Never in my life have I ever taken an instant dislike to a household appliance. The mechanical timer ticker is loud. Incredibly so (I am so not kidding. This is my main complaint). This doesn't so much toast as make bread stale to the core, then burn it. The heating elements take a very, very long time to heat up. Then, in a 15 second window the bread goes from dried to the core to burnt, which sets off the smoke alarm. Every time. It is solid, well made, the door doesn't squeek, and is NOT attached to the grill (unlike other designs!). It will probably do a wonderful job of baking, broiling, or heating. However, a toaster OVEN is what we wanted. It is also NOT going to stay here, and IS going into its' box and BACK to the store where we bought it.

I replaced a twice as expensive Krups which didn't toast the bottom of the bread as much as the top and for many other reasons.

This oven makes great toast as long as you remember to use the bottom most shelf for it as it says in the manual. It is impossible to burn toast this way even when the dial is moved to the Dark position. If you use the top shelf for toast, it will burn.

It also crisps home breaded foods as good as any other oven can, using the included pan on the middle shelf. And it does so very evenly with no hot spots. Hopefully, this will not change as I continue to use the oven.

The very top shelf is used only for broiling which I have not tried as yet.

I appreciate that each of the four heating elements has a stainless perforated covering which disperses the heat evenly throughout the interior.

Toast comes out as a cross between baked and toast, still crisp on the outside and soft inside. A bit different from a regular toaster but I'm beginning to prefer it this way. And very evenly crisp side to side and top and bottom.

The "loud" clicking of the timer does not bother me, and, in fact, I enjoy listening to it. It is very retro like the clicking of a typewriter was or a rotary dial tone. I guess that you need to be old enough to have experienced these other products.I actually turned on all of the timers on the other floor models in the store and preferred this steady tick to the hyper but quieter clicks of the other brands of toaster ovens.

I paid $80 for this unit so the current price is a bargain.

Why not 5 stars? Well, the lettering on the dials is very hard to read. But when the dial is straight up/down, it is Bake or Toast. So I used a magic marker to make a B and a T on the dial so it is now very easy to tell when it is in each position.

Highly recommended.

This is the first KitchenAid product I have purchased that I would NOT recommend. The oven door does not open completely flat. Hard to get anything out without burning yourself on the upper element.

Owning this appliance has been like being in an abusive relationship with a good-looking a-hole. My husband gave it to me for X-mas (I know, right!? He's getting a Mr. Coffee for his birthday!) to replace our skanky old Krups toaster oven. The krups took up about 1/2 the space and lasted for like 8 years but we all know how bad toaster ovens can end up looking. What's the one thing a toaster oven should be able to get right? TOAST! Reading the reviews of Kitchenaid toaster ovens has been therapeutic because I thought I was going crazy. What kind of toaster needs 10 minutes to warm up before it can make toast? That's nuts! But all of our other big appliances are kitchenaid and we love them so it seemed like a sensible choice. So it can't make toast, we all know that by now. This is why they don't call it a toaster oven. So I tried to grill up some chicken in it. After about 20 minutes on "broil" I realized that I wasn't cooking the chicken so much as abusing it. It was slowly turning greyish and dry. I eventually had to move it to my big oven and grill it up right.

So you can't make toast and you can't grill chicken. What can you do? Oh, that's right - you can burn my hand! This lame contraption has a metal strip across the top polka-dotted with holes undoubtedly for heat distribution. But it's placed right where your hand would be if you were taking out a piece of say, toast. Like we all do with toaster ovens. Look at the thing and you'll get an idea of the pattern that grilled onto the top of my hand when it lightly bumped against it a few months ago. Instant 3rd degree burn. Now I have a nice big scar on the top of my hand. I would have emailed the photo of the ugly wound to the company but they only allow you to contact them via an online form.

I have never written a review of anything online but this appliance was so terrible that I felt compelled. The biggest problem with this toaster oven is that it doesn't toast. But that is not the most annoying feature...the ticking of the timer is enough to make you develop a nervous twitch. After 2 weeks of eating warm bread (not toast) and hearing that damn ticking I packed it back in the box and returned it to the store. DON'T BUY THIS product. Kitchenaid should be ashamed.

I bought this to replace a Krups toaster oven which I had for years and years and years. The biggest problem I have with this is that one cannot just simply turn it off, one MUST use the timer. I find this to be a nuisance. Sometimes I just want to heat something up or cook 'til brown' and I don't want to HAVE to use the timer to do so. It is wasted energy if the food is finished earlier than I have set the timer for and I don't want to have to unplug it every single time to stop the heating element from working (as the timer will still go on until finished even if unplugged and no, you can't just turn the timer backwards to 0 it won't let you) and a pain in the neck to have to keep setting the timer if I'm not sure of the timing, wait for it to heat up and... Otherwise, it is a sturdy unit and I suppose it does what it is meant to do. And considering the timer is independent of the unit as far as how it works, I suppose one could use the timer for something else as well but that's not why I bought it, I bought it to make things easier, not more difficult as the outlet in my kitchen where I would plug this in is a bit difficult to reach. I have this in black but I'm not sure for how long, I think it's going back.
