5.0 out of 5 stars Works flawlessly....
I purchased this item because the original roller attachment from the three-piece set I received over three years ago finally broke. Please bear in mind that I make more pasta than 99% of those who will buy this machine - usually FOUR dozens eggs worth per session (every month or so) - I did not hesitate to buy another.

It works perfectly! It also seems that...

The pasta attachment is very sturdy and well made with one exception. There is a small hole machined into the shaft of the pasta attachment so that it can be securely attached to the mixer. Unfortunately, the hole was machined inproperly and does not line up with the attaching screw on my 6 quart mixer. That means the pasta machine attachment routinely falls off during...

It also seems that they have made some changes since the last model. The copper scraper-plates where the dough is extracted have been changed to plastic (this actually is a GOOD thing, as little bits of copper will not get into your noodles if they break off). Also I have heard that they changed the gears from plastic to metal (another plus for durability if it is true).

My last model was on its way out for a LONG time (you could hear it), and when I used this one I had realized how quiet it used to be when working!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pasta sheet roller works great!, December 26, 2007
By
I am very pleased with the KitchenAid pasta sheet roller. I have made semolina pasta using this attachment, which is very firm and challenging to roll by hand, and the KitchenAid pasta sheet roller makes it very easy and fun. The pasta comes out great. I highly recommend this product. (By the way, it is recommended that you get a higher-watt KitchenAid mixer if you are going to make semolina pasta as the basic KitchenAid mixer only has a 250 watt motor).

4.0 out of 5 stars works well, hard too clean, need other attachments to work, September 23, 2008

This is a good roller, much better than using an Atlas hand pasta machine (which I've done for years). But little pieces of pasta dry up inside and is time consuming to get them out. Last one I had I was cleaning it with a rag and the rag got jammed in (it was turning as I was cleaning the rollers). A brass piece broke inside, so now I am on my second one.

The fact tht you don't have to use one hand to crank while feeding the pasta makes for a better deal. Also, pay attention to the VERY confusing ordering system - you need this pasta roller , AND you need cutters if you want to make anything but sheets, and the various kits all have these weird codes. The picture of this one looks like it makes fettucine, in fact it only makes lasagna so you need to get additional cutters (and a pasta rack) to really use it. I like their egg pasta recipe, BTW.

The pasta attachment is very sturdy and well made with one exception. There is a small hole machined into the shaft of the pasta attachment so that it can be securely attached to the mixer. Unfortunately, the hole was machined inproperly and does not line up with the attaching screw on my 6 quart mixer. That means the pasta machine attachment routinely falls off during use making it a pain to use. I have an old 4.5 quart mixer that fits the attachment well, but doesn't seem to provide enough power to keep up with the dough.

I already have a pasta machine - a hand-crank traditional type, to which I've added an attachable motor. This one works fine, but I got tired of moving the motor back and forth from roller to cutter etc.
The KitchenAid roller is AWESOME! It is quieter, wider and has 2 additional thickness settings (8 in total) so that I can get my pasta paper-thin. LOVE IT!! I still use my old traditional machine for cutting the pasta sheets into fettucine noodles. (no more switching motor back and forth!)

If one reads the instructions for this item, it says specifically not to use a knife to attempt to fix a "jam." By all means, do heed this warning! I had to buy this replacement exactly because I did this stupid thing, and the ever-efficient roller sucked the knife blade right in, ruining both the knife and my original roller.

This thing beats rolling by hand by about 200%. First, you can go way faster. (I set the KA motor on about 4 or 5.) Second, you have both hands free handle the dough. Homemade pasta can now be a weeknight affair. Get home, roll-up your sleeves, make the dough ball, and put it aside to rest. Go upstairs and change out of your work clothes. Come back down, start the sauce on the fire, grab the KA, attach the roller, and roll and cut your noodles. Before your marinara's even thickened, they'll be ready.

Just one complaint: my goodness those numbers (for the thickness) are hard to see! I end up setting them mostly by feel.

Received first roller on time, well built and heavy. Mounted it on the mixer, worked fine but made this loud squealing noise. Couldn't resolve the noise problem be oiling. Called Kitchenaid customer service, after a few questions and suggestions, they decided to send me a replacement unit and I didn't have to pay for shipping! Excellent customer service. Received my replacement in less than a week.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied, March 1, 2010

This roller works great, but it takes a little bit of getting used to. It is still easier than rolling out the dough by hand and much faster. However, I give this four stars instead of five because if you let the pasta touch the edges it will get black grease from the roller. However, with practice I found this not to be an issue. You also cannot submerge the roller to clean it, but that really does not make a difference for general clean up- just the overly greased rollers.

5.0 out of 5 stars GLAD WE GOT ONE, March 14, 2010

My wife and I both love to cook and have never tried making fresh pasta before. I didn't want to purchase the more expensive cutter attachments (bundled with the roller) until we were sure this was something we wanted to continue doing. I must tell you there is no comparison to eating fresh pasta verses the dry boxed kind. It is so velvety smooth! We definitely will be purchasing the ravioli maker and cutter heads for making fettuccini & spaghetti in the future. It rolls out beautifully even sheets for making lasagna or for hand-making ravioli. We've also rolled and hand cut the sheets into strangoli or stroganoff sized pasta with good results. We've had no problems with dough sticking or cleaning the roller after use. The pasta recipes included in the user guide worked well and are tasty. I especially enjoy the spinach pasta. If you are like we were and want to try rolling your own fresh pasta, but are worried it might not be for you, this is an affordable alternative for a high quality machine rolled pasta maker. WE LOVE OURS!!

Didn't expect perfection the first time I made homemade pasta!

The KA roller worked very well, and the KA egg pasta recipe that's included was delicious. I highly recommend this purchase!
