Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Part 1 of this informative book focuses on growing 18 kinds of vegetables, with basic instructions on preparing the soil and making compost. Part 2 gives instructions on growing a variety of fruits, with tips on planting, stakings, training, pest control, and storing fruits. Part 3 concerns growing herbs, with information on which ones will prosper in sunny places and which will do better in the shade. Ways to propagate, freeze, and dry are also explained. Part 4 presents ways to add color to the kitchen garden by using flowers--annuals, perennials, and spring and summer bulbs--among the fruits and vegetables. More than 200 step-by-step color photographs, along with instructions on choosing, planting, and maintaining a kitchen garden, make this an ideal book for beginners. George Cohen

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Herb Resource, July 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kitchen Garden (Hardcover)
I first found this excellent resource at our local library, and it was far and away my favorite basic resource for starting our greenhouse and kitchen garden items. The title is spot on, and if you love cooking, this is the book you need to begin using fresh herbs and making the process easy and fun. The writers are matter-of-fact, enjoyable to read, and they take pains to explain very basic things without making the reader feel foolish. They also go to great lengths to recommend a variety of more advanced strategies and suggest other resources, too. Intelligent, aimed at a natural approach without fanaticism or extreme measures, it is a great family favorite now. I bought two as gifts, for my daughter and for a friend! I may need to buy others for my friends who aspire toward gourmet quality cooking!
