Though the standard battery can be charged onboard the camera, I bought this to charge one battery while using the other, and when on the road so the car adapter was essential. I have only tried it so far in the home and am not sure it is working. The charger has no visual clue as to charge status. I left a discharged battery in for maybe 5 or 6 hours, but it still needed a considerable time being charged while onboard the camera (which typically takes 3 or less hrs) to be of any use. The lack of confidence makes it next to useless, but it was so cheap as to not be worth the effort of returning it.
