3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult cleanup, components not hardy enough
I bought this KitchenAid food processor about three or four years ago after doing extensive research between this and Cuisinart. It functions as promised and I've used it to grate cheese and mix/puree various items. It's a nice-looking and weighty appliance. I've had no problems with the blades gouging plastic as other reviewers have said, and there's been no problem...

I bought one of these fairly recently. It is well constructed and works well, however whether one of these is right for you or not will depend largely on what you want to do with it.

I bought it because: 1) I have been making bread by hand for several years and am finding it a bit tedious, but am not too keen on bread machines as they can only do one loaf at a time; 2) I periodically make grapefruit marmalade, and cutting up the grapefruit peels is very tedious work that can make your fingers sting (or you can cut yourself); 3) I hate slicing onions as it moves me to tears; 4) a lot of recipes suggest the use of a food processor to slice things quickly.

After some research, this one looked like the one to get. But don't be deceived by the 'Pro' tag on the name, because this thing is way too small to have much professional use.

The first thing I found out is that although this machine is the 11-cup size, it can't really handle more than about 3-4 cups of anything. For example with bread, the largest amount of bread dough it can handle is about 3 1/2 cups, which means you can just about make 1 large loaf. However, it blends the dough very, very quickly once you have figured out the correct proportions of water, so it does not take too long to make 2 loaves one after another, once you have done the measuring etc.

On the marmalade, the machine does a wonderful job of juicing citrus fruit, and is pretty good at chopping up the grapefruit rind, once you figure out which blade to use. Then again, you have to chop the grapefruit by hand into quarters before you can feed it in, and after two grapefruit the work bowl is full, so you have to empty it before you continue. (Makes you wonder about the 'Pro').

It does a great job of slicing onions. Again you and your knife quarter the onions and the Kitchen Aid does the rest. I have found it does help me approach new recipes, for example today I made a squash casserole (more of a souffle, really), and it did a great job of slicing the squash and then blending the other ingredients (with the dough blade).

Yesterday I made a chocolate cheesecake. The machine didn't do such a great job of breaking cookies into crumbs for the base, needing a bit of help from fingers, and I rather think that the old freezer bag and a few whacks with the rolling pin trick is more effective. But it did a wonderful job of blending the ingredients for the filling, which can be tedious by hand, and although I haven't done it yet, I can see it will be great for making pastry and mixing cakes.

So there you have it. Whether it is good for you or not will depend a great deal on what kind of cooking you do. In any case, this is just a power tool with attachments that you may or may not be able to incorporate into your culinary style. There is definitely a learning curve, but if you are a persistent kind of a person, you will probably be able to do some things quicker and some things better with it.

If you want something to peel potatoes or tomatoes, though, you will need a spouse, a lover, or an obedient child.

4.0 out of 5 stars i do like this machine, but..., May 28, 2002

(REAL NAME)
i have a cuisinart from the second year the product was available, and i loved it from the first time i used it. however, it's large, and accessories had been lost in various moves, so i decided to get a smaller, newer machine. some of the comments from reviewers, and the consumer's reports rating, pointed me in the kitchen aid direction.

the first thing i noticed about the machine was how quiet it is. the next was that, unlike the cuisinart, it does not leave slight amounts of liquid on the bottom of the bowl when processing a batter (not a recipe threatening thing, but this suggests better mixing with the kitchenaid). i like having all the accessories, expecially the egg white whip.

the small bowl and steel blade worked very well in making a struesel topping for a coffee cake and in pureeing vegetables and spices for an indian dish.

but, be aware: the 11-cup capacity means you won't be able to mix up a three-layer cake recipe, or any other similar recipe. the chef's bowl can only be used with the disks, something not mentioned in the amazon review. for some this may not be a problem, but i was disappointed. i have recipes for which i could easily use two large bowls with the steel blade and i had hoped that, with the chef's bowl included, i would not have to order another bowl.

when making a spinach dip (which the machine mixed superbly well), for some reason the base bounced continuously. since the most solid ingredient was bits of dried vegatable, i am at a loss to explain this.

overall, though, i am very happy with the machine. while i have kept my cuisinart for those times i need the capacity of its larger bowl, i use the kitchenaid more frequently. the smallest work bowl is perfect for many of the tasks i used to find easier to do by hand. and, even though i was disappointed in the limitations of the chef's bowl, having the three bowls is a great convenience. the mixing action is extremely good. its wonderfully quiet. i would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Food Processor for the money, February 15, 2002
By A Customer

