5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe should be classifed as a CD that comes with a book..., October 27, 2005
This review is from: Klezmer Music: A Marriage of Heaven & Earth (Musical Expeditions Series) (Audio CD)
This item is a bit hard to classify here on Amazon -- is it a book with a bonus CD, or a CD with hardcover liner notes? I would vote for the latter. This little 63-page book is square and only slight larger than a CD box, with a sleeve for the CD in the back. Clearly, it was designed to sit on the music shelf. It has a nice history of klezmer, with notes on each of the bands and the pieces they play on the CD, along with notes by the producer. But it's more than that. There are wonderful archival photos I've not seen anywhere else, essays by Michael Alpert and Frank London, and an interview with Andy Statman. Plus a very useful glossary of Yiddish and Hebrew terms. The performers are: Alicia Svigals, The Chicago Klezmer Ensemble, Di Naye Kapelye, La'om, Andy Statman, Budowitz, Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer, Ray Musiker and the Kelzmatics, The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, Naftule's Dream, and Brave Old World. A fine addition to your klezmer collection -- and a good read, too. I would especially recommend it to librarians, because the sturdy little book has a good quality binding and will last well in circulation.
