5.0 out of 5 stars A better Kitchen Aid?
It didn't seem possible to me that KitchenAid could improve on its line of mixers. After all, they are well built, last for years and are powerful tools.

But I was wrong. This mixer has a 350 watt motor with 5 speeds - it seems much more powerful than the other KitchenAids. It comes with the standard dough hook, whish and beater. It has a 6 foot heavy duty cord.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from these...
OK, so you see them on every cooking show on TV. Are they that good? Not likely. I broke mine very quickly making a 1-loaf(!) recipe of toasting bread, using King Arthur bread-machine flour. The gear-box seized after several runs where is plainly overheated(!), even though I was running it at a fast speed to avoid just that. 10 minutes of kneading high-gluten flour is...

5.0 out of 5 stars A better Kitchen Aid?, December 28, 2002

It didn't seem possible to me that KitchenAid could improve on its line of mixers. After all, they are well built, last for years and are powerful tools.

But I was wrong. This mixer has a 350 watt motor with 5 speeds - it seems much more powerful than the other KitchenAids. It comes with the standard dough hook, whish and beater. It has a 6 foot heavy duty cord.

And it also has a thermal overload reset - this is particularly good when you're in your fourth batch of a 9 cup bread dough recipe and it starts to overheat. And the others will overheat - this reset solves this problem.

This is a serious mixer for those who do a lot of cooking, especially baking. It can handle heavy bread doughs as well as make wonderful meringue. And it keeps working and working and working...so if you're tired of replacing your mixer every year or so or youre ready to move on to the more powerful toys, this is the mixer for you. You won't be sorry you bought a KitchenAid.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best For A Reason, June 15, 2003

Someone wrote a bad review for this mixer and I had to reply.
This is the only mixer you will find in your favorite restaurants, catering halls and culinary schools for a reason: It is the best. I'm sorry the other reviewer had a bad experience but this mixer does come with a warranty and if his could not handle a 1 pound loaf then he should have taken advantage of the warranty because that experience is not the norm. I've taken several culinary classes at several different top culinary schools and every one used KitchenAid mixers like this one. Every restaurant I know has one of these mixers in its kitchen and I have no problem making TWO loaves of bread at a time with the one I have in my kitchen. I've used KitchenAid mixers for a long time and it is well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good choice... depending on what you use it for, June 2, 2004
This review is from: KitchenAid K5SSWH Commercial 5-Quart Mixer, White (Kitchen)
In my pastry arts program at the French Culinary Institute (which I would fully recommend to serious bakers), we have used two different stand mixers: this one, and the Hobart N-50. There are definitely perks to each, and I would recommend the KitchenAid for its 5 speeds (as opposed to the Hobart's 3), it doesn't need to be reset as often as the Hobart, and it's almost impossible to strip the gears or kill the motor with rough use. On the Hobart, you have to turn off the motor to change the speed, with the KitchenAid, you don't. However, the top speed on the KitchenAid is considerably slower than the top speed on the Hobart (think bad if you need a meringue for a test or cookies for your kids' bake sales in a hurry). For the serious home baker, I would probably recommend this mixer for ease of use and ability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have For Your Kitchen, May 2, 2004

I just wanted to chime in as I read a lot of the posted reviews before I bought this mixer from Amazon. First, my mixer showed up in just a few days. Great service as always from Amazon. As for the mixer - after mixing up one batch of cookies, I was already asking myself how I got by without one of these things. So far I'ved used the mixer for cookies, cakes, and pizza dough and it has worked beautifully. My wife was skeptical about me ordering this, asking me why we needed another "toy" in the kitchen? Her doubts quickly disappeared the first time she used it to mix up peanut butter bars. She loves the mixer too! If you cook/bake at all, a mixer such as this is as essential as having an oven/stove.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely no other way to go, January 22, 2004

Straight up, I am able to say this is the best mixer you can get. If you are experienced in cooking or not, the three attachments offer options for your mixing. I am looking into buying one of these mixers for my family, my boyfriend's parents, etc. In my culinary arts class these are the only mixers we have, and they do the job for anything you'd need.

A comment to the person that complained about the banging when the dough was mixing on high: This is because you don't leave the dough on high once it is near finished; you should take it out and knead it for a few extra minutes. It's hard on your KitchenAid Mixer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what the review states, July 22, 2003
This review is from: KitchenAid K5SSWH Commercial 5-Quart Mixer, White (Kitchen)
I bought this mixer and just received it yesterday. I have to say that this mixer is great, but there are a few minor things. First of all, it is not 350 watts, rather 325 watts. Also, there is no reset button to prevent overheating, contrary to what the reviews may say, but I'm not complaining too much since I got it for a great price!
I did mix a batch of dough yesterday as soon as I received the mixer. (I ran out to greet the UPS man!) I was so excited! It mixes very well! The only thing is that it does start to make a banging sound when the dough is fully mixed on high, so I had to switch to low to finish it up.
I would definitely recommend this mixer to anyone in the market for one. You will not regret your decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty Series vs. Professional 5 Series, December 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: KitchenAid K5SSWH Commercial 5-Quart Mixer, White (Kitchen)
Just a note to the previous poster: There are 2 series for the 5 quart capacity bowl-lift mixer. Sounds like you have one from the Heavy Duty Series which is 325 watts. The Professional 5 Series is 350 watts.

10 minutes of kneading high-gluten flour is too much for this machine. "Commercial" is just something dreamed up in the marketing department of KitchenAid. Their engineers did a really lousy job - you can read more reviews on epinions.com.

So, I searched and found a Bosch Universal - a 700W unit. Tried the same bread I killed my KitchenAid with. I had to make a double batch for the machine to even sound like it was working on something and not just turning in thin air! Spend your money on that instead! (It is NOT more expensive). It beats the Kitc+henAid hands down. Hats off to German Engineering!
