Amazon.com Review

With a 525-watt motor to handle bread doughs and thick cookie batters, this is KitchenAid's most powerful stand mixer, a professional-grade appliance with a heavy, rugged, all-metal construction (31.7 pounds) which prevents "counter walk" on the mixer's rubber feet. It has a 6-quart, polished stainless-steel bowl with an ergonomic handle and a two-piece pouring shield made of heavyweight plastic to provide a large chute for adding ingredients. Accompanying the mixer are a burnished flat beater, a burnished dough hook, and a big wire whip. On the front of the powerhead is a hinged cover for the hub to which KitchenAid's many mixer accessories attach.

This mixer's great features abound. An electronic sensor ensures mixing action remains at the speed selected from among the 10 available--even when the going gets tough. Mixing begins softly to prevent splatters and "flour puff." With the beater moving clockwise and the shaft moving counterclockwise there's no need to rotate the bowl for the beater to reach all ingredients. The bowl-lift lever functions easily. A ventilation system cools the entire mixer to prolong motor life, and a resettable overload-protection system prevents overheating. The mixer measures 11-3/8 inches wide, 16-1/2 inches high, and 14-5/8 inches deep. KitchenAid says the first year of the mixer's lifetime warranty against defects is "hassle-free," with a replacement shipped at no cost and without question if a defect is detected. --Fred Brack

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Original design, September 24, 2002
By A Customer
Please note, per the review stating that the smaller tilt-head mixer is the original design- This is the original Kitchen Aid design descended from the professional mixers used in the food industry (the Hobarts). This design is better for heavier duty use whereas the tilt-head design offers more convenience for lighter home use. As a chef, I prefer the professional model which offers more stability when mixing heavy doughs. The design with the bowl lifting up makes for a more solid motion. If you try cookie dough or scone dough on the Artisan or Ultra Power, you will notice that the head tends to shake once you add nuts or chocolate chips. It does have a lock, and while it does a wonderfully sufficient job for many uses, the Professional is definitely the choice for heavier duty mixing and regular use (more than once a week).

I prefer the smaller Ultra Power in my apartment kitchen, but for my catering jobs I use the Professional since it is the perfect medium between transportability and power.

Obviously most users will want and need only one. They are all excellent mixers. Considerations to keep in mind upon deciding are space limitations (the ultra power slides under my cabinets on the counter and fits under the counter), how often you use it, level of duty (do you need more than 300 watts?), budget if you question wether you need the extra power of the Pro model, chances are you will not be dissapointed with the Artisan or Ultra Power.

If you are upgrading from a hand mixer or a pseudo stand mixer like a sunbeam, you will be thrilled by any kitchenaid.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like my new kitchen aid mixer!, October 29, 2002
By
Gail Benjamin (Albuquerque, New Mexico United States) - See all my reviews
I owned a 5 quart kitchen aid stand mixer for 26 years. It was in constant use. I started making bread and this mixer simply wasn't powerful enough. This professional powerful mixer handles bread dough and other heavy duty mixing very well. I read many of the other reviews and was somewhat apprehensive of my purchase. I have found that like any other small appliance; it took a little time to get used to the difference between the mixers. I like this machines extra capacity, power, and stability. This mixers bowl can be raised or lowered closer, or further ,to beatens simply by turning a screw in the front of the stand which solves some of the scraping problem mentioned in one reveiw. On the negative side-this machines beater's do not rotate as fast as my previous mixers. I wish it was faster but overall I enjoy this machine and like the extra power and capacity. Sincerely, Gail Benjamin-Albuquerque, NM

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine for the serious baker, December 13, 2003
By
Shantelle "runnerchicki" (COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have owned a KitchenAid 325 watt mixer for seven years, and my only complaint was the small 4 1/2 quart size. I like to do double batches when baking, so I finally decided to spring for the professional mixer. This mixer is quite pricey, but I found a great deal on it..still a lot of money to put out for a mixer so I expected perfection. I used the machine one time and there was a bad knocking sound in the motor that I have NEVER heard in my 4 1/2 qt. model. I immediately called KitchenAid and they were wonderful. They shipped out a new machine immediately, in my choice of colors..nice because they didn't have the color I wanted at the store when I bought it. ANYWAY..the warranty really is hassle free, and I received my replacement mixer within a week.

It handles large volumes of dough with ease, and the soft start feature is a Godsend. The pouring shield is large and allows you to add liquid or dry ingredients without stopping the mixer. I use this each and every time I make cookies..lets me add the flour gradually, or eggs one at a time. The mixing action is wonderful, and very little scraping of the bowl is needed to incorporate all the ingredients. Any problems in this area are usually due to the bowl/beater clearance needing to be adjusted. This rarely necessary, but easy enough to do if so needed (I did have to adjust my old mixer once..after a move, think it was not packed well by the movers..it was easy to adjust).

The only reason that I give this machine four stars instead of five is because it is so darn tall that it does not fit under my cabinets, so I can't store it on my countertop. It is a big, heavy machine, and finding a place to store it was not easy. Plus it's a real pain to get it out every time I want to use it and it's HEAVY. This machine needs to be out on the countertop, accessible at all times, and with its 16 1/2 height, that is going to be a problem for a lot of homeowners who don't have floating islands in their kitchens.

All in all I love my machine, and if you bake a lot, or in large amounts then I would definately recommend this model. If you do not need so much power or the 6-qt. bowl, I would recommend the Artisan model because of it's size and cost.
