We ended up getting this unit solely because of the cutout size of the existing cabinetry and this was the best(and most expensive) option we seemed to have. We had a Whirlpool prior to this and the microwave failed years ago, while the oven was still functioning--never get a combination unit for that reason. Installed on 12/27/2012 and ever since then, there are three types of malfunctions in the microwave:
1. There is still :01 secs in the timer left when the microwave reads "Cooking Complete" and beeps. This seems to be the most innocuous, as otherwise the food gets hot. May be a rounding error in the software, but happens very frequently. I will upload a video.
2. In this one, the microwave is on, turntable rotates, counter counts down, but the sound is a low hum of the turntable rotating, but the fan is not on. This is with the regular microwave function, not the convection part. So far, this has happened about 6-7 times. We haven't tested the food, whether it gets hot during those times. I haven't been able to replicate it, as when the technician came, but fortunately, I had videotaped it as it happened again the day before he came. It happens at random times and random settings.
3. This third type has happened about thrice so far, where when time is entered for a full power cook function and upon pressing start, nothing happens. No sound, no countdown, no turntable rotating, but the microwave displays "Cooking..." as when it does when everything works correctly. So far no luck with customer service. Will report if anything changes.

Honestly, I am more disappointed in the customer service. Our unit stopped working March 15, 2014 after purchasing in late August of 2013. Today is April 15, 2014 and there is still no resolution. We were informed today that they will send out for the fourth time, a technician to give a “second” opinion based off of the first technician’s three assessments. The first technician replaced three of the major components as instructed by KitchenAid’s tech sheet. This has put us in a very difficult situation since each time they schedule a technician we get one of those typical 4 hour window responses of when they will be there. I guess our time is not important to KitchenAid as we should just be available at their convenience. I would really love to just get my money back and purchase another brand. I want to say that we went with KitchenAid due to brand recognition and felt that this was a brand we could trust. I no longer feel that I can trust or depend on them. As a home consumer, what good is a brand without trust or dependability and timely customer service follow-through?

I don't normally give one star reviews, but...

We only used the microwave of this combination unit maybe ten times previously when after about two minutes of reheating, there was a popping noise, after which the microwave failed to start again. We tried disconnecting the circuit for five minutes or so. No luck. I called Whirlpool service who had us try the circuit switch again, which failed again, then scheduled a service appointment for four days forward - the unit is, of course, still under the one year warranty.

On the day of the appointment, the tech calls at 3:00 PM (mid-way through the scheduled 1:00 - 5:00 PM service window) and asks me, "Did they (Whirlpool service) send you an appliance manager?" They didn't. He didn't have one on his truck, and even if he had, he "didn't have two men to help pull the unit out of the wall", which is necessary to replace the appliance manager. "Well, planned - you guys really have your stuff together", I thought. So, now, I wait until at least September 3rd (over two weeks) to get a replacement board. Meanwhile, thankfully, I have a 25 year old Kenmore microwave in my garage that has been seriously abused and has never once needed service.

BTW, the service tech highly recommended that we get an extended warranty because "the appliance manager fails regularly on this model". Now, that inspires confidence.

For nearly $4,000, I think a functional, reliable microwave would be a given. My advice is to avoid this product.

This gets a bad wrap in the reviews, and I ony brought it as I was stuck to replacing my ond one with a combination oven of the same dimensions. Easy to install, looks good, and works great!

The main oven takes forever to reach selected temperature. In particular, there's a very long wait between 395 and 400 degrees. Our old Whirlpool reached cooking temp in about half the time. For the price, this is pretty lame.
