Editorial Reviews

Review

"Liberally laced with humor and nostalgia, the author commingles recipes along with her city/country musings on life, love, family and food. The recipes, which range from potato soup with parsley dumplings to raspberry bread pudding, and snail butter (a snail-less mushroom stuffing) to icy white gazpacho (a soup or sauce), are accompanied by witty illustrations by her husband, Nicholas Verni. Verni pokes fun at dining situations and suggests simple ways to perk up common dinners" -- Kaatskill Life, Winter 98-99

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern & nostalgic trip = all at the same time, May 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Kitchen Chronicles (Paperback)
A warm and nostalgic trip through a woman's life - with excellent recipes that bring back the feelings of comfort and a life lived with joy...I loved the book and the recipes.....Have given the book to a lot of family & friends. My mother-in-law who lives in Australia and was born in New Zealand, said it was reminiscent of her life as well and that the recipes were great...

This book has nothing but delicious recipes! I've made quite a few and found them all to be quite good. There is a story in this book about Ellen Verni's family and her opinions on many different things which give you a laugh and take you back in time. The recipes are easy to read and easy to make and are all mouth watering. You'd definitly keep going back to make more and remake the one's you've come to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Mother Loves It, May 30, 2001

Noodlehead (Mountains of NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Kitchen Chronicles (Paperback)
My mother is 85 years old. She is Italian. She has been cooking just about all her life (good stuff). I gave her a copy of the book. She called me to say it is wonderful and she wanted to buy a few copies to give as gifts.

She liked the content - the recipies; she loved the stories which set the stage for and support the recipies; and she laughed out loud at the illustrations.

I don't cook. But I loved reading the book.
