As an artist and Viennese myself I must say that Frank Whitford has done a masterful job of leading the reader through the Zeitgeist that drove the turn of the century Vienna art scene in which Gustav Klimt worked, laboured and flourished. I highly recommend this book to mature artists and fledgelings who are interested in the real development of modern art beyond the borders of France, England. Whitford shows time and time again how Klimt struggled to incorporate the Zeitgeist of a crumbling Empire into his art while lead it into the evolving 20th century.
