use it for butter,

Just to clarify the product description - the opening in the middle of the lid is actually a cup-like depression, and the bottom is closed, so that the lid closes off the bowl. The cup is for the part of the mixer head that holds the blade to nestle down into, so the mixer head can sit level.
We have only one bowl, so we cut the bottom out of one lid and use it as a shield to keep cream from slinging out when we make butter. Works great!

There isn't much you say about a plasic cover, but I'll try... These covers fit securely over the bowl for kepting whatever you're mixing fresh. You can also store anything in it like it was a tuperware (spelling?) item. I'd recomend having them around, because you'll use them! These are for the 4 1/2 quart bowl and are dishwasher safe!

Well, they work, and will keep food fresh while being stored in the refrigerator, and keep the bowls clean while in storage. One note, they seem to be overpriced for what you get.

KitchenAid live chat just told me to order "KTA KBC90N, 2 Pack Mixer Bowl Covers for 4.5-Quart Models" for my 2-year old Artisan mixer with a 5-quart bowl.

I like these lid covers as they fit very well. I have always had a hard time with plastic wrap sticking, or aluminum foil tearing. I would recommend this if you need to store your recipes for a bit before serving them. I also like the sturdiness of these lids as it does not allow flavors to mix when you put them in the refrigerator.

If you are looking for the lid (er - mixer bowl cover) that fits new 5 Quart colored artisan KitchenAids, this is it! This lid fits my bowl perfectly. The lid says non-sealing, but this is close to air tight. For example, when I proof bread dough in it the lids bows up due to the increased pressure inside.
Couldn't be happier. No more plastic wrap.

I didn't buy these for food storage - I bought them so I could keep my attachments inside the mixer bowl on the counter, without them getting covered with grease and coffee grounds. For that purpose, these lids are perfect. The center well looks odd, but it's just the right depth to clear the mixer shaft when the lid is on the bowl on the mixer, and almost the right width to allow two covered bowls to be stacked and stay stable (the base of the top bowl goes into the well in the bottom bowl's lid - the fit is a little tight, but still works). The lids lost a star because I washed one of them in hot water in the dishwasher (on the bottom rack), and it shrunk slightly. It still goes on the bowl, but it strains to fit. I believe the instructions say "top rack" dishwasher safe, so you could chalk this up to user error, not necessarily to bad design.

One of the things I really enjoy about my Kitchenaid stand mixer is that I can keep the attachments (whisk, beater, and dough hook) inside the bowl when not in use. These covers fit snugly on the bowl (and even though they have an indentation, still leave room for all the attachments) and do a marvelous job of keeping everything CLEAN. I would HATE having to wash off the dust every time I wanted to use the machine. I'm not talking about leaving it alone for a month at a go. Even two days is enough to get some dust in there, since it lives in a high-traffic kitchen. Since I purchased these covers, I can just clean everything, pop on the cover and I'm ready to go the instant I want to mix something. You really can't go wrong. My only complaint is that they are only dishwasher safe on the top shelf, and I'd even only rate them as 90% safe up there, at least in my high-temperature dishwasher. The lids still fit, and are still functional, but there was a very minor warpage... and that's the top shelf. Still, be careful and you'll have no problems.

The picture makes these look like they have a hole in the middle. They do not, what you are seeing is an indentation to account for the stirring thing which sits below the bowl edge when the mixer is in it's lowered position.
We got them for sanitary storage but they create a decent enough seal for storing unused mix/dough.

This product is extremely worthwhile for anyone wanting to store their beaters in the bowl. The only semi-odd thing is that these are sold in pairs (guess I'll have to add another bowl when the amazon price is right). It keeps the inside of the bowl clean, it gives you a place to store the beaters, and it keeps the cats from trying to reach into the bowl and play with the beaters. What more could you ask of it? This is probably one of the best and easiest to justify additions for anyone with a kitchenaid stand mixer with the proper size bowl (especially when they have it on sale).
