1.0 out of 5 stars If you like fanfiction..., June 16, 2008
This review is from: Kitten (Paperback)
The story starts with Ashley finding Shaun. If you haven't read the summary to the book, then you wouldn't know what was going on. We miss out on a bit of backstory with Shaun and Ashley always feels the need to share his own with a complete stranger. They know each other for a short period of time before they get physical.

If you like fanfiction where it is assumed that you know more about the characters than what is given, then feel free. The sex is pretty good, but for someone who likes more plot than porn, this probably isn't the book for you.

If I had the chance to look at this book in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it.

4.0 out of 5 stars shapeshifter story.., February 13, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kitten (Paperback)
"Kitten" is quite an astonishing story, and richly detailed for only being a novella. Shapeshifters have been genetically engineered and trained as pets for humans. Though sentient, they are true pets - wearing a collar and expected to sleep and eat on the floor when they aren't "pleasing" their masters. This isn't consensual BDSM--they have been bred to the leash, but did not choose it. Shuan thought he was human until he shifted before his 18th birthday. He was sold to The Institute to be trained, but escaped. Ashley is not like other masters. He wants to love and protect Shuan, but will society allow him?

The romance in the story is built slow. In fact, sex doesn't occur until nearly half-way through the novella, but the anticipation made it that much better. The two main character's are very well developed with a sufficient backstory. However, the story was disturbing and also quite sad. Though Ashley and Shuan end up together (as in all good romances) there is some torture in the story and the sad fact of a pet's existence is never far from a reader's mind. Most of humanity is portrayed quite rightly as cruel and it made some of the reading difficult. Unfortunately, treating people as less than human continues even today and "Kitten" is an unusual metaphor for such sorrow. Though the ending was happy, there is the lingering doubt that their happiness could still be ruined. (Which is no doubt where the second novella comes in.) Regardless, I highly recommend this thought-provoking story. (I have not finished the second novella, and will update this review once I have.)

I didn't like the whole pet/master concept. Not that I'm not kinky, but I don't care for pets.

This book strikes me as something that might appeal to Furries. I'm not making a joke; I'm just saying.
