There is no need to remove the belt or harness, you just loop the holder over the belt or harness (up to 3-Inch wide) and snap it closed. This is a well-made product, and a great solution to a common problem (shredded pants pockets), but it didn't quite work for me. Notice the specs say 4-inch belt max. My belt is 1 1/2 inches, so every time I tried to take the tape measure off, the loop would just slide up on my belt. It was annoying enough for me to quit using it after one day. Also, the leather piece is 2 3/4 inches wide, which is quite a bit wider than I would prefer. The metal piece does hold the tape measure securely, though, and I'm sure this product would work quite well with a 4-inch belt. If you have a narrower belt, you might have to modify the loop to fit (put a couple stitches in so it's not one big loop) and/or add something to stiffen it up a bit. I ended up taking the clip off and making my own backing.