After looking at all the food processors I felt that while this model cost more than the others, it's more cost effective because of all the accessories that are included. The juicer works great and can take a grapefruit down in a couple of seconds. It has an egg whipper which is great for whipping egg whites into a fluffy consistancy. It includes a container for storing the blades. My wife absolutely loves this piece of kitchen equipment and she has it sitting proudly next to her Kitchen Aid blender and Kitchen Aid coffee maker. I can't recommend this product highly enough you won't be sorry you spent the little extra money for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way beyond my expectations, October 27, 2002
Being in the market for a food processor I naturally purchased the Cuisinart model at a local store. I was led to believe that Cuisinart was unbeatable as a food processor. Wrong! I returned the Cuisinart after one day and resumed my search. After reading the reviews of the KitchenAid KFP 670 on Amazon I decided to, once again, take a chance. This was a great decision! This is a kitchen appliance that, in my opinion, not only lives up to its reputation but exceeds it. The food processor has performed flawlessly in every application I have tried with it. Having had the opportunity to operate both the Cuisinart and the KitchenAid I feel there's no comparison. The KitchenAid is a superior product with the Cuisinart food processor having only one small advantage, that of a longer warranty. While a longer warranty would've been nice, the quality and sturdiness of the KitchenAid will, I think, in most cases make a longer term warranty unnecessary. It was an excellent choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Somebody Pinch Me!, December 30, 2003
By A Customer
Absolutely PHENOMENAL!! This is the best thing I think I've ever bought. As an avid cook, I wanted help chopping, mincing, and grinding; but was not sure I would find this handy enough for daily use. After careful research, I settled on this luxury machine, and have not looked back since. I can't believe I didn't get it sooner. Here are the top reasons to buy it if you have the counter space and cook alot:

1. Overall quality combined with powerful, yet extremely quiet motor. Slicing and shredding is precise and so efficient. I made ratatouille for Christmas, and it took under one minute to slice zucchinis, eggplants, bell peppers, and onions for ten people. The machine is so powerful that you will rarely use the "on" button. Almost everything can be processed with a maximum of 5 "pulses." Grinding meat is a pleasure too. I now grind my own beef and pork, making alot of dishes lighter tasting.

2. Easy to use once you get the hang of it. Being new to food processing, even I was able to fully utilize the processor quickly. The construction is so logical, and the manual explains everything. I leave mine on the counter, and use it daily. It helps that the machine is sleek and beautiful. You won't mind looking at it.

3. Really safe- the motor does not turn on unless everything is aligned the right way.

4. Two-sized feed tube- this feature is what prompted me to get the 670 specifically. The other 11-cup Kitchenaid has only one size feed tube. This has a 3 inch opening and a 1.5 inch opening. If you do any amount of stir-frying, you will be grateful for this feature because it feeds virtually any amount and configuration of vegetables onto the disc to ensure precise cutting.

5. Three bowls- 11 cup, 9 cup, and 3 cup really helps when you need it- during big dinners when you don't have time to clean up between jobs. The 3 cup bowl is really useful for making all kinds of marinades involving herbs and spices.

6. Excellent customer service. I called with a question about usage, and the Kitchenaid people really are helpful and have a great attitude.

7. Minimal liquid spillage. Although food processors tend to leak when the mixture contains too much liquid, this one contains most everything I've thrown at it.

8. Easy to clean. There are no crevices for the food to get stuck in. It takes one drop of detergent, and a little whirling of water to get the bowls spic and span.

The only con for me is that I like it so much I will have to buy all the other accessories that go with the machine. I found even the thickest slicing disc too thin for cutting vegetables salad-size, so plan to buy the 5-piece set if you buy the processor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!, December 29, 2002

This is the first food processor I've owned, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I got it. I thought it would be helpful, but I didn't quite realize how helpful. The three bowls included really make this machine convenient. I LOVE the mini-bowl. I use this nearly every day to chop garlic, hot peppers, or herbs. The middle bowl is great for slicing/shredding--the only drawback is that you can only use the slicing/shredding tools. In other words, you can't use the all-purpose blade in the middle bowl; you can only use the it in the "main" bowl. But that's easy to work around. I just use the middle bowl for slicing and whatnot, and then I just take it out and continue on to the main bowl to use the all-purpose blade. Of course, this usually means that I have three bowls and a variety of blades to wash after I'm done, but they are dishwasher safe. (Usually, though, I wash the bowls by hand and only put the blades in the dishwasher.)

Other things about the machine and accessories--the base is really heavy, so it doesn't hop around the counter. However, I've used the dough blade once, and the dough I was mixing up was pretty stiff, so I did have to steady the processor in place, but it wasn't a big effort. I've not used the juicer attachment or the egg white whipping attachment, so I can't attest to their various qualities. I really like the storage box for the blades. It's a bit bulky, true, but I just stick it on top of the fridge where it's out of the way. It's nice to not have the blades rattling around in my kitchen drawers.

