Good for ceramic cooktop with bridge burner,
By Careful shopper (Concord, MA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: KitchenAid Hard-Base Porcelain Aluminum Nonstick 18-by-10-Inch Two-Burner Griddle, Red (Kitchen)
I looked long and hard for a double griddle for my new GE ceramic cooktop range with a bridge burner. This one works great for pancakes. It's really well made, perfectly flat on the bottom and easy to clean up. The 10 X 18 size is the largest compatible with my 8" diameter burners.
The packaging doesn't indicate that it is ceramic cooktop compatible, so I called Kitchenaid support. At first I was told it is not compatible and the porcelain bottom might accidentally fuse to the cooktop. I was frustrated because the other double griddles I had bought were too big or not perfectly flat on the bottom even when they looked flat. I tested for flatness by placing the griddle on the cooktop and alternately pushing on opposite corners with my fingers. This one had no wobble. I called GE trying to figure out which of the flaws was the least problem. Porcelain is okay as long as you don't leave it on a hot burner with nothing in the pan. Too large a pan has the greatest risk of cracking and damaging the cooktop. I really wanted to keep the Kitchenaid griddle and called Kitchenaid support again. This time I was told this griddle is okay on ceramic tops AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A BRIDGE BURNER! I kept this griddle and have used it for pancakes, french toast and sausages. I love it. I use it at a heat setting of 6 out of 10 or lower ( 4 to 5 is better for pancakes and French toast.). It browns evenly and is easy to clean up. I will not use it at high temperatures or for steaks or hamburgers because of the concern of getting the porcelain coating too hot. I wait for it to completely cool before washing to prevent it from warping. If only Kitchenaid made one that is hard-anodized aluminum on the bottom, then I could be sure it is safe for high heat, too.

The KitchenAid Griddle stays flat when the burners are at different heat settings. The silicone handles stay cool even when using a high heat setting. The non-stick surface is not as easy-release during clean up as some I have had, perhaps that's a trade off for longevity. Cooking release is very good: I often cook eggs dry with little problem turning them.
I was considering the much more expensive models but I am happy with this KitchenAid Griddle.

I love, love, love this griddle. I wish I had time to use it more. Cooks pancakes beautifully and I imagine eggs, bacon, etc just as well. The red looks so nice in my kitchen and the handles with the soft, rubber make it easy to hold, pic up, use, etc. Easy, quick clean up, and it's storable, yet very hefty in it's weight so you know it's quality. DEFINATELY RECOMMENDED!

I'd been waiting on adding this peice to my current red set, then the price dropped and I ordered one. Love it! It hasn't left my stovetop yet, every morning it gets used. I can fix the entire breakfast on it and I love the deep sides and the small dip in the corner to drain off grease. Well done, kitchenaid!

i've been wanting a 2-burner griddle and have been researching on what's available. i decided on this cause not only is Kitchen Aid a reputable brand, it was an excellent price! I'm so happy with this product, it made several perfect pancakes at once with its even heat distribution, and perfect bacon too! plus, cleaning it was a breeze. forget heavy cast-iron or other expensive griddles. you can't go wrong with this one. and the red colour is so funky and attractive!

When I purchased my new glass stovetop, I was thrilled to see it has a "bridge" option that allows me to combine two burners.
I bought this two-burner griddle to make pancakes. I also used it for stuffed boneless chicken breasts, which I brown on the stove and then finish off in the oven. For both uses, the griddle was perfect. It has a completely nonstick flat bottom; it cooks pancakes quickly and evenly; the handles do not get hot; it cleans with a swipe of a sponge. Even the browned-on chicken bits came right off. And the red is so cheerful.

I REALLY wanted to buy a a cast iron double-burner griddle, but after reading a lot of reviews and based on my previous experience with cast iron griddles, I decided to give this one a try. Cast-iron griddles seem to often have problems heating evenly and are slow to heat up. They can also be difficult to clean. I wanted something that was easy to clean and durable, and something that heated evenly on a gas range.
I bought this griddle over three months ago and use it 2 - 3 times a week. I am not disapointed. I mostly do pancakes, French toast, griddle breads, sausages and sliced turkey breast on it and the hard nonstick surface cleans up great with a Dobie and dish soap with hardly any effort. The non-stick surface seems to be a lot more durable than Teflon-like products. Although my burners don't have perfectly symetrical flames, the griddle heats evenly even in the space between the burners. I attibute that even heating to the fairly heavy aluminum base. I can't speak to electric ranges (although I expect it would do great), but I believe I made the right choice for my gas range.

Bought this for our Glass cooktop stove and it is perfect. We have other KitchenAid pots and pans and they have always been great - this met our expectations. It heats evenly, looks great and cleans up very easily (no no stick spray ever needed!).

You won't find a better two burner griddle. I make my pancakes, eggs and bacon at the same time. Just keep your heat at medium or lower.

So... I hate to change this from a solid 5 star product, but I have to say, I do have a small complaint. The handles, at least in my case, DO in fact get HOT. Not so hot that you *can't* hold them, but definitely hot enough that you'd much rather NOT hold them.
I have a glass top electric range and this fits over two burners perfectly. It even heats fairly evenly which really impressed me as I don't have a "bridge" burner. To be specific about my complaint here, I thought it would be worth mentioning this as well: the handles are NOT over the heating elements, and yet, they still get quite hot. That being said, it works great! The non-stick surface is one of the best I've ever dealt with. Food just comes right off. I cooked pancakes without oil/butter/shortening, just directly on the griddle, and I had zero trouble flipping them. I cooked an enormous amount of food on this thing in about half the time it had previously taken me with 3 separate pans. Overall, very impressed. But it was quite a shock to grab the handle expecting it to be warm, and finding it bordering on painful. |
