4.0 out of 5 stars yummy romp through the not so supernatural
I picked up this book thinking it had a little flair of supernatural. I was wrong but still wasn't dissapointed. It turned out to be a sweet and funny story about a woman taking advantage of her reputation as a witch, a very sweet little boy, and his dad who just now gets to be with his son.
I liked the idea of the TV show and the sparks flying between our "witch"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute fluff, May 25, 2005
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was annoyed at the beginning of this novel. It starts with a drop-dead gorgeous but unemployed woman, Melody, using her sex appeal to manipulate her way into a starring role on a cooking show. Never mind that she can't cook.

From there, however, it becomes a cute, lightweight romance that isn't bad at all. Melody matures a great deal throughout the book, becoming more mature and responsible while retaining her spunk and spirit. The male lead, Logan, becomes more annoying as Melody becomes less so. He's looking for a woman who can be a good mother to his son, ignoring his feelings for Melody and the constant proof the she's great with kids--from her adorable bonding with Logan's son to her rescuing abandoned kittens--because he has the idea that only a staid, conventional woman could make a good mother. The rest of the novel is devoted to finding out whether Logan will ever wise up.

I did hope there would be a little more *witchcraft* in this book! If it's going to be titled "The Kitchen Witch", and star a witch and a man who's a little afraid of witches, and be set in Salem--I want a little more magic than, say, a red candle getting lit when the characters are about to get it on. I don't like novels that read like Witchcraft 101 primers--but this goes too far in the other direction. The story could have been better either by dropping the witch angle entirely or by having more fun with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars magical and moronic all rolled into one..., November 3, 2005
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
this book is unusual that I found myself liking it one minute and dispising it the next. While it had it's moments of cleverness, it seemed equally filled with sophmoric "harlequin" like drivel.

I agree with the other reviewers-the love scenes were 1-way to many "pri*k tease", almost-had-sex scenes, and 2-all were strictly sex scenes, there was no love to these scenes, more "horny teenager" type of sex that seemed played more for titilation than romance. Explicitness in romances is fine, IMO, but as long as there is some emotion behind the motion:)

The good points-1-several fun and well written minor characters, especially Logan's son Shane. 2-the two characters do show some maturation and growth-but that and their realization of their love came sadly, to late in the book to make it enjoyable, more like a niggling suspecion of time wasted:(.

5 stars for a great cover, 4 for an interesting premise but sadly a 2 on actual story. Altogether-3.5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ok, if you're twelve or have never read a book before, April 28, 2009
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a really terrible book. When Amazon recommended it to me I thought it was a crime book or a book about witchcraft - I like those. This is a terrible romance chicklit rubbish (I also like some of those but this is awful). It mainly focuses on the main characters ERECTIONS which are very frequent and describtions of his "THICKNESS????". The sex scenes are unbelievable (at least to those who have actually had sex) and the main characters are flat and empty (except for the kid, who at age four is surely a child wonder as he takes active part in adult life and conversations, am guessing the author never met a four year old). Also the characters are supposed to have "baggage" and a "past" but really their lives have been rather uneventful so you don't get what the fuss is about. AVOID - Please!

Ps. I really wanted to like this - so against better judgement I read it through waiting for it to get better - it didn't!

1.0 out of 5 stars Wretched, Not Wicked, April 27, 2005
By
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book has great cover art and terrific marketing behind it. And trust me, that's all it has.

Here's the whole book: two very attractive people spend hundreds of pages ALMOST having sex. Can you guess the climax of the plot? It doesn't really matter, because you won't care by the time it rolls around.

The writing is execrable. The barely-there plot is completely predictable. The characters are one-dimensional. Gigantic passages are devoted to explicit descriptions of the characters' sexual antics, but they're not even erotic.

This book is being aggressively marketed, but I can't explain why. Please don't waste your money on it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring, August 17, 2008

This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ok, first of all: I hate when the titel of a book is misleading! If the book titel has the word 'witch' in it I kind of assume it's a paranormal and it is - well duh - about a witch. Somehow this book ends up with no witchcraft in it at all Melody, the heroine, was accused to be a witch (not even seriously) and just went along with it and kind of pretends to be one to get a job as a cook on tv I guess in order to spice up the plot Annette Blair made Mel a complete failure in the kitchen (ha ha ha funny - NOT).

