Book Description

October 1, 2006
At the age of 19, Kitty McCarthy has decided she is going to live a life less ordinary—although she doesn't know quite how to go about it. What she does know is that she doesn't want to get married and raise children in Liverpool like her elder sisters—Claire, who is a mother-hen, easy-going Norah, and elegant Aileen. But Kitty's resolve is tested by the unexpected direction her life takes. What will she gain by swimming against the tide? The combination of an impetuous youthful decision and a chance meeting 20 years later are to have momentous repercussions that will stay with her forever. As she bounces through the years, wryly accepting that regrets and mistakes are all part of life, it is her sisters who are the constant thread when other relationships have come and gone. They know her best, they say, and in the end they know what is best for her—although Kitty would almost certainly disagree. Maureen Lee paints another unforgettable and intimate picture of one family's chaos, unpredictability, and warmth. Her heroine, Kitty, serves as a reminder that every life story is unique.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Kitty and Her Sisters (Paperback)
Kitty and her sisters is a heartwarming and soapy epic about Kitty McCarthy and her relationships with her family members. Kitty is the strong opinionated, rather independant sister, Norah is the shy quiet one, Claire is the kindly sister, and Aileen is the perfectionist. Kitty is not keen on marriage, and this surprises and confuses her more conventional friends and family.

I found this audio novel rather tough to get into at first. It opens while the sisters are children and at a party and it is difficult to tell the characters apart. Nothing really exciting happens to suck you in, but after a while you begin to enjoy hearing about Kitty and her interaction with her siblings. Kitty is a charmingly flawed person whose heart is in the right place despite her stubborn qualities.

The setting, like most of her novels, is Liverpool England. The author infuses the right blend of realism with charm and sensitivity to make this an endearing and addictive family drama.

This wasn't the best Maureen Lee book that I have read, but I still really enjoyed it.

A good and interesting read with a few twists and turns. Good insight into the characters and their thoughts and feelings, not just actions.

If you enjoy the style of books written set in Liverpool then I believe you'll love this book.

It was certainly a book that you couldn't guess how things were going to happen from chapter to chapter - the sign of a great author
