4.0 out of 5 stars Great new design, but Kitchenaid's cheapened the material
I own two Kitchenaid KSM90 mixers and have used them heavily over twenty years. The newer dough hook design (one of my mixers dates to 1989, the other to around 1995) is MUCH improved over the old one--if you own an older machine, you may want to consider replacing the hook. I use my machines side by side and the newer hook takes about half as long as the old one to mix...

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay
I love, love, love our Kitchenaid mixer, but I'm not thrilled with the quality of the dough hooks - I'm about to order our 3rd in less than 12 months. The enamel cracks on the end of the hook, and I'm afraid that using it risks chips of enamel ending up in the finished dough. Granted - they're only $15 to replace, but I don't feel like I should need to replace it so...

I own two Kitchenaid KSM90 mixers and have used them heavily over twenty years. The newer dough hook design (one of my mixers dates to 1989, the other to around 1995) is MUCH improved over the old one--if you own an older machine, you may want to consider replacing the hook. I use my machines side by side and the newer hook takes about half as long as the old one to mix and knead the dough.

BUT (and this is a big, inexcusable but) somewhere along the line, Kitchenaid started using aluminum as the base metal in the hook, and if it's put through the dishwasher, it will eventually corrode, bubble up, crack the nylon coating, and make it impossible to slide onto the mixer shaft. I simply do not know why they'd have made such a decision, unless to save a few dollars and make more when we all have to buy replacement after replacement (who's going to bother handwashing, anymore?).

I really wish they'd offer these in stainless steel, as they do for the higher-end mixers.

The first dough hook I had from 20 years ago lasted like 15 years. The second one lasted 5 years. The third one lasted one month -- 3 uses, and it's shot. In each case, the plastic coating starting flaking off. Why, I might be feeding my family plastic! Ick! am now looking for a mixer with stainless steel hook.

5.0 out of 5 stars new dough hook saved the day!, April 23, 2009
This review is from: KitchenAid K45DH Dough Hook Replacement for KSM90 and K45 Stand Mixer (Kitchen)
I had my kitchen aid mixer for over 10 years, with a bread hook that I use constantly. Unfortunately, I have placed it in the dishwasher too many times, and know now, that was a no-no.... It eventually wore out from dishwashing it. I am so thankful I was able to replace my new dough hook, knowing that it was needed to make bread for over 250 people within this month. I received my dough hook in time from Amazon. Yes, I continue to make bread with my kitchen aid hook, but, will be handwashing it from now on, which is not that hard to do.

I have this dough hook and find it to be very helpful in making bread. I hardly do any hand kneeding because this takes care of it for me. I sometimes have trouble with it nicking the bowl, but that has more to do with the height setting in the mixer.

1.0 out of 5 stars a real let down from kitchenaid, July 14, 2011
This review is from: KitchenAid K45DH Dough Hook Replacement for KSM90 and K45 Stand Mixer (Kitchen)
My original kitchenaid hook lasted more than a year, and then the powdered coating came off and I sent for a replacement. The very first time I used the replacement dough hook, the powdered coating started coming off in chunks. I sent that one back and got a new replacement and am having the same problem, I used it once and the powder coating started flaking off, not as bad as the first but not good. I am so disappointed in kitchenaid, I thought they made quality products. I really don't want to eat paint chips in my bread, so if this is the best they can do, I think I'll switch to Bosch.

Was skeptical when reading all the bad reviews. However, it's not bad. I don't put it in the dishwasher and only hand wash it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product except for the white paint that goes off, February 9, 2011

A great hppk. I use it to knead the bread, and honestly it is a superior quality and strong, I make very rich bread, with dates, nuts, to it is very hard to knead it by hands, this hook is so strong it doesn't bend or break, my old one has been in the family for over 20 years now. So it is a solid product.
I would however mention the painting on the hook, (white solid paint) sometimes it goes off it, and I am not sure whether it is a health hazard or not, but I remove the particles each time I see some.
Overall, great product, I do recommend.

Perfect for kneading. As a novice chef, you wouldn't think that a tool would make the task that much easier, but it does. Wouldn't think of preparing bread or noodles now without one.

This product is a bit tricky. None of the product descriptions state that this works with a 4.5 quart mixing bowl. When looking up the stand mixer models it is listed as compatible with it does not indicate a bowl size either. However, when I looked up my specific mixer it says this hook is compatible. The hook does not reach near the bottom of the bowl so you need a pretty good size ball of dough to get all of the ingrediants mixed. Takes longer than mixing the ingrediants by hand but so much easier.