Logan, the hero, is a former Bad Boy who knocked up a girl, she disappeared with her sugar daddy, and four years later - after he got his life in order - he finally gets custody of his son. He moves back to his home town Salem, gets an apartment in the same house as Melody and she starts baby sitting for him. As a thank you Logan checks if he can get Melody a job at the tv station he works at and that's how she gets the job as cook. They are attracted to each other but Logan thinks that Melody is just another dits like his ex who uses her looks and sex to get a career. Melody thinks Logan is an uptight guy in a suit without a wild side.

I thought the book and the whole story had potential but somehow it turned out to be totally boring and a torture to read Usually in third person novels you switch from the hero/heroine point of view and you are kind of 'in their head'. You know why they react in a certain way, you know what they think and you really get to know them. In this book I never had the feeling like I was inside of the hero or the heroine.
Like usually the hero gets mad and you get a full length explanation why he is pissed and how it makes him feel. In this book you got "Logan is mad" and that's it. WTH? Anyway, I never got the hero or the heroine, I never felt like I knew them and because of that I didn't care for either one of them.

I would give the book 1 1/2 stars...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great premise that never went anywhere, February 17, 2008
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really wanted to like this book. The premise is great and the opening drew me in, but after that, it fell flat. Logan and Melody don't seem very well fleshed out and I never understand them. The writing is entertaining, but I never really cared about the characters and had to struggle to finish.

Another thing I thought was odd - there is no witch or witchcraft in this book. Because of the title, I expected a fun story about a witch. But Melody just pretends, which was kind of like my impression of the entire book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't find the story past the sex, September 1, 2007
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought the premise of this book was great but I was so disappointed. It is one a the few books I threw out. I tried and I tried but I got disgusted with the sex. Give me the story with the sex thrown in, but this guy's every thought in the book was sexual. It was too much for me and I moved on.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Love the Book's Cover Art ... and That's about It, Sadly, April 16, 2005

This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
THE KITCHEN WITCH by Annette Blair is okay reading. To summarize, it's a story about the relationship between TV producer and single dad Logan and his accident-prone, yet sexy neighbor Melody, who becomes the star of his TV show, "The Kitchen Witch." Only, Melody can't cook ... but she does have pointy witch hats. I purchased the book because I thought it might have magical moments, but the witch stuff is used more as a gimmick for the TV show than anything else. I also thought the story dragged a bit (it took me a week to read it, when I usually devour a book this size in 4 or 5 hours). Why? Well, for one, the cheeky writing style and glaring typos were a distraction. Two, I got tired of Logan and Melody holding out from hooking up when there was no reason for them not to hook up. The excuse was he needed stability and she was the anti-thesis of stability, yet everything they did together was perfect and peachy-keen, until somebody else interrupted. I don't know - I just didn't see the conflict in that. Even when Logan began "dating" another woman, you knew there was no need to worry, because the other woman was so awful, there was no suspense in wondering if Melody really had competition for Logan's affections. Anyway, as I said, it's an alright story. Predictable and cute, with a cherry on top. But probably not something I'd read again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute but no magic, June 28, 2006
By
This review is from: The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm a sucker for a wacky, funfilled romance. This was close enough for government work - I'd give it 2 1/2 stars. But I cannot tell you how annoyed I was to find out that there is NO ACTUAL MAGIC in this book (a la Mary Janice Davidson). It's NOT a paranormal. No matter what the title and description insinuate, Melody is NOT a witch. She's just a girl who dresses like a witch as a gimmick for her cooking show because she lives in Salem (in fact, the misleading advertising is what dropped this from a 3 to a 2 when I had to choose). Other than that, it's cute and fast enough for a beach read, but the characters are a bit shallow and rather irritatingly un-self-aware, and the ending is a little trite. Not the worst book I've read by any stretch of the imagination, good enough that I'll probably give Blair another shot, but I can't recommend it without a lot of warning.

4.0 out of 5 stars yummy romp through the not so supernatural, February 11, 2007

I liked the idea of the TV show and the sparks flying between our "witch" Melody and new father Logan. The intimate scenes are not sugarcoated with pretty words, but there aren't too many of them and they don't last long. So if that normally bothers you it doesn't play that large of a role here. I also found the other woman vying for Logan and the situations that came up with her pretty unbelievable...one minute something huge happens and then the consequences are not mentioned for many many days. I still would reccommend this story- just remember to suspend your disbelief during those scenes. This story is wonderful girly fluff and I have gone back for seconds.
