2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I've had a 350 watt, 5 qt, Kitchenaid mixer for 25 years that still works perfectly. When I saw this more powerful one, I decided to buy it--solid state, bigger bowl, more power for bread dough, plus mine was harvest gold color--yechh.

This review is from: KitchenAid KP2671XBU Professional 6-Quart Stand Mixer, Cobalt Blue (Kitchen)
Please note, per the review stating that the smaller tilt-head mixer is the original design- This is the original Kitchen Aid design descended from the professional mixers used in the food industry (the Hobarts). This design is better for heavier duty use whereas the tilt-head design offers more convenience for lighter home use. As a chef, I prefer the professional model which offers more stability when mixing heavy doughs. The design with the bowl lifting up makes for a more solid motion. If you try cookie dough or scone dough on the Artisan or Ultra Power, you will notice that the head tends to shake once you add nuts or chocolate chips. It does have a lock, and while it does a wonderfully sufficient job for many uses, the Professional is definitely the choice for heavier duty mixing and regular use (more than once a week).

I prefer the smaller Ultra Power in my apartment kitchen, but for my catering jobs I use the Professional since it is the perfect medium between transportability and power.

Obviously most users will want and need only one. They are all excellent mixers. Considerations to keep in mind upon deciding are space limitations (the ultra power slides under my cabinets on the counter and fits under the counter), how often you use it, level of duty (do you need more than 300 watts?), budget if you question wether you need the extra power of the Pro model, chances are you will not be dissapointed with the Artisan or Ultra Power.

If you are upgrading from a hand mixer or a pseudo stand mixer like a sunbeam, you will be thrilled by any kitchenaid.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like my new kitchen aid mixer!, October 29, 2002

I owned a 5 quart kitchen aid stand mixer for 26 years. It was in constant use. I started making bread and this mixer simply wasn't powerful enough. This professional powerful mixer handles bread dough and other heavy duty mixing very well. I read many of the other reviews and was somewhat apprehensive of my purchase. I have found that like any other small appliance; it took a little time to get used to the difference between the mixers. I like this machines extra capacity, power, and stability. This mixers bowl can be raised or lowered closer, or further ,to beatens simply by turning a screw in the front of the stand which solves some of the scraping problem mentioned in one reveiw. On the negative side-this machines beater's do not rotate as fast as my previous mixers. I wish it was faster but overall I enjoy this machine and like the extra power and capacity. Sincerely, Gail Benjamin-Albuquerque, NM

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine for the serious baker, December 13, 2003

I have owned a KitchenAid 325 watt mixer for seven years, and my only complaint was the small 4 1/2 quart size. I like to do double batches when baking, so I finally decided to spring for the professional mixer. This mixer is quite pricey, but I found a great deal on it..still a lot of money to put out for a mixer so I expected perfection. I used the machine one time and there was a bad knocking sound in the motor that I have NEVER heard in my 4 1/2 qt. model. I immediately called KitchenAid and they were wonderful. They shipped out a new machine immediately, in my choice of colors..nice because they didn't have the color I wanted at the store when I bought it. ANYWAY..the warranty really is hassle free, and I received my replacement mixer within a week.

It handles large volumes of dough with ease, and the soft start feature is a Godsend. The pouring shield is large and allows you to add liquid or dry ingredients without stopping the mixer. I use this each and every time I make cookies..lets me add the flour gradually, or eggs one at a time. The mixing action is wonderful, and very little scraping of the bowl is needed to incorporate all the ingredients. Any problems in this area are usually due to the bowl/beater clearance needing to be adjusted. This rarely necessary, but easy enough to do if so needed (I did have to adjust my old mixer once..after a move, think it was not packed well by the movers..it was easy to adjust).

The only reason that I give this machine four stars instead of five is because it is so darn tall that it does not fit under my cabinets, so I can't store it on my countertop. It is a big, heavy machine, and finding a place to store it was not easy. Plus it's a real pain to get it out every time I want to use it and it's HEAVY. This machine needs to be out on the countertop, accessible at all times, and with its 16 1/2 height, that is going to be a problem for a lot of homeowners who don't have floating islands in their kitchens.

All in all I love my machine, and if you bake a lot, or in large amounts then I would definately recommend this model. If you do not need so much power or the 6-qt. bowl, I would recommend the Artisan model because of it's size and cost.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, July 26, 2002
This review is from: KitchenAid KP2671XBU Professional 6-Quart Stand Mixer, Cobalt Blue (Kitchen)
I've had a 350 watt, 5 qt, Kitchenaid mixer for 25 years that still works perfectly. When I saw this more powerful one, I decided to buy it--solid state, bigger bowl, more power for bread dough, plus mine was harvest gold color--yechh.

I was so disappointed in this new model: it's much noisier and doesn't seem to mix as well (need to scrape more often, even though the beaters are perfectly positioned); the design of the handle on the bowl is most uncomfortable when trying to carry with one hand or empty batter into the baking pan.

