Hypnotic,
By
This review is from: Klezmer Acoustic Music Trio (Audio CD)
In 1995 I saw Kroke perform in a very small Krakow cafe. I had just returned from a pilgrimage to the site of Auschwitz and was in a state of shock. Maybe that explains the eerie and hypnotic affect this synthesized klezmer had on me, but I swear, midway through dinner when Kroke began to play the room went absolutely silent. People stopped eating, people stopped talking, and for over an hour Tomasz Kukurba created a spell with his rarified violin artistry. Jerzy Bawol on accordian and Tomasz Lato on bass added depth and texture. Not exactly klezmer, not exactly world music, but I have hung onto the little cassette I bought that night, their first recording in 1993, simply entitled Kroke. I thought I would never again meet up with this band. Alas, their first recording is out of print, but many of the same songs appear on Trio. Now you can experience Kroke outside of Poland.

Fantastic, only reason i didn't give it 5 stars is that their albums with more extended versions of the music are even better. A knockout Klezmer recording.

This is one of the finest acoustical Klezmer albums available! Even if you don't like Klezmer, you WILL be drawn in to this group's alluring charm. Most the tunes have roots in the Eastern block and are very traditional. Kroke plays with so much emotion and so much vivacity that the CD is addictive!
