

I have always been a major Go-Go's fan, so it only makes sense that I am a major fan of Jane Wiedlin's solo career too! I loved her albums "Fur" and "Tangled", with "Fur" being my favorite. One of my favorite Jane Wiedlin songs of all time is "Inside A Dream".
Jane is an extremely talented musician and song writer. She writes songs that you enjoy listening to, and the lyrics really hit home. With the music, lyrics, and Jane's voice -- you just can't go wrong!! Once I heard some of the clips from "Kissproof World", I HAD to have the CD! Jane really rocks on this CD! I love the lyrics because they really tell how life is, and you can relate to what the songs say. I think the best songs are "Feeling Like Flying", "Kissproof World", "Messy", "Icicle", and "The Good Wife". This whole CD is great! I highly recommend it to everyone!

Jane Wiedlin returns with a real downer!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kissproof World (Audio CD)
With a career spanning over 25 years, Jane Wiedlin has established herself as a unique and very talented songwriter. She has co-written several top 40 hits as a member of the Go-Go's and as a solo artist. She also helped to deliver a #1 country song for Keith Urban - "but for the grace of god". Even with such substantial credentials Jane as a solo artist remains "lost" somewhere between potential commercial success and oblivion.
Those hoping to find Jane returning with her trademark clever, fun, lyrically bitter-sweet pop sensibilities may be somewhat disappointed with Kissproof World. Most of the songs on this release are autobiographical, conveying a bleak message that may not please fans accustomed to hearing a more positive approach. Obviously life's bitter struggles and a failed marriage have taken their toll on Jane as a musician and songwriter. Lyrically, Jane finds herself in "Aimee Mann" territory but fails to deliver the same complex and pleasing song structures that Aimee has perfected. The problem here seems to be that Jane's unhappiness and personal realizations seem to have put the damper on her creative abilities. It's actually a sad experience to witness Jane "giving up" within her lyrics where she had always made a personal "stand" in the past. You won't find a lot of hope here, only disillusionment with life, love, and ones own identity. After her outstanding but commercially unsuccessful release "Tangled" (1990) Jane formed a group named "froSTed" and delivered an uneven and poorly written self-titled "punk/grunge" effort in 1996. Perhaps that can now be seen as an indication of the turmoil in her personal life and also as a warning sign announcing the soon to arrive "Kissproof World". Although uneven and certainly not up to par with her previous solo releases, "Kissproof World" isn't a complete failure. "The Good Wife" is a very strong effort and is the "heart" of this release. "Kissproof World" is an excellent song and is one of the only tracks that can be considered "positive" in a cynical kind of way. This CD is certainly worth owning for a fan of Jane Wiedlin, just be prepared for a real "downer", a few duds, and lyrics that don't always measure up.

Starting over...,

Kissproof World is JW's most entertaining cd to date and a radical departure from her HORRIBLE 80's solo efforts. Gone is the intrusive sugar coated production of her past efforts which induced vomiting when coupled with sickly sweet by-the-numbers lyrics (Think FUR). Without a major label, Wiedlin finally sings/performs with some honesty and integrity. Give me "Die Now Pay Later" and "Good Wife" over "Rush Hour" or "Blue Kiss" any day. If you like this, check out her FroSTed CD which is a cross between the Go-Go's and Green Day. |
