Well, the title for my review says it all. When I first saw the price, I thought that it was pretty high. I ordered it anyway and decided to give it a shot. This review is from: KitchenAid KTT460WH 2-Slice, Single-Slot Digital Toaster with Bagel, Warm, and Frozen Functions, White (Kitchen)
Background: I have only owned one toaster in my 53-year life. It is a 1950's Toastmaster (chrome with cloth cord - a classic). My mother used it for more than 20 years to keep four boys in toast. I have used it for another 20+. So, why a new toaster? For Bagels, muffins, and long slices of sour dough that did not fit in the toaster and had to be done in an oven.

Evaluation: I purchased the KitchenAid due to the special features - Bagel setting, Warm, and Frozen functions; and for the extra wide slot. The toaster worked fine on all settings. Toast, bagels, etc. came out fairly evenly toasted. The controls were easy to use.

The only drawback that I found initially was that I could only fit one long sour dough slice at a time. The long slot is fine for 2 half slices of muffins, bagels, and regular sandwich bread. But, did not fit two slices of sour dough from a slice round loaf.

However, after less than two months of use the pop up mechanism failed to lift the toast more than 2/3 up. I continually had to lift the lever to reach the toast. I returned the toaster and took out the old Toastmaster again. I generally trust KitchenAid's quality, but will look more closely at other brands for my next purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just right, October 18, 2002

Not only did it fit onto my counter perfectly, but the first two pieces of bread that I toasted came out . . . "just right." The easy-to-use controls reflect a nice amount of features without a clutter of buttons or interfaces that have you going back to the manual constantly. In other words, between the balance of more features versus ease-of-use, this product was just right. And finally, taking these two things into account, I re-evaluated what I thought of the price. The size is good, it toasts perfectly, and it has features that work, all for a price that is (yep you guessed it) just right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great toaster -- easy controls!, February 2, 2003

I have been using this toaster for 3 months now and I have been favorably impressed with its performance. I bought this to replace a 34 year old temperamental toaster that I had grown tired of hassling with -- I decided on this KitchenAid model since it matched my mixer and could accommodate a whole slice from a sourdough artisan loaf as well as regular size bagels. I especially liked the fact that the bagel setting toasts only one side, so you don't end up with charred crusts. The controls are clean and simple and all buttons, dials, and levers have worked as expected. Toast comes out evenly browned on both sides and the frozen button is great for using bread directly from the freezer. I have found that toasting English muffins or bagels does require a higher setting like 7 - 8 to get the job done, especially if you are beginning with the frozen setting. Overall, I have been very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this toaster.

1.0 out of 5 stars What an awful product!, December 31, 2002

This review is from: KitchenAid KTT460WH 2-Slice, Single-Slot Digital Toaster with Bagel, Warm, and Frozen Functions, White (Kitchen)
I should have known better since I saw the other negative reviews before I purchased this toaster. But after looking at various other toasters, it seemed as though all of them were more or less despised by the review writers. So, thinking the reviewers must be just natural born complainers, I went ahead and bought it anyway - twice. The first one toasted only on one side. The second one would not keep the toast down without holding the lever. Both failed to brown the toast on any setting below 10 (the highest setting). So I returned both of them and gave up.

KitchenAid seems to have no quality control whatever! (They could learn something from Amazon.com, which was pleasant and helpful throughout the ordeal.) I certainly won't be purchasing any more of their appliances. For those of you reading this and thinking I'm a complaining kook, think again. All these negative reviews are accurate. This toaster is a piece of junk. If you buy it, be prepared to be toastless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?, January 15, 2004
By A Customer
When our toaster gave out after I don't know how many years, I turned to Consumer Reports and customer comments on toasters, here and at other web sites. I could not, and still cannot understand the wildly disparate reports. Perhaps a few persons have problems and are quick to report them and the multitude who are happy, for the most part, do not bother. So, it was with great trepidation that I ordered this toaster. The outcome? Everyone in the house loves to use it.

We have tried every setting and they all work just fine. We buy bakery bread that is of varying sizes and shapes depending on the type of bread and where one is cutting in the loaf, esp. if it is a round loaf. So, we needed a long slot to accomodate the center cuts of a large round loaf.

It is true that the edge of the bread gets toasted a shade darker on the edge towards the middle of the toaster if it isn't filled completely by either one large or two smaller pieces of bread. As some persons have said, come on, this is just toast. One very minor characteristic like that, which is understandable to me, doesn't tempt me to reduce the score of 5 out of 5.

Now, I don't know what is going to happen tomorrow, but we have been using this toaster for several weeks to make sure that we really wring it out and now I'm taking the time to give positive feedback in the hope that it will reassure someone who thinks this might be a good bet for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more pleased with my toaster, October 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: KitchenAid KTT460WH 2-Slice, Single-Slot Digital Toaster with Bagel, Warm, and Frozen Functions, White (Kitchen)
I have only had my new toaster for 2 days. I use a toaster every day, sometimes several times a day. I am very happy with the consistency of toasting with my new Kitchenaid toaster. I like my toast at a 3 setting and my granddaughter likes a 2 setting. I can make mine first and then hers, and hers is just right, I could never do this with any other toaster. Also, there is no guesswork with the digital setting, a 3 is always exactly the same. The warm button is handy when I can't get to the toaster right away. Before, I had to push it down again and hope to catch it before it burned. I recommend this product to anyone who, like me, enjoys a perfect piece of toast.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, February 8, 2004

I own a KitchenAid Mixer, Food Processor & Blender. I figured the toaster would the perfect addition. So far I have been extremely disappointed. Even at the setting 9, the toast isn't done. It takes at least two cycles. I also have had problems with the edges being burnt. I know it's only toast, but geez for $90 you wouldn't think you would have to worry. Also disappointed in the size of the slots. I think this may go into the appliance graveyard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this toaster, August 26, 2003

This is the 1st upscale toaster I've owned and I love it. It really is wide enough to toast the fattest bagel or slice of Texas toast, plus the "warm" and "bagel" functions are very handy. The very easy to use crumb tray is unlike any I've ever come across. I'm glad I bought it. Oh yeah, it looks awesome.

2.0 out of 5 stars High on features, low on quality., January 28, 2004
By A Customer
Good: The digital display and defrosting features are nice. The cord wraps up nicely under the unit as well.

Bad: Plastic case feels cheap. Lifting mechanism feels cheap. Mine doesn't lift food all the way up when done. Manual lifting is required as the automatic mechanism only "pops" the lift up about 1 inch. Slots are not long enough to accomodate two pieces of wide sourdough.

1.0 out of 5 stars This TOASTER STINKS, November 5, 2002
By A Customer
This toaster is awful!!! I would rate it 0 stars if I could. It has major variations in the toasting. One side will be barely toasted, the other side will vary from light brown to burnt! I'm not exaggerating. According to KitchenAid, it's not supposed to work this way and there is nothing I'm doing wrong. KitchenAid has been nice enough to replace the toaster a number of times. All of the toasters so far, have worked the same way more or less.
