Book Description

May 1, 2007
The Dreamtime is Australia's time before time. Animals and birds and plants came into being and took their current forms, and Australia became what it is today--a place of wonder and diversity, populated by unique creatures found nowhere else. Now, however, Australia and its creatures are under threat--from habitat destruction, global warming, and the incursions of predators not native to Australia. This book of Aboriginal stories, retold by award-winning author Lee Barwood, brings the time of Dreaming to life. From the Great Flood to the story of how the koala lost its tail, these are some glimpses into ancient Aboriginal folklore. Each copy of the book contributes to the Australian Wildlife Hospital, a major project Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Worldwide Ltd, for the preservation of the koala and other Australian creatures under threat. GAIL GIPP, HOSPITAL MANAGER, WILDLIFE WARRIORS WORLDWIDE: As a young child growing up in Stawell, Australia I was captivated by the koalas that lived in bush land nearby. That early love affair proved to be a formative one and has shaped the course of my life ever since. Klassic Koalas, through its imaginative storytelling, demonstrates the significance of the koala in the lives of many through generations. May readers of this book be similarly enthralled, so that koalas may always find their carers and protectors.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Cute and cuddly is how koalas are usually described, but in this collection of eight Aboriginal tale retellings, these endearing marsupials possess a more complex character. Set in the Outback during the Dreamtime -- the time of creation when neither men nor animals had taken their final forms --these pourquoi tales explain why the koala and many of his fellow inhabitants of Australia exhibit certain physical and behavioral characteristics today.... In the tradition of storytelling, the author employs an engaging yet respectful tone to recreate these ancient tales. A glossary provides useful descriptions of less familiar animals and terms. Whether used in an educational setting to teach the diverse animal life and folklore of the often overlooked Australia or simply for the stories themselves, this title will appeal to older elementary and middle school students, eager to learn about the kind, mischievous, and secretive sides of Koala. --Angela Leeper, ForeWord Magazie

With its wide variety of imaginative pictures that allow for children to get a better understanding of Australian wildlife "Klassic Koalas: A Coloring Book of more than 80 Koalas and Uniquely Australian Creatures" is a wonderful display of the peaceful nature of the koala while showcaseing other animals from Down Under. By providing children with a better understanding of what life is like for the Koala in the Australian wilderness children can learn what they do can impact this world. Possibly the most beneficial part of the book for children is the glossary at the end. If they are truly interested in the animals and scenes that they see in the coloring book, the glossary can provide them with information their growing minds need. This coloring book allows for children to have fun and learn at the same time, which is something that both children and parents are looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like A Walk Through Dream-Time..., August 2, 2007

This review is from: Klassic Koalas: Ancient Aboriginal Tales in New Retellings (Perfect Paperback)
An astoundingly good read. Visually entertaining. Something perfect for expanding the minds of ones' young whilst at the same time being rather entertaining. The Australian aboriginal tales speak of a time long since past, but strangely of the present. This is a book well worth the purchase, so good that I picked one up for my friends children. Cheers!