Finally, again I'd just like to say how great this machine is. I don't have a standard of comparison, but I am completely satisfied with this machine. I use lots of fresh veggies in my cooking, so this has cut my prep time down dramatically. I'd definitely recommend this product to anyone in the market for a good, reliable food processor.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did I cook without it?, September 3, 2003
This review is from: KitchenAid KFP670 Professional Food Processor, Onyx Black (Kitchen)
I've had the KFP670 for a little over two weeks and simply CANNOT fathom why I waited so long to buy it. Since owning it, I've quickly and efficiently made pickles, carrot marmalade, pastry dough, cookies, sliced many batches of vegetables, and grated lots of cheese. I LOVE it.

I read all the reviews for both Kitchen Aid and Cuisinart, read the reviews in Consumer Reports magazine, and talked with folks who owned both brands. I honestly think some of the reviews here are from people whose expectations were a bit over the top. Perhaps a Kitchen Aid mixer would do a better job with bread?

In the end I selected this model based on reviews and the included extras (citrus press, bowls, blades). The blades are *very* sharp, and the machine is amazingly quiet. The main bowl holds a good amount, and the extra mini and chef bowls are well worth the extra cost of this model. The touchpad makes clean-up a breeze, and yes indeed, the bowls, blades and disks do just fine in my dishwasher.

It does take a little forethought to most efficiently use the processor for a complex recipe without stopping to wash the bowl, but I'm sure that will become routine in no time.

My only complaint is with the storage box for the blades and disks. Its ungainly shape and design make storage a challenge. Given the otherwise impressive engineering and thought that went into this delightful machine, Kitchen Aid should have created a much better storage unit.

To sum it up, this marvel is a kitchen workhorse which does many many things very well. Yes, a professional citrus press will squeeze more juice from the orange, but it sure won't slice carrots, let alone the thousand-and-one other tasks this machine will do superbly well.

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing rocks!, February 8, 2004

My husband and I both grew up in homes without a food processor. We did not want our kids to suffer a similar fate. Our first step into kitchen luxury was bringing this thing of beauty into our home for my husband's birthday. We were stoked on it the second we hefted the solid construction out of the box. We started shredding everything in the kitchen. A pound of cheese? HA! Gone in seconds! This machine laughs in the face of hard to grate/shred/mince/blend/whip/juice items. Clean up is super easy, the base it just a wipe down away from sparkling everytime you use it...the touch pad is heaven - no buttons and crevasses to get gunked up. We love it for salsas and veggies for stir-fry and of course since day one - grating cheese! Homemade pizzas are so much better when you get to obliterate the block of cheese in a second flat. We are anxiously exploring other ways to use this puppy. Its quieter than you'd think, and all the parts are very logical to use. Having extra bowls makes meals where you use the processor for more than one thing super simple. Everything goes into the dishwasher no sweat. Then it asks for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Working Mom Favorite, March 25, 2002

I can't believe I ever lived without it! So easy to use and fast and easy to clean. I previously had a mini processor and didn't see the use for a big machine. Now I am in 6 o'clock heaven. Dinner was never so fast leaving me more time for my little one.

Who needs a bread machine? Most of the work is in the kneading which is easily handled by this appliance. You don't have to sacrifice texture and taste as with the bread machine, just pop it in the Kitcehn Aid and relax while it rises.

Also recieved the thumbs up from my mom--a die hard Cusinart fan, not to mention Consumer Reports "best buy."

5.0 out of 5 stars My New Best Friend, November 25, 2004
My Kitchenaid and I have only been friends for the past two weeks. During that time, we have chopped, blended, pulsed and laughed together. I've never had a better friend, except perhaps for Food Processor's cousin, Stan D. Mixer. :o)

Okay, perhaps I'm being a bit silly, but my report is the same as the majority of others. This is a wonderful machine for the home-cooking enthusiast who does NOT want to make huge batches of anything. At an 11-cup capacity, it will be more than adequate for most chores of the home cook. For those who complained about the capacity being inadequate, a wee bit of pre-planning could have avoided disappointment! Always know what you plan to do with an appliance before plunking down a lot of money.

In addition to a strong machine that works extremely well, it comes with a significant number of recipes. I made the stuffed mushrooms appetizer and they were one of the highlights of our Thanksgiving dinner. It also comes with an impressive number of attachments. Best of all, the blades are manufactured by Sabatier... the cream of the crop.

Also, don't be overly afraid to buy refurbished. I purchased this processor for a fraction of the "new" price (also through Amazon) and it was in near-perfect condition. The storage box came with a chunk of plastic missing, and rather than returning the whole shipment to Amazon, I called Kitchenaid. They are sending me a new one. Quality is always important when purchasing an item, but so is the company behind it.

Finally, this is apparently one of the last- if not the last, model that was made in France. The new breed of Kitchenaid food processors are being made in China, which is why they have lowered the prices on the newest models, even though they have larger bowl capacities and more powerful motors to handle the extra capacity. That information came to me directly from Kitchenaid. Thanks, but I'll take the tried and true French model!

Good luck in your food processor decision. You can feel confident in knowing that this model is a winner.
