What a disappointment. I am a huge Kitchenaid fan and I can't believe the poor quality of this toaster oven. As others have said, the finish is poor...the paint is not smooth and is chipping off around the oven door straight out of the box. The stainless steel trim is rough and cheap looking; it seems poorly machined. As for the performance, toasting is totally aggravating since the top element gets MUCH hotter than the bottom. The timer is cheap and the "ticking" is annoying. When the timer ends, the bell is out of synch. There is no on/off switch; just the timer to control the oven. I expected MUCH more from a toaster oven in this price range. I was happier with my old Toastmaster that cost about $40 and lasted for years. You can do much better than this for considerably less money.

Good company, bad product,
This review is from: KitchenAid KCO1005OB 1/2-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Countertop Oven, Onyx Black (Kitchen)
I, too, am SO disappointed with this product. When our DeLonghi toaster oven died after 15 years, my husband and I went shopping for a new one. Numerous reviewers and salespeople informed us that DeLonghi toaster ovens just weren't as good as they used to be, so we decided to try the KitchenAid oven. It appeared to be solidly built and was a brand we'd always been satisfied with. The oven, which was bought from a major retailer, looked fine, but the timer and bell were out of synch. Even worse, while the top coils heated up nicely, the bottom ones heated very unevenly. KitchenAid Customer Service was friendly and helpful and offered to send a replacement oven along with a mailing label so we could return the defective oven to them at no expense. Less than a week later the new oven arrived. It looked perfect. But again, it didn't work. This time the top coils glowed brightly while the bottom ones barely heated up. After preheating the oven for 5 minutes and positioning bread for toasting exactly as instructed in the owner's manual, we found that the oven produced a piece of toast that was beautifully and evenly golden on top and absolutely white on the bottom. Now we'll have to return this oven as well, and we've pretty much given up on getting a KitchenAid one at all.

I expected better from KitchenAid,

I expected a lot more from this oven, bought to replace a flimsy B&D large capacity that lasted nearly 2 years. The paint was chipped where it met the chrome in my case too. I can live with that. The timer works for only 30 minutes, a definate minus. One hour should be minimum. I made a potato casserole and the top burned. Likewise, garlic breadsticks that were in for only 2 minutes, not the 4 called for. Toast is beautiful...on top only. A Barber Chicken Kiev was dry. I bought this because of the brand name as KitchenAid always meant the top of the line to me. I have a chicken I want to try roasting in it...but the timer will have to be reset. The handles are not necessary and stick out too far. You must keep this 4" away from all walls, backsplashes etc. A real downer. Some insulation would be welcome. It seems sturdy, but performance is lacking. They should have given this one a little more thought.

Smoke doesn't look as nice,
By Howard (DeKalb, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: KitchenAid KCO1005OB 1/2-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Countertop Oven, Onyx Black (Kitchen)
The great appearnace and slide out crumb tray made this seem as if it was a really good oven. The first few times that I tried toast it took too long and came out dry and uneven. The 4th time I tried toast, I went for broke and put in 4 slices of wheat bread. It must have sensed that I was trying to tax its cabilities because it issued thick smoke from the control chamber on the right side. The smoke just doesn't look as nice as the oven, so I decided not to keep it. I think this is a pretty poor record of usage for less than a week.

NOT Worth the price!,

I am VERY disappointed in this Kitchen Aid Oven. I wanted to get rid of my huge four slice toaster and try this beautiful six slice toaster oven, plus my husband sometimes eats a little later than the rest of the family the days he hits traffic coming home so I thought this would be GREAT to keep his food warm in without putting on my oven. Well, I gave up after 10 minutes trying to toast a bagel,it just dried out and NEVER toasted! The timer which is only 30 minutes drove me CRAZY with the constant ticking sound and the plate I tried to put in the oven did not fit! It was just a regular size dinner plate. I always read reviews on items before I buy. This time the item was on sale, it looked nice and it had a reputable name. I guess none of that matters because now I have to lug it back to the store!

POOR QUALITY CONTROL,

This review is from: KitchenAid KCO1005OB 1/2-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Countertop Oven, Onyx Black (Kitchen)
I was so anxious to receive this countertop oven but have been completely disappointed in KitchenAids quality control. The first oven I received had a dented door, timer that wasn't synchronized with the bell, and a broiling pan that was severely damaged and dented. My replacement was also defective. The black plastic surrounding the stainless door was chipped in numerous places. The price does not reflect the quality of this oven. I decided to try for a third oven, but the customer service rep informed me that problems with this oven were more widespread than anticipated and couldn't send me another. Just as well, because I am switching to a Cuisinart. KitchenAid should try making these in the USA like their mixers. I'm sure quality would improve greatly!!!

Great alternative to large oven or microwave,

I've had my KA countertop oven for a year now and I love it. I use it at least a couple times a week, sometimes for reheating, other times for cooking lunch or dinner.
My kids are famous for not finishing their food and the countertop oven does an awesome job reheating and making things appetizing again. Pizza and french fries are two things that crisp up so nicely vs. the soggy, unevenly warmed results you get from a microwave. With just 2-3 of us eating dinner, I find I use the countertop oven to make lunch or dinner quite often, especially in the summer when I don't want to use the big oven and heat up the house. The use and care manual has some really yummy recipes - the Asian Chicken Drummettes are finger licking good. But since I use mine so often, I wanted more recipes, so I even bought a toaster oven cookbook to give me more options. The broil feature works so well that it brought broiled food back into our lives. I have a gas oven at home and HATE the broiler down by the floor so I had not made any broiled foods in 8 years. Now nachos and open face sandwiches are an option again! I've looked at some of the negative reviews and am truly surprised by them. The one thing I can't vouch for is the toasting ability of the countertop oven, since I have a toaster and always use that and have never tried toast in this unit. I can truly say this is one the most useful and most used gifts I have ever received!

I like the other reviewer was highly anticipating this oven. My guess is that Kitchenaid has had issues with it as I believe they postponed the initial release by about 3 months.
My unit arrived without any damage to the unit but it also had the paint chipping off where the stainless steel facing meets the painted frame. I called Kitchenaid and I guess was one of the fortunate ones to get another unit shipped to me which; although not perfect, was much better. I too have been less than pleased with the overall quality control. As for the operation of the unit, no problems! I am still satisifed with my purchase but certainly feel that Kitchenaid has a few assembly issues that need to be resolved.

This countertop oven takes up a little more space than a four slice toaster but does much more. Since buying the Kitchen Aid countertop oven, I have used my regular oven much less, cutting down on energy costs. It toasts and warms whole bagels and rolls with ease. The oven is well made and was worth the amount we paid for it, actually much less than in the department stores!

High quality and durable product,
This review is from: KitchenAid KCO1005OB 1/2-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Countertop Oven, Onyx Black (Kitchen)
This is a beautifully built, solid product, especially compared to other brands of toaster ovens! It is durable and looks great on my counter. I bought it to avoid the need to heat up my regular oven. It does not need to be preheated, so it is quick and easy to use. My only complaint is that it has only a 30 minute timer, but that really isn't much of an issue. I am pleased with its performance . It toasts, bakes, broils. It is really a quality product, typical of the KitchenAid name.
