This leather dye works perfect to handle and last way longer.

Daubed on the Kiwi leather dye, and it worked wonders--the purse is now a uniform, inky black.

No such luck, NOBODY had leather dye, not even the "better" shoe store in town.

This dye is made for shoe scuffs and minor leather touch-ups. It is not meant to be used as as a permanent leather dye for large items like leather belts, purses, jackets, etc. It does not penetrate deeply and can be removed with various cleaning solvents.

However, the advantage it has is that it can be cleaned from your hands or from surfaces with rubbing alcohol or hand cleaners like Goop.

In contrast, the Fiebing's and Tandy permanent dyes are much stronger dyes and will penetrate the leather better for a permanent finish. But with the Fiebing's and Tandy dyes you must wear gloves, be careful, and cover your work area all around with a few layers of newspaper because it will stain anything it gets on (including your skin) and is much harder to remove. Don't let kids near the permanent dyes.

After 50 years I've never been disappointed or let down by any Kiwi product until now. I wanted to dye a pair of light brown western boots black. Kiwi black dye from WalMart was the only black dye being sold in my small town, so I bought it. They also had a black liquid for covering up scuffs, but I wanted dye and this stuff said dye on the label, so I bought it. BIG MISTAKE.

I should have known things weren't right when I saw the way it was supposed to be applied. Instead of a simple wire with fuzz-ball on the underside of the cap, like in the old days, this bottle had a new "improved" applicator built into the top of the cap. After shaking well, per the instructions, and prying the transparent plastic cover off (with great difficulty) you have to press on the foam applicator built into the top to puncture a hidden membrane so the dye can flow into the foam applicator, an unnecessary complication over the old fuzzball on the end of a wire.

So how well did it work, and how good was the "dye"? (I put "dye" in quotes because it was more of a tint than real dye.) The awkwardness of the dime-sized foam attached to the unremovable cap and bottle made it impossible to apply the dye to the front of the deep-set western heels or the sewed areas of the welt where the sole joins the upper part. This no-doubt patented screwball applicator system is just terrible and impractical.

And the "dye"? ... it was a thin foam and all it did was make black smears on the surface of the tan-brown leather. Didn't seem to soak in and actually dye the leather. Anyone old enough to have used real dye, applied by a simple unscrewing cap with built-in wire/fuzzball applicator on the underside, will know what I'm talking about.

My husband was repainting his motorcycle, and he painted it black. The seat was a brownish color and he wanted it black as well. We ordered this product and it worked perfectly. It arrived very quickly and was exactly what we needed.

I had purchased a nice black leather belt (name brand and everything!), which began flaking the color off the blet within a couple of wearings. If I had my receipt, it would have been returned to the store! Instead, I fumed and looked around town for leather dye to salvage this thing. No such luck, NOBODY had leather dye, not even the "better" shoe store in town. Amazon to the rescue! I used the dye according to package directions, problem SOLVED! It worked beautifully, as easy to apply as shoe polish. My belt is once again back in my wardrobe rotation and looking great. Thanks, Kiwi!

I used this on my husbands old dr. Martins. It really cleaned them up nicely and made them look like new, at least color wise. I just did it so I can't vouch for the longevity of it yet.

I used this to dye some calf hide I was using to make a wallet and I ended up throwing out the pieces and had to start over. The dye does not penetrate the leather like dye should. It leaves a streaky mess that looks horrible. This product might be fine for fixing a scuff on a cheap pair of shoes but that's about it.

I used this dye to fix up a vintage handbag that had gone grey with wear over significant portions of the leather. I put on 2-3 coats, depending on the area, and after drying and using a leather conditioner, you would never be able to tell how awful the bag looked before. Very happy.

Used this on a black leather Coach purse that has been used constantly for 10+ years; it was pretty much an unattractive grey, especially on the strap, handle, and edges. Was leery of using an inexpensive product on an expensive item, but figured I had nothing to lose since the purse was looking pretty sad. Daubed on the Kiwi leather dye, and it worked wonders--the purse is now a uniform, inky black. Easy to apply, no streaking, and easy clean-up. Wouldn't expect this product to change the color of leather, but for renewing or restoring the original color it's great.
