While the knives are great, I gave this item 2 stars for misrepresentation. The small pairing knife is not shaped like the knife in the photo. The middle knife has a serrated edge which is not what I wanted and was the purpose of this purchase. I wanted a slicing knife. It is also smaller than pictured and is not shaped anything like the one in the photo. It is more rectangular shaped. The blades measure as follows: pairing knife 3 1/4-inches, serrated knife 5 1/4-inches, and chef's knife almost 8-inches, However, due to the inexpensive price, I decided to keep them.

Some things which may help you decide on whether or not you wish to purchase knives made from carbon steel are the following:

PRO:
*They keep a sharper edge longer than my stainless steel knives.

CONS:
They need more care:

*To prevent rusting, you need to wash them by hand and wipe them thoroughly dry immediately. If you have time, oil them about every third use.

*Oiling after each use would be ideal. I just add a bit of cooking or mineral oil to a paper towel, wipe the oil onto the blade and use a clean portion of the paper towel to wipe them off.

*They can chip easily. I have some cardboard knife sleeves I have had for years from Raley's grocery store chain. They sharpen knives for free. I store them in the sleeves to prevent them chipping while stored in the drawer with other knifes.

*Knowing that the red is just a coating, I wash them faced down so that the water cannot get underneath the coating. If you soak them this will probably begin to peel soon.

The description here states a paring knife and utility knife and chefs knife which is exactly what I received but the PIC is incorrect and shows a small santoku and a slicer and chefs knife so the PIC and description DO NOT match. As far as the actual knives I received they are forged and finished with beautifully coated candy apple red handles that shine nicely. They are weighted fairly well and sharp so a only a quick steeling and hand washing and towel drying them all before use was necessary. "Hand Wash Only" is clearly printed on the package. I hung them on my wall magnet and they look great in my kitchen plus it keeps the handles and blades safe from being chipped. These will last quite awhile if cared for properly. 5 stars are for quality and value. The seller is at fault for the incorrect PIC not the product so appropriate feedback was left there. Update: Over 4 months of use now and they are holding up perfectly with only normal honing to keep them sharp. No rust and still just like new. Very pleased with them :)

My mother purchased this knife set for me to use in my new home. I do a lot of cooking with vegetables and I use fresh vegetables most of the time. So I used this set to cut my fresh vegetables. The knives were sharp and the handle is made into the knife which makes it safer. HOWEVER, after one ONE WEEK of use with these knives, they started showing rust spots. I washed one knife in the dishwasher and when I pulled it out it was covered in rust spots. The other knife that is too big for the dishwasher that I wash by hand only is also showing rust spots. I always wash my knives right after use so that the foods I'm cutting do not get stuck on the blade. In the case of the dishwasher knife, it was rinsed right away and the last item into the dishwasher. It doesn't seem to matter how I wash the knives. They still started rusting. My friend also bought a KitchenAid knife, and his knife started showing spots after only two weeks of use! These knives are NOT a good investment! DO NOT BUY.

The handles are a burgundy colored painted on application. Does not match my other KitchenAid items in red.

I am returning these knives.
