Product Description

Amazon.com Review

With its ample dimensions and burly construction, this commercial 5-quart KitchenAid mixer is prepared to be a culinary beast of burden. Smartly engineered so that the beater moves clockwise while the shaft moves counterclockwise, the beater reaches every part of the bowl without requiring it to rotate. Five mixing speeds plus a stir setting means the appliance can do everything from folding cranberries into biscotti to whipping up a fluffy meringue. The all-metal construction includes a heavy-duty motor to handle stiff batters and a hardwearing transmission that ensures continuous power. The mixer’s seamless, stainless-steel, 5-quart bowl stands flat on its indented base and features sealed handle and bracket connections that meet NSF standards. A professional-style bowl lift raises it easily and securely into position, even if it’s brimming with weighty dough.

The mixer comes with a burnished flat beater, a burnished dough hook, and a commercial wire whip. The flat beater is perfect for mixing cake batters, mashing potatoes, and stirring quick breads. The dough hook comes in handy for breads and coffee cakes, and the wire whip is your tool for icings and whipped cream.

Four sealed rubber feet hold the mixer stably in place, and a 3-wire, 6-foot power cord meets commercial requirements. As a safety mechanism, the overload reset button pops out if the mixer is overloaded, and the motor shuts off. If you only bake occasionally, a less heavy-duty unit will do the job. But if you work or recreate in the kitchen, this hard-working mixer can keep the pace. --Emily Bedard

5.0 out of 5 stars A better Kitchen Aid?, December 28, 2002
This review is from: KitchenAid K5SSWH Commercial 5-Quart Mixer, White (Kitchen)
It didn't seem possible to me that KitchenAid could improve on its line of mixers. After all, they are well built, last for years and are powerful tools.

But I was wrong. This mixer has a 350 watt motor with 5 speeds - it seems much more powerful than the other KitchenAids. It comes with the standard dough hook, whish and beater. It has a 6 foot heavy duty cord.

And it also has a thermal overload reset - this is particularly good when you're in your fourth batch of a 9 cup bread dough recipe and it starts to overheat. And the others will overheat - this reset solves this problem.

This is a serious mixer for those who do a lot of cooking, especially baking. It can handle heavy bread doughs as well as make wonderful meringue. And it keeps working and working and working...so if you're tired of replacing your mixer every year or so or youre ready to move on to the more powerful toys, this is the mixer for you. You won't be sorry you bought a KitchenAid.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best For A Reason, June 15, 2003

Someone wrote a bad review for this mixer and I had to reply.
This is the only mixer you will find in your favorite restaurants, catering halls and culinary schools for a reason: It is the best. I'm sorry the other reviewer had a bad experience but this mixer does come with a warranty and if his could not handle a 1 pound loaf then he should have taken advantage of the warranty because that experience is not the norm. I've taken several culinary classes at several different top culinary schools and every one used KitchenAid mixers like this one. Every restaurant I know has one of these mixers in its kitchen and I have no problem making TWO loaves of bread at a time with the one I have in my kitchen. I've used KitchenAid mixers for a long time and it is well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good choice... depending on what you use it for, June 2, 2004
This review is from: KitchenAid K5SSWH Commercial 5-Quart Mixer, White (Kitchen)
In my pastry arts program at the French Culinary Institute (which I would fully recommend to serious bakers), we have used two different stand mixers: this one, and the Hobart N-50. There are definitely perks to each, and I would recommend the KitchenAid for its 5 speeds (as opposed to the Hobart's 3), it doesn't need to be reset as often as the Hobart, and it's almost impossible to strip the gears or kill the motor with rough use. On the Hobart, you have to turn off the motor to change the speed, with the KitchenAid, you don't. However, the top speed on the KitchenAid is considerably slower than the top speed on the Hobart (think bad if you need a meringue for a test or cookies for your kids' bake sales in a hurry). For the serious home baker, I would probably recommend this mixer for ease of use and ability.
