You won't find two better books, I bought them having read The Kitchen many years ago, the bonus was The Cook. ANYONE interested in real cooking should read them both.

Nicholas Freeling writes about life in the kitchen years ago, before my time as a cook. . . but I guess some things never change. He is entertaining and easy to read. I am still in the process of reading this book but am enjoying every minute of it.
