5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! August 18, 2008
Format:MP3 Music
Mick O'brien and Caoimhín ó Raghallaigh have made what is one of the finest Irish music records of not only recent but of all times.

The pipe-and-fiddle due play Irish music (jigs, reels and a couple of hornpipes) the way it was meant to be heard-- with no guitars or drums cluttering the mix, subtly, making the tunes entirely new. The title track is stunning; others, such as the superb Mullin's Fancy, reimagine these tunes and will lend a whole new set of ears to musicians and non-musicians alike.

The pair's genius here is to bring out the tunes'many inflections without adding junk to the tunes, or relying on speed or effects, to bring out the subtleties. I imagine that this record, like the Bothy Band recordings, will become cannonical. Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite recordings June 10, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Quite simply, this CD offers Irish traditional music as it ought to be played. The choice of tunes reflects a deep knowledge of the repertoire, and the performances are tasteful, expert, and inspiring. The music wears very well; this CD is still in heavy rotation in my house after at least two years. An easy desert-island choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timelessly satisfying! June 10, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I discovered these guys several years ago while listening to RTE radio via the web and instantly fell in love with their playing. They take the music at an easy pace and have a groove that just won't quit. I found this CD not long thereafter and it remains one of the most-listened-to recordings that I own. It wears extremely well and is a wonderful antidote to the school of Irish music that seems to feel that fast and furious is the way to go.

Here's what it says about this amazing music on my web page:

Here we have a treat from the adventuresome young fiddle player and "sonic explorer" Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and the veteran piper Mick O'Brien. There's something utterly unique and exhilarating about the sound of the fiddle and pipes together and on Kitty Lie Over, these two Dublin lads create emphatic, uplifting, sometimes breathtaking music. In so doing, they tip their caps to many a fine musician from the past, drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Séamus Ennis, County Clare fiddler Patrick Kelly, the great uilleann piper and tinwhistle player Willie Clancy and Donegal fiddler Neillidh Boyle. This is a sumptuous collection of traditional Irish music in all respects, a recording which is already coming to be regarded as a masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best July 13, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This recording of duets on flat-pitched pipes and low-tuned fiddle is as good as it gets. Mick and Caoimhin play tightly in sync, creating wonderfully sonorous sets of interesting tunes. Their musicianship is phenomenal, and Mick's pipes are flawlessly tuned. This will quickly become your favourite disc.