Unfortunately, I'd given my old one away, but I am so disappointed in the new one that I've purchased the 5-qt Commercial model and am getting rid of this new one.

Still, I would probably recommend this model if you make BIG batches or a lot of bread and need the extra power and capacity.

I grew up using the stand mixer but got the Professional after using it heavily in pastry school. It is much easier to use because it snaps into place and is lifted up and down with a lever, so there's no moving the heavy top and you have plenty of room to stick your spatula in periodically to mix. Also, it starts off bread kneading really well. And because the bowl is a real bowl without the bottom part the stand mixer has, you can move it back and forth over a stove if you're making zabaglione or genoise, and get great results.

5.0 out of 5 stars glad I finally got my dream machine!, November 23, 2003
By A Customer
I worked with my first KitchenAid stand mixer in college in the early 80's. From that time until Christmas 2002, I never managed to have the money to break down and purchase the machine. After looking at all the models, power levels, etc., I decided to spend the extra dollars and get the 6 quart stand mixer. I am so glad I did!

Many times, I have had cookie dough batters up to the rim of the bowl. The machine makes my life so much easier preparing bread dough, mixing cookie batter, slinging together a batch of pancakes, or just simply whipping egg whites for a meringue.

I do recommend purchasing an extra bowl (as I did) for your mixer. The price tag might seem a bit steep, but the number of times I have put the second bowl to use has made it a value. There have been many times that I have had both bowls in use while preparing meals.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Thing, March 4, 2003
By A Customer
I've been wanting a KitchenAid Mixer for years. Several years ago I found a great deal on the Epicurean model, but took it back after the first use because it couldn't handle small jobs. Good thing I did, because all the reviews I've read explain why it was discontinued. However, my desire for this mixer kept me searching.

KitchenAid makes many variations of their Mixer, so I read all of the reviews to establish how they were constructed and what other people liked and disliked to determine exactly what was important to me. Adding ingredients to the Epicurean was a real pain. To avoid this problem I considered purchasing the Artisan because of the tilt head and pouring shield, but was concerned about whether or not it could handle the kids' favorite cookie dough. The stationary head on the Pro is not a problem. With or without the pouring shield, it's very simple to add ingredients. There were also many complaints in the reviews about lesser models with plastic gears that stripped. This model is all metal construction including the gears. Plus it has a large capacity bowl and 525 watts to threaten even the stiffest cookie dough.

I expected to use it strictly for cakes and cookies, but now I'm baking bread regularly. I've never been a bread baker, but I've done wheat bread, french bread and pretzels in the past week and the kids are gleefully skipping around waiting to see what's next on the agenda.

I am so glad I bought this mixer. It has power and size for large jobs and can handle small ones as well. If you like to bake at all I recommend this heavy duty model as once you've experienced its ease and efficiency, you may want to go on to bigger and better things. The metal construction and 525 watts will certainly get you there. I love this thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, August 1, 2003
By
Pliablemoose (TX United States) - See all my reviews
I bought a smaller refurb KitchenAid last month, liked it so much I bought this one & gave the samller one to my in-laws.

The 6 qt mixer is great. Have you ever made a batch of cookies & when you were done , been frustrated because it didn't make as many cookies as you expected? With this mixer, I only make double, triple & quadruple batches of everything, and it works great. I enjoy cooking from scratch, and am determined to make all my co-workers overweight, so far I'm right on track...

Biggest minuses are that it doesn't fit under my upper cabinets like the smaller one, it is noisy, and it is a little aquward to change the beater/remove the bowl.

I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

I am a retired bakery manager. I bought the Kitchen Aid KP2671XWH Professional 6-Quart Stand Mixer 5 years ago. If you love to bake this is the mixer for you. It is strong and powerful, and can handle multiple batches. It's great for cakes, cookie doughs, meatloaf, breads, pastry, just about anything. It also comes in extremely handy for the holiday baking too. I love working with my Kitchen Aid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Serious Cooks and Bakers Look Elsewhere, April 1, 2003
By A Customer
I have had four KitchenAid mixers in 10 years. The first three were the 325-watt, 5-quart mixer, one of which was a replacement sent by KitchenAid under their warranty policy. After the motor went out on the first three, I assumed it was because I was too rough on the mixers (I make a lot of breads and pastas). I was searching for a new mixer from a different manufacturer when I received the 525-watt, 6-quart mixer as a gift. I assumed that having a more powerful mixer would solve my problems. Last week, however, the 525-watt, 6-quart stopped working.

In all cases, the motor burned out. With the 525-watt, 6-quart mixer, I was using the pasta attachment when the burnout occured. The machine was running for about 20 minutes with no problem. I turned off the machine for several minutes and when I tried to resume making pasta the machine would not turn on (and hasn't since). I was completely surprised that a mixer termed "professional" would burn out after only 20 minutes. I had the mixer for less than two years.

I am sure that KitchenAid mixers are sufficient for someone who makes an occasional cake or batch of cookies. If you are a serious cook looking for a durable mixer that will stand up to all your culinary endeavors, then I would look elsewhere than KitchenAid.
